Maybe all you cat-lovers out there can help me out....

I just got my two cats the Breeze Litterbox System for xmas, and while I was putting in together I noticed on the instructions that they recommend that you have multiple litterboxes for multiple cats. For 2, they suggest a litterbox each, plus an additional one. Is this true?!

Both my cats have always seemed to do fine just sharing one, and I feel like if I keep the old one too, they won't see the need to use the new one. Speaking off, transitioning them to the new one isn't going very successfully!

How many litterboxes do you guys have for your cats?

Is that the litter box that cleans itself? If so, my friend had one, she has two cats and it was too much for it to handle. Kitty poop overload.

When I had two cats I only had one litter boxm they did just fine with it.

It doesn't clean itself, but it has a filter thing so the pee gets sucked up into a pad below the tray (sorry, TMI) and so its easier to just switch out the pads and keep it smelling sweet. You still have to scoop like normal though.

Of course they'd recommend that so they can sell more litterboxes. It's kinda like eye contact solution where they recommend you use a "stream" of solution to clean your contacts.

Two can share a good sized litterbox just fine as long as it's cleaned regularly. At the same time, it's not a bad idea to have a litterbox for each if one cat gets sick.

A trick I've had a lot of success with is putting the old litterbox in the new one and then taking it away once they get used to it.

Ive never had more than one cat at a time, but my sis has two right now and just uses regular ole litter pans/trays...she uses two and said that now they are poopin in one and pissin in the other...cats are finicky so i would just watch em for a while before i invest in a second one...or maybe make the second one a regular cheap one and move a poop into that one and let it sit for a bit and maybe your cats will take up the pee and poop in seperate trays like my sisters...lol...

a qoute from readers digest (cant remember the person who said it though..)

'cats are so unpredictable...you never know how they will ignore you next.'

btw Miss McKenna....you look like Mariska Hargitay on Law and Order (svu)...i always thought she was sooo beautiful! i swear you could be twins....

^^^you had me fooled babe!!!! glad to hear of someone else that loves her too...

    a kitty-kat question for you...

ive never had this problem with any of my cats, but every now and then my bff's cat will out of the blue piss on the sofa or take a dump on the bed...the kitty is litter trained (gotta love the fact that they are soo simple to litter train..) and im sure this is kitties way of getting attention or acting out as she only will do this on the sofa or bed, no where else...any ideas on how to curb this behavior? bff keeps the litter pan imaculate with regular cleanings and litter replacement...but it is a hell of a time trying to clean a sofa every 3 months or so to get that smell out...
    thanks doll.

I have two cats and two litter boxes for each. It happened on accident. The kitten had a UTI and the veterinarian recommended that we use newspaper instead of litter for the kitten. So, that's how it started. Litter for Chris and newspaper for Petey. It spoiled them to have their own litters. They have a preference for which box they like to use so, basically they have their own boxes.

Usually you want multiple trays but it depends on the cats - I had 3 trays for 8 cats and no accidents, but they were big and enclosed, if I was going to use regular trays I'd probably use about 6 for the 8 of them.

That's hard. For a start the most important thing is to remove the smell to the cat's nose, not just a human nose. Which means using a cat-specific cleaner that breaks down the protein in the urine. White wine vinegar in water works but of course stinks of vinegar! It's almost impossible in thick plush fabric.

It can be a dominant behaviour for cats to act like this. First I would try and figure out what it's related to - does she only do it when her owner has people or goes out for longer than usual? In which case perhaps the cat needs to be restricted on those occasions.

For the couch you can try tin foil on the couch when you're away, they hate the feeling. A friend's cat is absolutely fanatical about cleanliness and if both the litter trays have been used, even a little, she will toilet on the couch. So the foil is a permanent solution for this cat, on when you're out, off when you're home.

Providing stability and routine as well as not allowing the cat to ever boss her around may make some difference. Perhaps get into a routine of grooming regularly more to make the cat submit to gentle dominant behaviour than anything else.

There's lots of info out there but it can be really hard and once they have a habits cats are really hard to train out of them, especially with a dominant cat as they don't naturally follow your lead the way dogs do. Good luck!

Yes,ideally you should have a litter box each plus an extra. You should also have litter boxes on every floor if your home is multi level.

Most people dont have that many though. I have two cats and two boxes.
