    Default exercising when sick

Ive got a cold (it came on very suddenly, but we've been under a lot of stress until now, so Im wondering if my body's just let down its defenses) Nothing in my chest so far, no sore throat etc.

Not a real fever or anything (I just took my temp 34.8c) but Im feeling hot and cold.

Im doing so well, lost 5kg in 5 weeks, just through really calorie counting, since Ive been under the pump at work, and with the family staying had no time to exercise, apart from a few stretches in our bedroom.

I want to cycle up to the pools (mainly for hubbies sake, since he should exercise) and have a tiny swim (maybe 200 metres, nothing like the usual1.5 km) but wonder if I should stay home.

What do you do when youre under the weather?

i work out when i have a cold , it usually energizes me , but i hear you arent supposed to.

I wouldnt exercise outdoors though its snowing here and the cold can get you sick/sicker. Maybe just do some indoor aerobics and stay hydrated.

    A site I read said:
    Do Not Workout If:

    You have a fever
    You feel nauseous
You are highly contagious and in a public gym

    Workout If:

You just have a mild cold
It's been a couple of days and you are over the worst of it

They said something about your body needing the nutrients to fight off the illness instead of rebuilding muscle tissue.

Also, just curious, but how many calories did you consume per day to lose the weight without exercise?

The rule of thumb I use is if I'm sick from the neck up, I work out. If I'm sick from the neck down then I skip it.

I would have been in public, so I skipped, thank goodness cos Im sicker today.

I used www.calorieking.com.au (its free for Australians) and just told the software that I work in 'sales' (just standing) when I actually work for a mining company and do a fair bit of walking (I did 7km according to my pedometer one day) and lifting heavy stuff. It gave me a limit of around 1700 calories, but as you update your weight twice a week it adjusts and goes down.

oh and Ive been bring instant mac cheese and tuna to work, when Im too tired to make anything healthy, instead of buying a pie or a hamburger from the jiffy van.

OK, not to scare you, but I would be extremely wary of working out sick. Even though it may be tempting to not break an exercise routine, working out may actually prolong the illness and in rare cases viruses can damage heart muscles. This is not commonly known, but it's true. A coworker of one of my friends in his 20s DIED because of heart damage inflicted by working out while sick. So if there's a chance your illness is viral in nature, I'd skip the workout. There's a reason why your body feels bad - it's saying it needs rest.

^ Thanks for posting that !

I can be a bit of a gym junkie myself so, I usually do still head in if it's something minor.

I'm convinced I now have asthma as an adult after ignoring the flu and continuing with a very heavy workout routine. I noticed after that time I started to get the occasional asthma cough or wheeze in cold weather. I never had suffered from before and there is no family history of it. My conviction of this is enforced by the fact that the only time I ever have a full asthma attack is when I foolishly ignore cold/flu symptoms and exercise.

If I just have the common cold I usually work out if I am up for it. But sometimes it may not be as an intense of a workout. I usually don't get sick so when I do my body is trying to tell me something. Remember to always get at least 8 hours of sleep bc that can help with weight loss and overall health. But if you have anything that is making you sore, tired, fever...that sort of stuff just rest and drink plenty of water and gatorade.

I'll work out while sick, but I try to take it easy. Maybe just a brisk walk or riding a bike.

If I'm deathly ill I won't go in, if it's a minor cold or something, I'll still go, but take it easy. A little weight training, stretching, and for sure a 15 minute stay in the steam room.

Speaking of which, are great for colds/upper respiratory yuckies. I was feeling a little under the weather last week...sore throat, sniffles....2 sessions in the steam room and I was completely cured.

im really freaking out about missing the gym today.

but im all heady, sniffles, coughing every 5 seconds, dizzy, cold and having hot n cold flushes too.

Thing is i dont know if its flu or caffeine withdrawal. had a bit of a caffeine problem lately by consuming too much. today had none and dont even feel like iv woken up properly. im considering banging down a few pro plus right now and going for a bike ride. but something is telling me no!

^baby does your gym have a steam room? If so, pack yourself a big thing of cold icewater and go sweat it out in there. I guarantee your cold will start to dissipate after just one sitting.

Ya if you feel like that I wouldn't suggest working out, but def a yes on the steam room. My guy is a big advocate for sweating out your sickness.
