    Default Election Divergence?

I've seen several threads now regarding the presidential election, and how people are understandibly emotional.

However, in the midst of the excitement, did anyone catch the seemingly conflicting views of the voters?

Did anyone else find it interesting that both Florida and California which went blue and voted for Obama, arguably the most liberally leaning candidate we've had in recent memory, also voted in a seemingly conservative way against gay marriage?

Now I found it an interesting politcal tactic in the last election that the GOP worked to put the gay marriage issue on the ballot of certain battle ground states in order to mobilize their base and bring out those who would support Bush. But those were conservatives voting conservatively.

This time around the apparent divergence is curious to me. Does anyone else feel this way?

I thought that was strange too. But Americans are slow. We take our tolerance one step at a time so we'll vote for a black president but we still have to work on warming up to gays. It's kinda crazy but there is progress happening all over the country in regards to gay rights so I'm confidant that equality for all will happen sooner rather than later.

Unfortunately it's dangerous when a constitutional amendment gets voted on, which basically ties the hands of the judicial and legislative branches. It significantly prolongs a serious chance at change.

Gay marriage is as controversial as is the abortion issue. And will continue to be. The concept would go down a lot easier if we simply enacted an equivalent legal status but didn't call it marriage. Remember the USA is one of the most religious countries in the world, outside typically of the Muslim world. And there are still a lot of people who don't internally accept even the concept of homosxuality. So personal attitudes may not allow acceptance that the rest of the people don't want it, and that is why it is controversial. So we might as well accept that it will take maybe a generation or so for much wider understanding will occur; just like the racial issue--the ones that hate the change will just have to die off.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

Okay, I agree with much of what you're saying. I just think that we as a society have already done plenty to degrade to so called "sanctity" of marriage. When we have a 50% divorce rate and promote shows like "Who Wants to Marry a Milliare, Midget, US Citizen, My Dad, etc..." It doesn't seem that we hold the institution of "marriage" with much regard anyway. Yet somehow, allowing gays to marry would be the downfall.

IMO "marriage" is a word. Since "marriage" already has a legal standing let's let the word "marriage" remain for the public secular definition of the legal rights accompanied with the arrangement. Then allow those legal rights for anyone regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.

If the various religions really want a term to sanctify their unions, why not just come up with another word to describe their sacrimental union? IDK, just my own opinion.

When people get married they don't think they will ruin it, nor do they intend to. They just don't accommodate each other in ways that eventually become unforgiveable. Society doesn't promote the degradation of marriage; in the shows you mentioned, it's the marketers who do. Marriage is really a lot more than a single word with legal standing. But as you say, it isn't that reliable of a concept. I don't think people want to allow additional ways of 'devaluing' such a strong social tradition. (Can't think of another word that reflects what I see.)

    Is CA crazy?...

The state elects the liberal candidate Obama ... THEN

They pass Proposition 8, eliminating Gay Marriage ... MEANWHILE

    They approve Proposition 2!

The proposed 2 act prohibits the confinement of farm animals in a manner that does not allow them to turn around freely, lie down, stand up, and fully extend their limbs. Additionally, the measure:
    • Imposes a misdemeanor penalty and a fine of up $1,000 or imprisonment in county jail for up to six months to those who have been found to violate the act.
    • Bans dense confinement for egg-laying poultry, gestation crates for sows and veal crates for veal calves.

so ... gay's shouldn't be considered equal enough to be allowed to marry, BUT don't you dare treat poultry chickens poorly!
