    The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee today voted to reduce the official Bank Rate paid on commercial bank reserves by 1.5 percentage points to 3%.

    When oil hit $105 I thought that was it. I called for oil to pull back to $70. Fundamentally there was no reason for oil to be over $100, peak oil or not. The world economy was rapidly slowing and along with it real demand.

    Actually, the most serious piece of news in regard to its effect on Americans is the cutting of gov't benchmark interest rates around the globe. Even with Japan loaning money at 0.3% interest, all of the 'stable' currencies now have rates so low that it doesn't make sense for global investors to continue using 'carry trade' loans for foreign investment (i.e. borrowing Yen to invest in US dollar denominated DOW stocks). The risk of currency losses now exceeds the interest rate differential ... and especially so for the US dollar.
