Default Need help..acne scars won't fade

I recently upped my Zoloft, and I think that has something to do with my skin problems.
I wash, exfoliate, use a moistureizer with salyclic acid and take vitamnis, nothing is working!

I will talk to my dr about lowering my dosage, but what can I do about the marks the acne has left?
    I've used Differin,and it hasn't helped.
My skin is a mess of tiny,reddish,bruise-like marks that make my face look dirty.
Makeup does not help, greenish color-correcter does not help.
I was thinking of trying Strivectin because I heard that it really fades stretch-marks,but other threads have reported that it causes breakouts.
Ladies,I am at the end of my rope! I want clear skin so bad!

Does anyone have a recommendation or a product that worked for them and works fast?
    I can't afford a spa right now.

I was in the same boat recently, minus the Zoloft. I'm not sure how that may hinder your skin but I would definitely talk to your doctor.

My skin has/had the same bruise like scars. I couldn't find anything to cover them up besides heavy liquid foundations. I started myself on an MSM supplement recently. It is suppose to help greatly with the skin, stimulating collagen and helping to raise scars. It has helped with my under eye circles too. I would try that as a cheaper alternative to the spa.

When I got really frustrated by the fact that I had been wasting my time with different products is when I finally turned to laser treatments. Think about how much each makeup/coverup/vitamin/topical product costs. If I had to add up all the things I tried it would be well over the cost of one laser treatment. So far I've had 3 laser treatments, and I've seen great results in my skin and my scars. Just something to consider!!

I hope you find something that works. I am finally starting to feel relief and see results in my skin. Good luck!

I used a combo of neosporin and mederma for mine. Neosporin goes on in the morning (when I'm not wearing makeup), and mederma goes on before bed (so I don't smell like onion all day!). This was the only thing that helped fade my dark marks, I hope it helps!

I use liquid foundation to cover the marks.Liquid works besy in my opinion. To fade the marks I use Ambi fading cream. Im not sure if that's the correct name but its the one in the tube for oily skin.Cheap, cheap, cheap, and it works.I know that alot of people are scared to use hydroquinone which is the active ingredient in most fading creams, because it's said to cause cancer. However, the ambi cream only has 2% hydroquinone which is the fda safe level for over the counter products.Plus I only dab a tiny dot on each scar.Sometimes it can get time consuming but I get better results this way, and it's safer than using it over a large area of skin.Hope this helps.

This sounds like a commercial. I'm skeptical. And what is MSM?

Hmm... I sound like a commercial? Cool, I think. Anyway - Google MSM. I searched 'MSM Supplement.' Do some research, http://www.all-natural.com/msm.html That's how I have come across everything that has worked for me so far. I have done reading on various supplements/methods, visited boards like acne.org and done plenty of research. I have tried plenty of things that do work and a ton of things that haven't. I guess I'm just rehearsed because I spend so much time on this subject. If you look at my previous posts, a great deal are on topics like skin, diet and exercise. /Threadjack.

So back to the OP, if you read up on MSM it sounds like something you might consider. The laser treatments are only something that should be started if you know you can commit to more than one. I've done 3 and I'm just starting to see results!

So call now! If you order I'll throw in a 14-piece grooming kit for only the cost of shipping and handling! Hehe

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylsulfonylmethane

    Methylsulfonylmethane
(MSM, or dimethylsulfone) is an organosulfur compound with the formula (CH3)2SO2. This colourless solid features the sulfone functional group and is considered relatively inert chemically. It occurs naturally in some primitive plants and is present in small amounts in many foods and beverages and it is marketed as a dietary supplement, although its benefits are disputed.

