    Default I'm switching to veganism!

I just read the book Skinny Bitch and I never want to eat any meat or food derived from an animal again. So--hurray for veganism! Today was my 2nd day. I'm just learning to plan my meals in advance & read labels. I'm gonna go to this health food store a vegetarian friend of mine recommended this weekend to check out some alternatives to all the shit I've been eating.

I'm excited because even though I know it'll be a challenge (I'm still not sure how I'm going to live without cheese & chocolate), I know I'm going to feel so much better. On the diet I've been on (half-heartedly counting calories, pretty much eating whatever I want), I am tired a lot, I never poop, and I can't seem to lose the 10 lbs I put on last year.

I just wanted to share my excitement and ask if anyone has suggestions for yummy vegan snacks or recipes.

Also, I'm single and not interested in dating right now, but eventually obviously I'm going to want to get back in the game. My question is: do any of you vegans/vegetarians have a hard time dating or going out as a result of your diet? I'm gonna try to make this not too big of a deal, so that my omnivorous friends don't have to worry about where we go out to eat.

And I'm worried about having a relationship, like what do you do if your partner eats meat and expects you to cook it for him, yet you think it's morally wrong? A vegan friend of mine says it's best to just date other vegans, but honestly I have a long-time friend who I'm probably going to end up with eventually (long story) and I don't think eating habits should stand in the way of love.

I'm vegetarian, not vegan. I don't think it has to be a big deal in a relationship unless you make it one. Just don't preach to your SO, and learn to just roll your eyes and move on when every date pointedly orders "a big juicy steak."

Finding suitable restaurants to suit both your eating habits may be a bit difficult, but I would imagine there are at least a few options in CA.

I'm sorry I can't be of any more help, but I'm a vegetarian too and I could never date someone that wasn't. The choice that people make about what they consume has everything to do with what kind of person they are, and I would never want to be with the kind of person that supports torture and suffering and not standing up for what they believe in. I know it's hard to find them though, there are half as many male vegetarians as female, but you can always convert.

I'm vegetarian, not vegan. Tried the whole vegan thing, but I just couldn't do it.
I've been able to maintain a low weight because I'm not eating meat, although I don't eat much to begin with..but I've noticed it's easier to stay trim without meat.
Yay for you! Welcome to the veggie world! You'll love it!
my mother is vegan, and has been for 15+ years, and she does just fine,it is a challenge when she goes out to eat,but for the most part-she doesn't have a hard time with it. Good luck gorgeous!

What is Skinny Bitch? I mean I did google it but I'm not positive I am coming up with the same book or not. Not intrested in being vegan or veggitarian at all. Nutritionist said I can't afford to do it, I'd eventually get a virus or desease and my immune system wouldn't be able to fight it off. Have a shitty immune system as is. I am just curious about this book. ^-^ Good luck to you!

I'm vegetarian(not vegan) AND gluten free, so my diet is pretty limited! I don't really eat out at all, when I do it's usually a sushi house where I get edamame (so damn good) and plain veggie roles, such as avacado cucumber rolls with a side of fresh ginger. Also half my monthly money goes to Jamba Juice, I swear, and they have vegan options there plus they are mostly gluten free. Gluten is in everything, even more than animal products are in everything so being gluten free really limits most stuff for me.

It has been an issue in relationships. I would prefer to date a vegetarian or someone who is pretty respectful of the lifestyle. I had a terrible asshole ex (he was abusive and this was the least of our problems actually) who was totally mean to me about me being a vegetarian. I don't know why. I never complained about him eating meat or tried to make him go veggie, etc. He constantly tore me down for it, made fun of me and was completely non supportive. He'd always order a big steak whenever we went out and be like "OOOH I love cow, I love them fresh, id just cut into them alive and hear them scream MMM" and other offensive, stupid shit like that. Also whenever I got sick he blamed it on lack of meat, even though I ate healthy and he lived off cigarettes and orange soda.

Anyways sorry for bringing all that up because he was an asshole beyond belief, even remembering our relationship is humiliating for me because I can't believe I ever went out with him. So uhh.. ignore all that. lol

I honestly don't care much about being a vegetarian(been that way a long time, its natural for me now), I more need support for my gluten free diet and me having celiac disease. I once had a guy tell me he wouldn't be interested in dating me because he "couldn't bring me anywhere" and it's lame for me to "not be able to eat anything". That was like a punch in the gut. The lifetime I spent sick and undiagnosed and the pain I go through every time I get accidentally glutened and the trouble I deal with making sure my diet stays gluten free, hell don't worry about that but SORRY to inconvenience YOU.

