    Default marriage + taxes + dependent?

    if you are married, but your spouse doesn't work, can you include them as an dependent? what is spouse exemption?

    no you can not claim an unworking spouse as a dependent.

    what?! my husband claims ME as a dependant on taxes. we file married-joint, but they still put me down as a dependant, since he is supporting me.

    Yes you in effect do

    Your filing status would be if you choose to use it, "married filing jointly" you get whatever the standard deduction for that is unless you were to choose to "itemize" for what ever reason.

    When it comes to "exemptions" you get one for the husband and one for the wife, the amount of the exemption is the same as it would be for any dependent children. The end result is that the wife or husband as the case may be is getting treat as a dependent.

    ^^Absolutely correct.

    Not only that, but you can claim head of household if you have children for an additional deduction.