MSM is promoted as a natural source of sulfur by the supplement and health food industry, suggesting that people are deficient in sulfur intake. However, protein in the diet is an abundant source of sulfur, which is contained in the amino acids methionine and cysteine. MSM is sold as a dietary supplement that is marketed with a variety of claims and is commonly used (often in combination with glucosamine and/or chondroitin) for helping to treat or prevent osteoarthritis. U.S. Retail sales of MSM as a single ingredient in dietary supplements amounted to $115 million in 2003. The biochemical effects of supplemental methylsulfonylmethane are poorly understood. Some researchers have suggested that MSM has anti-inflammatory effects (Morton et al. 1986; Childs, 1994; Murav'ev et al., 1991). Any health effects of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) may be mediated, at least in part, by MSM (Williams et al, 1966; Kocsis et al, 1975). Stanley W. Jacob, M.D., of the Oregon Health and Science University, claims to have used MSM to treat over 18,000 patients with a variety of ailments (Jacob & Appleton, 2003).

MSM is the primary metabolite of DMSO in humans, and is also a metabolite of sulfur-containing amino acids.

I feel your pain! It is bad enough to have the acne, but even when it clears up it appears to still be there for months after. As for covering it up, I use Boing by Benefit, that seems to stay put fairly well.

I am taking Bupropion (generic Wellbutrin) and since then my face has seemed worse as well. Although Zoloft is a SSRI and Wellbutrin an SNRI, I'd be really interested to know if there is any correllation between the two+skin problems.

I am strongly considering the laser treatment, as soon as I decide which one will be best for my skin...there are so many to choose from!

My acne was actually misdiagnosed for years, I later found out it's a skin condition called Dh (dermatitis herpetiformis) which comes from injesting gluten when you have celiac disease. If I avoid gluten my skin becomes clear and beautiful and I stop being ill all the time. Even the slightest trace of gluten though, and I get the cysts on my face and scalp again and nothing makes them go away for weeks. It's awful. I have one on my face now and I think I got glutened again from some guacamole flavoring stuff today.

Anyway thats probably not the case for you but I thought I'd bring it up because I used to be on zoloft too and there might be some weird connection between that and gluten sensitivity, you never know!

For acne scars I use a product called Beginnings. It's expensive, but worth it. I don't know if I'm allowed to post links but google "beginnings skin care" or something like that and it will come up, I think the web site is beautiful faces online or something.

Try to go and see a dermatologist, maybe just once, so she can tell you for sure what kind of scars you have

Oh how I KNOW how this feels ... I found that excessive exfoliating and salicylic acids only made it worse for me. I have to stay clear of ALL acne specific products and get back to the basics - natural products with either a high aloe vera base or rosehip oil are excellent for healing! If you have oily skin the aloe might be the best option, otherwise try the rosehip:
http://www.primalnature.com/rosehipsoil.html not this brand specifically but there is some great info at the bottom.

    And on aloe: http://ezinearticles.com/?Can-Aloe-V...cars&id=436609

I haven't had much luck with any vitamins ... getting lots of good oils in your diet helps and I notice when I don't get enough sleep my skin is redder. Oh, and I know its hard, by try to go a day or two a week without make up. Your skin will love you for it!

Thank you everyone for the advice.I think I will go get some MSM,I've used it before to help my hair grow,so it can't hurt.
I'm also going to try the ambi fade cream.

I have been exfoliating pretty heavily lately.I read on one of the threads that the reason your skin breaks out after heavy cleansing/exfoliating is because all the blckages are pushed to the surface. I will go back to natural soaps this week and see what happens.

Thanks again ladies! Any more advice is also welcome:-)

    Hello ladies,

I am new to the SW Community and just joined about two weeks ago. This is my first post. The topic really piqued my interest. I am obsessed with beauty products and skin care.

I currently use fruit enzyme peels performed by my facialist to control my skin breakouts. These are very extensive treatments. They cost $115 each and I visit her once a month.

Ms. Claire Voyant, I was very interested in the Beginnings Skincare Treatment that you are using. I went on to their website and liked what I read. I had some specific questions that I was hoping you would not mind answering:

How long have you been using the product?
How often do you use it?
How long did it take for you to see results?
What skin condition(s) were you trying to address?
What skin condition(s) did this product treat/resolve?