Assholes. Grrr. I'm so glad I'm single.

but you CAN have chocolate! just dark chocolate, with no milk in it. (technically, if it HAS milk in it, then it's milk chocolate. just read the label.)
yay for you! i've been vegan now for 2 years and my boyfriend is vegan too.
i would suggest, for your situation, try to make some compromises. you find some awesome vegan recipes (try them out first tho) to cook for him. and then agree to cook meat & cheese for him X times a week. (you could even say no red meat?)
that said, the longer you stay vegan, the more meat is going to gross you out. especially raw meat. IMO, if/when that time comes, it's totally ok to only cook veggie stuff for your man. and he doesn't get to complain about it.

good luck and PM me if you want any recipes or tips!

Hey wow thanks everyone--awesome responses! I had my first small challenge last night at work: our chef made cookies for us. I knew they weren't vegan (I'm sure he used butter), but I decided to have two. I can't resist homemade chocolate chip cookies! Other than that it's been all fruits, veggies, & nuts. Haven't made it to the health food store yet but I can't wait to start trying meat substitutes and experimenting with tofu & whatnot. I'm looking at this as kind of a new hobby. It seems like there is a lot of room for imagination when it comes to planning my new diet.

Ok so to respond to your responses:

I found a few websites with lists of vegetarian (if not vegan) options on chain menus. Here's an example: http://godsdirectcontact.us/com/vege...estanrants.htm. Until I get the hang of eating vegan, I figure I can check one of these websites before I go to a restaurant. Also maybe I could eat a little before hand, so that if I'm stuck with a side salad I won't go hungry. I've already gotten used to carrying a few vegan snacks (mostly oranges, bananas, nuts) with me to make sure I don't go hungry or get tempted by stuff that I don't want to eat.

To goodkittie: I hear what you're saying about judging people by the choices they make, but I feel that some people just aren't ready to limit themselves. We are programmed by society to think that meat, dairy, & eggs are part of a "healthy, balanced diet." Eating vegan is a complete overhaul from the standard American diet. I would not have been able to do this without a huge desire to change my life. I don't want to look down on my omnivorous friends & loved ones due to different dietary practices.

To pixie: Here's a link to the book on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Skinny-Bitch-K...6779314&sr=1-1. It's packaged as a regular diet book but I found it to be pretty radical as far as promoting veganism.

Sasha, I am relieved to know there IS vegan chocolate. A friend of mine is a raw food chef and she is going to give me her recipe for vegan "cheesecake." I liked your point that eating well 99% of the time is way better than nothing at all. I'm going to put a lot of effort into this, take any necessary supplements, to make sure I stay healthy. I read that a lot of vegans are B-12 deficient...well I think I still have a lot of learning left but I am really trying to educate myself. Partly because now my mom is all into veganism too (I doubt she'll last, but I'm encouraging her anyway), and now she's coming to me with questions every day like I'm the expert.

MsClaire--what an ass! I feel ya though, several years ago I had an emotionally abusive boyfriend who would point out different features on my face & body that he thought I should "have fixed," like a nose job, boob job, etc. And guess what now I'm about to be a college graduate, have backpacked through Europe, and he's still where I left him. But I digress...I would definitely have to be with someone who respects my decisions even if he doesn't make the same ones. But that's true with any lifestyle. I mean it's kinda like stripping...a guy is either positive, supportive, and encouraging, or he just doesn't get it. I'm sorry about your health problems and I hope that your dietary restrictions are making a big difference in how you feel (for the better of course).

And yeah everyone else thanks so much! lol this post is way long and I need to hit the gym...

oh one more thing: maybe we should look into making a sticky in this section, or even opening up a new section where we can post recipes. Not necessarily just veggie recipes, but whatever kinds of cooking tips that we've come across or invented. What do you guys think of that? I mean we have a whole section dedicated to music, but EVERYONE eats!

Oh, wah wah wah. Not to be a cunt or anything, but there is no way that I could afford NOT to eat meat, or at least eggs. I have severe anemia that is very hard to balance, and I'm not going to not get sick because it meant a chicken had to die, sorry. Our bodies were meant to eat meat. If you don't want to, don't but don't make it like people who do are fucking animal torturers or some such shit.

I've thought about becoming a vegetarian can't do the whole vegan thing but meat is just so damned tempting.

I admire everyone's self discipline. I'm just too addicted to sins of the flesh (cooked and otherwise lol) One of my friends was a vegan. She looked fucking hot, so it can't be too bad for you. I try to stick to chicken and fish though. I've cut back alot. Congrats again

Oh hon, don't let that get to you. I admit that her comment irked me for a moment too but as a person who follows a bodybuilding lifestyle, I just had to laugh and brush it off. Otherwise, I'd spend most of my day choking out scrawny mofos who get all up in my grill about my eating habits.

