So, I took a "teaser" pole dancing class today. Since I was the only one there, it ended up being one-on-one instruction. The instructor was super nice and knowledgeable. I told her that I had been dancing for about a month and was eager to learn pole tricks in a safe, controlled environment under the supervision of an expert.
"Ooh, don't tell the other instructor (who is also the owner) that you strip," she said.
She explained that the owner is Christian, and that the classes follow a "don't ask, don't tell" policy if you are stripper. The owner's reasons for this:
1. She doesn't want to alienate her conservative clientele
2. She doesn't want nudity at the classes (because strippers just don't know HOW to keep their clothes on, even when they aren't at work)
Does anyone else think this is completely ridiculous? I mean, I expect to encounter anti-stripper prejudice sometimes, but not in a pole dancing class! It's like being turned away from yoga because you're Hindu and they don't want the Christians to be turned off by your blue, eight-armed gods.
I'm still going to take the classes, because this one was really fun, but I hate that I'm going to have to be all paranoid about the owner finding out that I'm a stripper.
