    Default Will the IRS believe

that the small amount of money I made dancing this year really was that small?

I worked in a blue-collar 'Cheers' type strip club. I made an average of about $200 per shift before tip-out--$300 when I worked a 13-hour double. Say I only worked one night a week, because I had 2 other jobs that I was working around. That only comes out to about $5,000 for my stripping income so far this year (I only danced about 6 months).

While the government is pretty fixed on the notion that all dancers make $50-100,000 a year, if I admit to being a dancer at all, will they audit me? I really have nothing to hide, but will they try to prove I made more, and make me pay more than I owe for my taxes?

As far as I know, it doesn't matter what they believe. If you were audited, you could always point to any bank deposits you made. Unless you have a lot of high dollar items that you paid for this year (like cars and TVs and such) they have no basis to prove you earned more than you did.

Well, I kept everything I made in cash (I don't really trust banks) except for my hourly jobs' paychecks. And I bought a car for $1000 in cash.

But I guess if I added up my rent payments, my insurance payments, plane tickets, etc, they couldn't prove I was spending more than I will be claiming.

Exactly. You're fine. Unless there are red flags, you have nothing to worry about. They'd have to prove that you lied about your income which they can't do in your case.

What is to say that you were not helped out by family...I know you have to claim gifts over a certain amount...but I would not worry...I know I spend more than I make sometimes but that is why they have credit cards..

Gifts are claimed by, and gift taxes are paid by, the giver of the gift, not the recipient of the gift.

While I do not recommend lying on your taxes ( I truly beleive that it's not worth the stress) .... in this instance, you really sound fine.

You really don't have anything to worry about this year. You might, however, want to consider the fact that when an audit is performed the IRS backtracks 7 years.

To Ms Naked: Why bring a friend or family member into your trouble? If you give them their name, how do you know that the IRS won't try to audit them. And if you don't give them a name, then it will be assumed that you are lying and you will be held responsible anyway.
