    Default The No-Heat Hair Challenge!

I used to have gorgeous, very long hair. It was soft and silky and easy to style and look amazing.

A guy dumped me, and like an idiot, I coped by treating my hair like a mood ring. Bleach, dye, bleach, dye, highlights, dye, color stripping...my hair was wrecked. And I had to chop over a foot of hair off, taking my hair to about chin length.

I've been growing it out ever since, but it's still only slightly past my shoulders, mostly because I still have to get it chopped off every month or so because of damage from straightening irons, curling irons, etc.

I'm determined to grow it out, so I'm swearing off heat-styling. No blow dryers, curling iron, straightening irons, etc, an dplenty of velcro rollers and wet setting!

Any ideas for other ways to style hair without heat? And does anyone else want to join me for support? I'm going to need it, I'm already itching for my irons.

you can get heat protective styling products as well as heat protective/or damage repairing shampoos and conditioners.

my hair is naturally very curly, and right now pretty short. so at work, i straighten it. but only at work.

depending on your hair texture (is it curly, wavy, thick, thin, straight, what?) there are tons of different products you can use by applying when hair is wet or damp, and allowing to air dry.

in the mean time, i would recommend hot oil treatments and a leave in deep conditioner. you can probably still heat style your hair, as long as you do it only when absolutely necessary, and take the precautions to repair and protect your hair.

Those "heat protective/repair" things are crap. They repair and protect the LOOK of hair, but it's still damaged underneath, and will continue to split and break.

I used them for a while, and thought my shiny hair was healthy. Then I went to my trusted stylist, who washed my hair and showed how far the breakage had gone up the shaft because I thought my hair was "protected".

Yep its just a cover up you have to cut off all the unhealthy hair to get it back how it used to be. I did this over a year ago and my hair is more healthier than it has ever been.

Just try wearing you hair curly or wavy. Maybe you could get it braided while wet and let it dry to get a really wavy look or just set with rollers.

Try using the Wen haircare system- or the generic from Sally's called "Hair One". It is a terrific product!
My stylist keeps pushing to trim my hair, but I have gone 2 highlight apts. without getting a trim, and it looks great, and I also save money on a cut, as I don't really need it since I have no split ends. Often stylists' push services, but they are not always necessary. I highlight my hair heavily, blowdry, and flat iron it as well, but my hair looks, feels, and is much healthier. I also use Kerastase hair masque, Megatek for hair growth and take lots of vitamins. I often do an olive oil treatment as well.
If you do not want to use heat syling, you can always braid your hair in one or many braids to create waves, or use basic foam rollers.

I very rarely blow dry my hair, in fact I haven't heat styled it in months bc I was having the same issue you're describing.....and believe me it made a huge difference. I have naturally curly hair, so I just put in some styling creme to control it and then spray it with shine spray.

You can also use old fashioned curlers (like the velcro kinds) with no heat if you want curl...

Awww, so sorry, hun! I rarely use heat, but in the winter, I do blow dry somewhat, cause of my hair length & the cold weather here. I do try to wash later at night so I don't have to go out. I dry the roots mainly, flipping my hair around to shake out the water as much as possible. There was a towel I bought, (can't remember from where) that's supposed to absorb much more, but I don't use it that much. I do use 2 towels, & before I even start drying, I gently squeeze the water out, & shake it around.
Have you checked out the tourmaline dryers, they're supposed to be the most gentle, although expensive, I see Conair has one that's not too bad. There's also the Paul Mitchell product that supposed to make it faster to dry, but I haven't used that either.
Try a little avacado oil, mostly on your ends (natural vit.E). Aveda has a new line of moisturizing, & deep conditioning products. I love Aveda, it's worth the extra $.
I also use leave in conditioners, (mainly on my ends) both the sprays & the cream types.
    Good luck dear.

i used to have long hair and i never ever used heat on my hair, i would squeeze out the water and let it dry naturaly, and then i had it cut a few weeks ago and the hair dresser just cut it straight across! and she took off more than i wanted so i had to have it cut again and now its not even below my shoulder!
hair grows at around 1cm a month so you wont even notice the difference in the first few months, but give it a year, which isnt long realy and you should be fine x

I am doing the same thing, because when I do blowdry it makes the frizzy flyaways do their thing.
If you want to naturally dry naturally wavy hair to make it look more curly, I started doing this:
putting all of these products in my hair after detangling it with leave in conditioner
mousse, styling gel, hair spray, curl cream
scrunch hair with hands, cup hair with towel
then scrunch the hair close to the head, get hair like your going to put it up, squishing it scrunched to your head, put a pony around the scrunched hair stuck to your head (looks like scrunched hair in a bun) no strands should hang or you will have straight strands in curly hair. leave it up all night, take it down to airdry then put it back up (repeating steps above) after adding a little more mousse.

There's also curlers! Put 'em in, sleep on 'em or leave them in all day. Next day, curly hair.

You can blow-dry your hair without heat, by the way. If you have a blow-dryer with a cool setting, use that.
