(snip)ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis city leader frustrated with the police response to rising crime called Tuesday on residents to arm themselves to protect their lives and property.

Alderman Charles Quincy Troupe said police are ineffective, outnumbered or don't care about the increase in crime in his north St. Louis ward. St. Louis has had 157 homicides in 2008, 33 more than last year at this time.

"The community has to be ready to defend itself, because it's clear the economy is going to get worse, and criminals are getting more bold," Troupe, 72, said Tuesday.

Troupe said that when he and residents approached a district police commander last year, they were told "there was nothing he could do to protect us and the community ... that he didn't have the manpower."

Police did not immediately return requests for comment. Chief Dan Isom told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he understands Troupe's frustration but doesn't support citizens arming themselves.

Carrying guns, he said, is not a "recipe for a less violent community."(snip)

Yeah, it's happened more ofter than you think. The D.C. Police Chief even said for citizens to buy shotguns.

Police know that untrained, frustrated people with guns doesn't reduce violence. That's about the only thing they know for a fact.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

When you outlaw guns, only outlaws have guns.

Where to these outlaws get their guns? Not from states that do not require background checks or police auctions. Gun shows, theft etc ae left. Wher are most of the thefts from? Gun owners, especially those who do not secure them. Of course that's a poor excuse, but reality rules over theory any day.

wrong. Even though I am not a fan of the ATF, they have rightfully been cracking down on dealers who deal illicitly. In Europe, you can still get guns on the black market, even in England, where they are banned.

as to the criminal element obtaining guns illegally, I'm absolutely certain that no Mexican drug operation, no 'transnational' gangs etc. are going to have a legal / moral problem including a crate of illegal AK47's / large caliber pistols / automatic weapons along with their next illegal drug shipment !!!

The much larger point being alluded to by the St. Louis politician is this ...

Hard economic times motivates more and more people to resort to violent crime in conjunction with ommittimg thefts, burglaries etc. as a means of dealing with their immediate 'cash shortage'. At the same time, hard economic times motivates state and local gov'ts to cut spending in proportion to their declining tax revenues - with a favorite 'target' for such spending cuts being a cutback in the number of police. Fewer police on the street means a lower probability that a criminal will be apprehended while committing a theft, burglary etc., thus emboldening even more criminals to attempt thefts and burglaries.

This 'snowball' situation amounts to a double whammy for law abiding suburban residents that abide by gun control laws. The likelihood that they will be chosen as the target for thefts and burglaries is increasing, and at the same time the likelihood that the thieves and burglars will be 'taken off the street' by police is decreasing.

I've watches several gangland documentaries where gangs stole from gun shops. The guns aren't coming from people like me and you, they're brought into the country illegally or bought from people who sell them illegally. They are not stolen from everyday gun owners.

Compare New Orleans and Ohio, both of which were flooded. Those Ohioans sure know how to loot. It's all about the individual(s), not 'hard times'.

Amazing isn't it. Atleast MO is a "Shall issue" State, I am not sure if it is a "Castle Doctrine" State like CO is currently.

Same place they get their illicit drugs, undocumented immigrants, and other contraband. Just replace "gun" with something you think the government has no business preventing people from having or doing and it will instantly make sense.
    Former SCJ now in rehab.
