    Default Debt Card Fraud

Sunday I got a call from my banks fraud department asking me if had had made purchases in a Walmart several states away. It turns out someone used my debit account number to make about $500 of purchases. I also made a lot of small purchases over the weekend so now my account is overdrawn and in addition I have about $200 in overcharges. I have been told the money will be put back in my account, but they would not comment on a time frame. I have a couple questions

1 how does someone make purchases with just my debit card number at a Walmart ? I have never tried to just give them a just a number, but I would assume they would require the card and pin

2 If anyone has experience with this how long did it take to straighten out ? I'm about to go on a trip for Thanksgiving and it will not be good if I don't have any money in my bank account and I have to put everything on credit cards. I do have a direct deposit coming in on Friday, but it will not be much more than my overdrawn amount.

i dont know, it sounds wierd the wayn your bank operates, when i had card fraud they immediately put it ll back into my account, reversed the charges for being overdrawn and told me they would check it out.
a few weeks later i got a letter saying it was fraudulent so the monney refunded would stay in my account x

I use a debit card all the time without a pin#. When I go in, I tell them run it as a CC.Not a problem. As for the refunding by the back, my sister had to call the police and make a complaint. When she had the case #, the bank fixed it within a few days, including dropping all additional fees caused by the fraud.

The other question you should ask, is how they got the number. Do you surf without protection? Walmart clerk?

I've heard a couple of stories about this lately. How it gets handled depends upon the bank. I've heard that B of A reimburses almost immediately. Some other banks (generally smaller local ones) may take ten business days.

Did they get your account number, or just the number on your debit card? If they got your account number, you need to close it right away. Once the direct deposit goes in, it will give the crook with your number more money to steal.

actually, debit card fraud is rapidly becoming the method of choice versus credit cards. Reason one is that with a credit card, the perp is actually stealing the credit card company's money ... thus enforcement tends to be more stringent. Reason two is that many smaller banks may allow significant periods of time to pass before suspicious debit card charges are recognized and acted on ... thus allowing the perp a much better chance of disappearing.

    ^^That is so true.

I had my purse stolen over the weekend while my bank was closed. They didn't process my call to report it stolen until monday. By then, I had been wiped out. It took them just over a week to clear everything and give me money back.

Also, many cc systems have a manual entry procedure for cards who metallic strips aren't working. If the person who robbed you also had a friend in Wal-mart, then it's possible that this is a regular scam they are running.
