I thought they were pretty terrible also, but yikes! I reckon Barbie has her monopoly back.
Hahaha! Can't help but love it because I've always thought the Bratz were tacky wanna be knock offs.
When the Bratz initially came out. My niece loved them. I didn't think it was too bad. They were definitely trendy, more urban, and more realistic compared to Barbie anyway. Once they started expanding into the kids and trying to compete with the Ken doll and spinning off with so many different ones it got alittle ridiculous. This is why I think Mattel finally sued. It's like they were trying to take over and knock Barbie off her pedestal? After all, sales did start to slip on the iconic beauty. Saucey...![]()

Yup- the only reason Mattel went after them was because they were the only doll makers that hit them in their wallets.
Fuck Barbie and Mattel. I won't buy any for my daughter. Not like she liked Barbie anyway- she was always a Bratz fan.

I'm not saying I'm a barbie fan. (I had a Cabbage Patch kids and an NES.) I just think the Bratz dolls are far worse.
When it comes to dolls for kids, very few truly represent diversity. I realize the Bratz dolls has some extreme features, but they kinda remind me of the cartoon character Stripperella. It's all fun, remember, they are dolls. I really don't see a problem with this. I believe they are so popular because they are different and their styles represent more of what's going on today and not this fantasyland Barbie creates. Me likey the Bratz. I'm bummed Mattel is forcing their hand. Enough with tradition, Barbie must die, lol. I'm not sure what bothers you so much about these dolls. I let my niece decide when we went to the toy store and it was a quick defeat. She really liked the Bratz dolls over Barbie.

They're just dolls.

Wrong!!!
They're a multimillion dollar industry. Hence, the ensuing legal battle. Mattel sued because the guy that designed the dolls for MGA (Carter Bryant) was still working for them when he came up with the concept.
Somehow, I don't think Mattel would have been fussed if the Bratz dolls didn't impact on their profits, but it was costing them $100 million annually in lost profits (assuming that Mattel would have gotten the profits that MGA were making).
And with that sort of numbers (and a reasonable case to pursue) American companies reach for their lawyers.
Carter Bryant signed a legal document about what constitutes intellectual property rights when he was working for Mattel - so when he demonstratably came up with the concept of the Bratz dolls while working for them, MGA were wide open to legal action.
I've seen more that a few posts from dancers on this site complaining that another girl was copying their 'look'. What would your reaction be if her copying your 'look' was costing you serious money?

...damn, just when they were about to release their new line of dolls called "Biatchez" .....or was it "Ho'z"?

Eh. I suppose I see your point.
Bratz are ugly little things..

Not only are Bratz creepy, but I dont think they sent the best message to little girls... Sure, when theyre in their teens theyre gonna wear short skirts, but you dont wanna be letting your 5 year old play with dolls in teeny hoochie-skirts really.... Plus, a brand name that makes a 'brat' sound like a good thing....

Trashy as the Bratz dolls are, I hate it when the consumer gets their hand forced because of some legal mumbo jumbo that the common shopper buying the product at a retail store doesn't understand.
The Bratz dolls would not having turned into the billion dollar business that they have if not for choice those consumers made. If Mattel had wanted that business, they should have made a product more in line with what their consumers wanted.

As people stated above, it's the way they style them that I hate. They are overly-made up and dress like they are drunk college girls at a frat house halloween party. Half their outfits look like they could be on the Leg Avenue/Dreamgirls wall at Spirit Halloween. I think they send the wrong message.
The argument is that the person who invented the Bratz dolls did it while he was working at Mattel...thus, the idea (and any profits from it) should have been Mattel's.
What will likely happen is that Mattel will take over production, etc of this line and voila...we will once again have Bratz dolls...ugh.

That likely will happen. The thing is that this case could still continue though the legal system for some time during which the wrongdoing party is barred from producing anything with the Bratz name attached to it, and after Christmas must remove any existing supplies from the store shelves. This will likely get collectibles speculators to start snatching the dolls up, so they can sell them at a high price after they're no longer available. More speculators hoarding them means less of them going to kids (take that any way you want). Do we really want to repeat the Tickle Me Elmo, Beanie Baby, Pokemon Trading Card fiascos?
Kind of what irks me is that this story really hasn't circulated that much through the mainstream press yet, and I'm sure a number of parents who have been buying the dolls aren't aware yet that they're about to become contraband.

I think that point about little girls dressing like hookers is bull and blown out of proportion.
Little girls are more affected by their home enviornment and TV commercials, magazine ads more than a plastic dolly.
I always liked the selection- different shades and 'personalities'. Not just chocolate or vanilla. Boring! They were a hit with with kids because they are marketed as a group of best friends who are popular and love fashion.
Barbie was old news and tired, doing the same thing over and over again. Mattel seemed to be more interested in their collectible dolls for adults than little girls.
No one mentions how the Bratz makers actually toned down the outfits, and released the Bratz Kidz line which are not trashy or overly made up at all. People who don't buy the toys don't know these things, they hear 1 or 2 parents complaining then just jump on the bandwagon.
Want to keep sexual messages away from your daughters? Keep an eye on what they watch and read. Get angry at the archaic messages in regards to gender issues and fight sexist ideals that need to be done away with. This affects girls (and boys) more than any freaking doll that will become old news as soon as she becomes to old to play with them.
