    Default Banning music in clubs...

Have any songs or artists been banned in the club you work at?

There is this club I work at that has papers all over giving a list of the things that can not be played. The list goes a little something like this:

    no

    lil wayne lollipop
    got money
    no T.I
    no blah
    blah
    blah

this music sickens me and if I hear it being played because you requested it blah blah blah whatever

    your fearless leader
    (managers name here)

what the fuck? First of all I only listen to rock on stage so I never have or would request any rap or r&b. My problem and issue is I feel that the manager is a racist bastard...the reason why is because they can't play lil wayne got money but the dude from korn remade the same song but they can play that? You don't want to hear songs about making it rain on strippers yet we can hear songs about suicide and raping children? I'm lost.

anyway...have any songs/artists that have been banned in your club?

Any song with the words "nigga," or "cunt."

Other than that, we can play anything.

...what's wrong with TI? I simply couldn't work there. lol I loves my TI. I've heard of his music being banned at other clubs, too.

Yeah like really hard rap (like I got in trouble for dancing to Pimp On by ToShort but I say if the DJ had it, it's really his fault right? but I digress) no heavy metal type shit, obviously no slow music, nothing super duper poppy (like spice girls)

We can play hip hop like the kind of stuff that's banned by you! Lollipop? What the hell is offensive about that.......??? Great now that damn song is going to be stuck in my head all night....

tupac is pretty much banned. we're only allowed to play it after midnight, and when certain managers aren't there.

My club will only play things that are the middle of the road of their genre. Regular rock, soft rap, unassuming techo. BORING. There is never any energy in the room, be it good or bad.

I don't think its racist.. some clubs are just like that. When I worked at cheetah they wouldn't play hip hop because they didn't want to attract "thugs" or a rowdy crowd... at my new club they pretty much play w.e we want. I don't make a huge deal about the music... I'll dance to just about anything.lol.

not to talk shit or criticize you in anyway, but isn't the assumption that people that enjoy hip hop - i.e., young urban folks, usually black - are "thugs" and unwanted in your strip club, a little bit racist?

My customer requested "throw some D's" the other night and the DJ said he couldn't play it b/c it was "too ghetto" haha yet he plays more ghetto sh1t all night by choice..

At my club the only music they won't play is slow jams..

It gets frustrating and it changes from club to club why the DJs aren't allowed to play certain music. Usually it's hip-hop and rap, but sometimes the owner limits the amount of slow jams, as well as, heavy metal music.

I feel like I'm dancing to records because the music is so outdated. I can't do anything about all of the music complaints that we get and it gets annoying when custys keep asking, WTF?

I've been to really nice clubs that play "ghetto music," so whats really the problem? Sounds like management has yet another bug up their butts, plain and simple. There needs to be more variety. I've been to a club that played all rock and I damn near fell asleep I was so bored.

    Help, our music sucks...

I was the Queen of getting music banned. Not purposely though!! I love my music very much and I always picked stuff that no one else in the club danced to. This is a little of what I got banned.

    Mudvayne
    some Combichrist
    Evanescence
    Lacuna Coil
    Nightwish
    Ministry
any Rammestein that wasnt Du Hast (gey cuz i hate that one in particular)
    Avenged Sevenfold
    BTO
    Black Label Society
    Cradle of Filth
Genitorturers (this one killed me, i loved loved loved dancing to this)
    Killswitch Engage

....yeah so on and so forth. I love my music of all sorts but apparently I push too many buttons with it.

not to me. because around here everyone my age listens to hip hop... it isn't just usually black people. The only reason why I would assume that hip hop does attract "thugs" is because there are alot of songs that refer to drugs, violence, and being well.. a thug. It has nothing to do with race to me.

Seriously? Evanescence I can kinda understand because some people hate on them because of overexposure, so a certain share of the customers might react negatively. But what's objectionable about Lacuna Coil? What about Within Temptation? (I never understood the attraction to Nightwish because Tarja's voice made me cringe, but I haven't heard Anette Olzon's stuff.)

I understand the concept of playing music that appeals to a certain crowd -- a target demographic -- for business reasons. Problem is, most managers use some blanket judgment that's flawed and thus, not in sync with the desired customers, rather than real research or even reasonable intuition based on familiarity with the music.

    Most rap. R&B is OK.

We're not allowed to play "heavier" music (metal and faster electronic/Dance hall) until the club has a certain number of people, or it's later in the night.

I've worked in a lot of clubs that attempted to ban hip hop and r&b (never worked b/c girls complained). The club I'm in now tried to ban rap and reggae, but the DJ complained saying that they were being racist towards him and the music he likes. For now, it's just no slow songs (though there are 2 slow songs that they let me dance to).

Also, they're limiting the curses so the DJ's have the radio version of most songs.

Is Tupac banned in every club now? I've never worked anywhere that it was allowed. One time at my old club they let me play "Are U still down" with Tupac and Jon B, but I guess that's cause it's not really a typical Tupac song, it's more of an R&B ballad.

True. It's not about race, IMO. "Thugs" or "Gangster wannabes" or whatever to me is about a certain attitude that one posesses. We all know that dudes of every color who adopt this attitude act like a bunch of wannabe jackasses....

My club usually won't play hardcore rap or very heavy metal. Sometimes an occasional song will slip by, though. I really hate the musical selection of the one DJ that works there though, his philosophy is that if it wasn't made between 1980-1995, he isn't playing it, period. So annoying.

Most customers dont want to hear "Nigga nigga nigga" all night coming from certain songs. Thats not a racist statement, thats the truth. 50-60 yr old men, dont want to hear it, and thats a clubs bread and butter. Not to say that that music is wrong, just inappropriate to play in certain clubs, especially strip clubs. When i dj'd, I played Ice Cube"when will they shoot" for some girl, and the owner/mgr went apeshit about it. Most of the gangsta stuff and the really bad stuff shouldnt be played in clubs IMO, it brings down the class of the club.

There were also times when we couldnt play death/hardcore metal either. why? mgr's didnt like it, and lets be honest, those arent the easiest songs to understand.

I think a little bit of cursing(maybe 1 cure word) during a song isnt bad, and some songs dont sound right w/o them.

Keep in mind girls, they're not doing this to pick on you, be racist, or anything else. They're doing this, b/c they dont want to piss off the custmoer who would be willing to spend some serious cash in your clubs, it's nothing personal, or directed at you in anyway, and you shouldnt take it as such.

Like the owner of my olf club used to say"wanna hear that stuff? buy yourself an ipod".

I totally understand banning songs that Managers feel are too "ghetto," has crazy profanity in them, and are dark and sadistic or whatever. Although I have no control over the situation, my problem with this issue is when clubs ban an entire genre of songs just because of a few bad apples.

Some of these managers don't know the difference between Diddy and Daft Punk. What's wrong with playing the top 40? This list will certainly include rap, but its an edited version and it's mainstream. Playing Lil Wayne and Luda does not turn a stripclub "ghetto," nor, will it run off white collar custys. Everything should be played in moderation and there needs to be a variety. My club has banned all new music coming in and has pulled our song list of everything urban with an attitude. Even our preferred clientele is asking, what's up with the 8-track music, WTF?