Honestly, I commend anyone who makes a true attempt to educate themselves and consciously monitor what they put into their body, even if it directly contradicts what I believe is the proper way to eat. Unfortunately, many people simply aren't capable of extending the same courtesy to others. Either that, or they're just so naive that they believe we all have the same morals and values so if we don't live our lives exactly like them, we must be too cowardly to stand up for what we believe in.

I don't eat things like candy, cookies, cakes, doughnuts, chips, soda, etc. and I have one godiva truffle once a year as my ONLY chocolate. It took me awhile, but I now see the humor in someone telling me I only eat meat because I have no self control as they stuff their face with vegan chocolate cake. It IS funny.

It's Day 4 for me...so far doing well, feeling great. I plan to indulge a bit at Thanksgiving--no meat products, but def. some butter on my mashed potatoes . The whole thing is almost like a new hobby, there's so much to learn and experiment with.

Don't get me wrong. Most vegetarians and vegans don't have an eating disorder (I've been healthy for several years already) but I became a vegetarian while I had one. I was giving up everything already and I don't remember I ever had a temptation to eat meat again. The choise just took place but I don't remember making it really.

The becoming a vegan day is something I remember better. It was 17th of July in 2004. I was at a summer job (a mall) and thought: oh well I can buy soy yoghurts (for the break) as well as they're there right next to the milky ones. For some time I drank soy milk and stuff but later I noticed it's better for my tummy not to drink them (mind you, I take calcium supplements, vitamin d drops and b12). Now I drink them just occasionally.

I'm going to go to a wedding as a guest in January. I'm afraid the ones responsible for the food don't have a clue about veganism so I'm politely and in detail describe what's okay. I'll get mad if I visit one more gathering where I can have nothing but tea and coffee.

Im so proud that if you want to be a vegan or vegetarian you are trying it!

I stopped eating fish and seafood when I was a kid then stopped eating the rest of carcass before I turned fifteen. I never regretted the decision once. It was probably the best choice I made. I'm and ovo-lacto veggie. I considered going vegan but never tried it. But I am addicted to cheese.

I never had a relationship issue of somebody complaining about me eating carcass, but if I did I would end the relationship. If my bf wants to eat carcass I make him cook the carcass in a separate pan with separate utensils. And I refer to meat as carcass, lol. Its kinda a silly habit.

    Good for you

I've been vegetarian (with occasional "oops" incidents) for the past three years. I've made a lot of vegan substitutions, but I too am addicted to cheese. Swiss, cottage, and otherwise, I really can't let it go.......

My best advice is that if you get a craving and eat some sushi with fish, or get drunk and eat a cheesestick at a party, don't stress over it or feel like all is lost. Just keep going forward!

And it is fun to look at it like a hobby - I'm a lot more adventurous with cooking now than I ever was as an omnivore. I've actually re-read parts of Skinny Bitch a few times, when I needed the extra motivation. The weight loss and better complexion are a nice added bonus to feeling good about what you put in your body.

i've been vegan for five years. in that time, my health has greatly improved as has my awareness of what i eat.

check out vegweb.com for tons and tons and tons of vegan recipes. not all of them are stellar though, so read the comments before you decide on one to make. good vegan cookbooks include: "how it all vegan" "in the garden of vegan" and "veganomicon".

there's an online vegan cooking show called "in the post punk kitchen", look it up.

and as far as eating butter on your mashed potatoes on thanksgiving, check out earth balance brand margarine. it's delicious!

    important things of note!

*don't spend money on things like tofurkey, and fake vegan cheese, and veggie dogs all the time. they're expensive, and they're really processed, so even though they taste good, they're not super nutritive (although they are far better for you than the real thing! vegan cheese tastes like shit though, so i advise against wasting your time with it)
*make sure to vary your protein sources. soy is good for you, but there is such thing as too much of a good thing. you don't want to eat too much of it and develop an allergy or something. beans and rice, when eaten together, form a complete protein with amino acids and everything, so things like burritos, jambalayas, etc are great for you! also, don't forget about nuts and seeds.
*another reason it's important not to overdo the soy is because it's high in estrogen. this is beneficial to some people, if you're having difficulty putting on enough body fat or something, and makes me feel good, clears my skin some, helps regulate my period etc, but too much can be dangerous for some people.
*don't carb out! too many vegans i know (including myself) have fallen victim to the carbohydrate addiction. while delicious and filling, most simple carbs are pretty lacking in vitamins and minerals. you can circumvent this a lot by eating whole grains and whole wheat pastas, etc.

let me know how it's going! pm me if you need any other vegan tips or advice.
