Who could know Silicon Valley could be so dangerous...

SANTA CLARA — A recently laid off high-tech employee opened fire Friday afternoon inside the Santa Clara office where he used to work, police said, killing the CEO and two others and sparking a massive manhunt that spread throughout the South Bay.

Santa Clara police identified Jing Hua Wu, 47, of Mountain View as the gunman who shot to death two men and one woman with a handgun before driving off in a silver SUV, thought to be a rented Mercury Mountaineer.

... well, it has been 'taken for granted' by many people that the US Tech industry could never experience a serious downturn. Obviously, reality offers a different viewpoint.

    In the final analysis ...

    - the vast majority of tech industry profit dollars are derived from 'business to business' transactions. Thus if a 'regular' business experiences hard times, one of the first available options re cutting expenses is to postpone spending to upgrade IT hardware and software.

    - with a few obvious exceptions, US tech industry offerings to consumers fall into the 'luxury' category. As such, hard pressed consumers can quickly cut purchases of new tech, or 'downscale' their purchases towards lower cost foreign options.

    - again with a few obvious exceptions, over the past several years the majority of new growth has occurred in overseas markets. US tech companies have generally been slow to expand their global presence ( usually accompanied by a shrinkage of their US presence ), but have recently been strongly motivated to do so.

    - even among the exceptions ( Intel and Microsoft immediately come to mind ), global aggregate demand is being reduced by the downturns in 'expanding' markets for their products i.e. China, India, Russia

Also, I am told that many tech industry workers have 'grown up' in a corporate culture that once catered to the personal preferences of workers to the point of compromising corporate profitability. It must come as a major shock when such a 'corporate' culture must be sacrificed, and a huge shock when that 'corporate' culture eventually says ''''thanks for devoting yourself body and soul to the company for the past 5 years .... but your job has been outsourced to India ... don't let the door hit you in the ass'. However, if you want to continue working for the company, we can offer you a job in Bangalore for $15,000 per year !''''
