While I'm not against 'special circumstances', I feel that Guantanamo Bay, in its current incarnation, needs to be shut the fuck down.

better yet the US will 'farm out' such work to reliable allies who are far less subject to international scrutiny ( maybe the Georgians / Poles / Czechs ? )

Oh I have a feeling if "they" shut down Gitmo, legislation will keep us from farming it out...

Shut it down. Sort out the detainees. Prosecute the "criminals" in civilian courts. Hold the rest as POW's.

Agreed, except for the last sentence. No-one should be held without charge or conviction.

Really? So if you get captured in a war you should either be freed, or charged with something?

    That'll work out well.

    Please. Re-read the Geneva Convention.

Technically a lot of the detainees do NOT fall under its protections. I advocate giving it to them anyway for OUR sakes and for OUR reputation. So afaic they are either "criminal" defendants entitled to due process and a trial or they are POW's which we are entitled to hold until the end of hostilities i.e. until the Taliban and Al Queda either surrender or sign a truce agreement. Could be a year from now; ten years; twenty or not in any of their lifetimes. However as POW's they'd have certain basic rights.

Or, we can just shoot them and be done with it.

Move 'em to Area 51. Maybe the spacemen will pick 'em up for experimentation.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

Well, if we're talking the Iraqi war, I think freeing the POWs should be a given. If we're talking a major world war, that's something of a different situation.

When its a war between nations, there is a definite end and a truce, so fighting stops and healing begins (usually). When it's a war against an informal, ad hoc enemy, like this one is, they may well be no end unless the enemy is largely exterminated. So releasing the terrorists among them is just foolhardy.

Oh, I'm not talking about releasing terrorists. They should be formally tried according to law and punished accordingly if found guilty.

What is the precedent for punishing prisoners of war under the Geneva Convention? I think the weeding out process was never carried out seriously; this should surely be done immediately.

After World War II, some Japanese and Germans who had surrendered were tried and punished for war crimes. German POW's who killed other POW's for cooperating with the Allies received a summary court martial and were hanged.

From my recollection death also was for 'spying', destruction of property, or trying to escape, not for just fighting in the war. Now the Japanese were particularly cruel, as were Stalin's people.
