Default How to learn how to play the market?

I don't feel as though I know enough about stocks to be comfortable investing in them.

I want to learn how to play the market- what to look for in stocks, how to read charts, etc. Classes, books, recommendations on anything that will help teach me! Or maybe telling me how you all came to learn about stocks and how to play the market?

I understand that the market isn't doing well right now. Just looking to learn!

    There is some advice here:

    http://www.stripperweb.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=126564

My number one piece of advice would be to work under the assumption that many people don't know what they're talking about, even if they act like they do and have lots of charts and books and stuff behind them This does make learning things a bit hard, though, since it's unclear at times what is right and what isn't.

Read, read, read and when you don't think you can read any more, read some more. Read annual reports, read SEC filings, read the news about the companies and industries you are interested in. Read Forbes and Fortune magazines. Read the Wall Street Journal. Read your local edition of the Business Journal. Read the analysts, if you can. Read the prospectus. Prospectii if you are investing in more than one new issue or mutual fund.

Once you think you have four or five companies you might be interested in, go visit them. Some will welcome small investors, others won't. It is a lot easier to visit local companies. It is also easier to find out what a company is doing if it is closer to you. For example if you live in or near Peoria, it's a lot easier to follow Caterpiller than if you live in Cleveland. But, RPM (a small investor friendly company) is easier to follow if you live in Cleveland. While I don't rule out companies that are farther away, locals are just easier to follow. And, when you are starting out, easy is better.

The Motley Fool is great for learning how to invest over the long term.

By using the words "play the market" I am inferring you want to make money trading stocks.

If you want to learn how to TRADE the market via technical analysis and other systematic trading signals, I suggest you look into www.investools.com I went through their two year PhD program. The Basic Stocks course teaches the basics of fundamental and technical analysis of stocks. If you are interested in the Options and Futures markets, they also offer classes on that.

Technical Analysis doesn't take fundamentals into consideration. The guy who wrote the Book, Tim Knight maintains a free blog at www.slopeofhope.com I'm a regular on the site and was able to Seven-Tuple my IRA since October using his analysis.

I will third on the Motley Fool - love them!

I also learned a lot from "Day Trade Online", but it's probably a bit out dated now.

The other book I really enjoyed was "Greed Is Good: The Capitalist Pig Guide to Investing" - this guy is really smart and can give you simple tricks that really make a difference.

I was doing my trading through AmeriTrade. I thought it was a pretty easy system to learn. I think I started with $1,000 which was their minimum.

If you look online some of the trading systems have a version that is almost like a game. You start with play money and you can use a version that interacts with the real-time rates to see how your decisions would play out.

I really got into penny stocks for awhile. They can be good because you don't have to invest a lot of money at once, but you have to be careful just as you would with regular stocks.

The biggest thing I can tell you is to really THINK before you sell. I invested in pet mico-chipping when it was pennies and then resold... dumb - dumb - dumb! Look at how many people microchip their pets now!
    Don't you ever sleep?
Not at night...that's when the stars have rather better things to do. They're coming out, shining, that sort of thing.

How has it worked out for you? I was reading mixed reviews on it the other day after I saw the infomercial lol. Seems like some people love it, others were saying it was a huge scam. Either way, it is pricey...

Its like any education: you get out of it what you put into it. It's not a magic system. I studied, had homework, and was in constant contact with my coach. As a result my one IRA is up 700% this year( sounds impressive, but not really I turned 2K into 14K the last quarter of 200, and my brokerage account is up 300% (turned 8K into 26K)

Thus, I am very pleased with their education program.