I hope you don't mind all these questions, but I just wanted to know the 411. I'm very interested in purchasing this product.

Hey no problem about the questions.

I've been using the product awhile.. not sure how long.. I'd say maybe 6 months.

It's basically a special facial "scrub" that you use twice a week, much like you would use any exfoliant. It takes some practice learning to use it right, it's hard to explain but you have to sorta get the right mix of wet skin and the right amount of product for it to work it's best. It sorta fails if it's too wet or too dry. It takes practice but once I figured out the best way to do it and now it works well every time.

I had/have a skin condition called DH which is similar to severe cystic acne, and it is a reaction to gluten in my system because I have celiac disease. No gluten, and the condition (VERY slowly) heals but it takes a lot of time and the cysts and lesions leave dark purple scars in my face.

This product helps very much in healing and fading all sorts of scars, from the DH scars in my face to normal zits that I get here and there, and it also has helped fade the fine lines under my eyes somewhat. I also use grapeseed oil on my skin and I think that helped too.

Thanks for responding so quickly! I really appreciate it.

I have acne that occurs during my menstrual cycle. It's mostly whiteheads, but since I am African American I am left with little brown spots after each breakout.

The enzyme peels help to fade the brown spots (hyperpigmentation) very quickly. They are just kind of expensive though, and I need to get it done every single month.

The Beginnings Treatment sounds like it could be a great alternative.

I'll order it and keep you ladies posted on my results!

try aspirin - crush it - mix with h20 - apply as a mask - scrub with it, wash if off - worked wonders for me - though my skin heals fairly well and quick. but aspirin is salicylic acid so it's like a peel.

Stay out of the sun and start using sunblock every single day. Spots from acne tan darker and stay darker the more UV light they are exposed to.

Yeah I think it would help a lot with that! I'm not going to lie and say the results are instant as far as fading the spots, it does take time, but it helps a LOT. It also makes your skin feel so smooth and soft it's crazy, like baby skin!

Miss EricaErotica; I have three websites for you to check out:
    http://www.makeupalley.com/
This is *THE* resource to find out what really works, IMHO. Go to the skincare board and ask all the questions you can think of. You will get excellent advice and personal experience help. The ladies there have tried EVERYTHING at least once! It is my go-to guide. The prouct review section is also very helpful.

    and for fruit enzyme peels:
    http://www.makeupartistschoice.com/c...eels-10-1.html
You can purchase the same ones you are probably getting at the salon for much reduced price; and they come with instructions. Refer back to makeupalley for help with these and experiences of others. You can save yourself a WHOLE lot of money!!

    and just for fun:
    http://www.smartskincare.com/
You can purchase the doctor's PDFs of how to make your own, proven effective (he tells you all the research and explains it in detail on the site and in the PDFs) skin serums. I make my own stable vitamin c serum for about $5 a batch.

    Enjoy!

    Hi Lil Dreamer,

You are sooo awesome! Thanks for turning me on to these websites. I am going to do a little research and see what's out there. I spend so much on my skincare treatments. I feel like I need to find some other options. I think the websites you mentioned will be a great start in the right direction!

I've tried everything for acne. The two things that really worked for me were Accutane and Spironolactone, but not at the same time. I prefer Spironolactone because it doesnt have any bad side effects like Accutane (peeling lips, hair shedding, sun sensitivity).
Right now I'm taking Spironolactone 200mg per day and washing with Phisohex soap twice a day. My skin is completely clear but I still have some scars. I had them filled in with Juvederm about a week ago and it looks fabulous. I had to buy a syringe of Juvederm for $500 but it was enough to fill in my scars, my smile lines and put a little in my top lip...unfortunately the juvederm is only temporary. I'm thinking about trying a laser for something more permanent.
