Default asking those who have Hyper/Hypo-thryroidism and are being treated for info...

I am going to the doctor on Friday, January 3rd to have tests done concerning hypothryoidism, hyperthyroidism, Grave's disease, and such...

I have searched all of SW for these topics and have learned so much and have been all over WebMD and various other sites concerning this...

It was suggested to me by my family doctor when I was 17 that I may be either hypo or hyper but the doctor saw no cause for alarm and didn't do further testing...I am now (at age 25) beginning to notice and have become very concerned about my increasing anxiety and depression (very mild and have up untill lately been able to control it without meds), fatigue, hair loss (though not sure if it is just 'normal' shedding as i have no bald spots and my hair is rather long...), in-ability to gain weight ( I maintain a weight of 110-120 w/o exercise but would like to 'fill out' lol), and insomnia (as i write this I haven't been to sleep since I woke up at noon on Monday and have worked 8-9 hrs each day)...

I was just wondering if any of you had any advice for when I go to see the doctor...I've done a massive amount of research, but would really love to hear from people living with this/these conditions and are being treated. I just want to be as prepared as possible for my appointment and I'm sure there's got to be more info out there other than that I've already found.

Please feel free to PM me if you would prefer.

    Thank you so much SW.

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism a little over a year ago.

Leading up to the diagnosis my symptoms included: my hair coming out in DROVES, dandruff, skin problems like acne (never had a problem with that before), severe anxiety, always exhausted but couldn't sleep...i'd literally go 2 or so days w/o sleeping despite wanting to sleep so bad. The severe exhaustion and anxiety was horrrriiible...

ETA: inability to gain weight was another symptom...if i didn't overeat i'd get too skinny, like 90lbs skinny. Now I'm at a healthy 120lbs from the PTU meantioned below.

The other thing was kidney stones...

They put me on a drug called propylthioracil or PTU for short. My skin cleared up, I could sleep and what not...still got the kidney stones every few months however.

Slowly I needed less and less PTU, since the drug seems to have, at least temporarily, put my Hyperthyroidism in remission. I started taking 6 tablets a day, then finally down to 1. But I stopped taking them after a while, since the drug has some crappy side effects. Everything tastes bad with it, and it was causing hemolytic anemia and problems with my immune system.

I was having to have my TSH blood levels checked once a month but I haven't gone in a while so I have no idea what my levels are after stopping the PTU.

That's been my ordeal....if they notice that your TSH levels are too low (meaning your thyroid hormone levels are too high ...it's an inverse relationship) they're probably going to do some reuptake scans and an ultrasound to check for any nodules or tumors.

If you have any questions PM me.

Just found this thread: Was diagnosed last year with hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) when I was pregnant after blood tests, excessive exhaustion, and extreme weight gain. I got pregnant n weighed 98 lbs, and quickly, like within the first 2 months gained 20 lbs... Dr told me I need to watch what I was eating.. I found it quite strange since I was working 45 hours a week as a nanny to 2-4 very active kids (# of kids changed every other week when the other 2 went to their moms)... Anyways, they put me on synthroid which helped with the weightgain and tiredness...

I had the baby 7 months ago and have been EXTREMELY irritable, TIRED, and UNABLE to loose the rest of my baby weight (Got 10 lbs left to go, FINALLY!!!!) I was also ALWAYS sweating my ass off, like had my air on 65 and frose everyone out the house... and then would wake up in the middle of the night soaking wet sweating again....I finaly went n got my thyroid levels retested and the nurse called me immediately w/ the results saying that my score was 17 and was supposed to be 4.85.. which is strange to me bc I thought I had hypothyroidism, and it sounded like the other one, hyper, where its OVERactive...

Anyhow, I really thought I was goin through post partum depression and wanted to kill everyone around me daily.. Was loosing patience w/ my little one, and SEVERELY bitchy to everyone in my path... I finally broke down n called the dr and told them what was goin on. I suppose I felt as if I could control it on my own, and as time progressed it only got worse...

I called my parents and my mom said she recently went through the same thing since she is going through menopause, where her levels went crazy again and she had to change her dosage levels to accomodate her and it helped her immensely!!! I also found out my twin sis has thyroid probs, and EVERY female on my moms side who has been chcked.. evidentally it runs in our family

To make a LONG story short, I started my meds again 5 days ago and honestly feel like a DIFFERENT person.. I am FULL of energy, lively, and HAPPY again!!!

TRUST ME AND GO GET THE TESTS DONE, YOU WILL FEEL SOO MUCH BETTER IF THIS IS YOUR ISSUE.. YOUR THYROIDS AFFECT SO MANY ASPECTS OF YOUR BODY FROM METABOLISM TO NERVES (ANXIETY, ETC) AND GOOD LUCK GIRL!!! KEEP US POSTED!

    ^^that makes sense.

When you're pregnant you use more thyroid hormone , so sometimes women go into a hypo-state from not having enough to accomodate yourself and the growing child. After the baby though, you use less as you are no longer supporting another being in your body, so with the added synthroid you were taking from when you were pregnant, it's not suprising your levels got too high and you ended up in a hyper-state.

I feel you for sure. When my levels are too high (i have hyperthyroidism...specifically grave's disease), I get soooo horrible irritable and anxious, and sweat a lot....it's just horrible. And I can't sleep if my life depended on it.

i was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism 6 years ago. like most of you my hair thinned out, i lost tons of weight, always felt restless, had irregular heart rhythms, etc. pretty rare for a guy to have it, but i got it.

the doctor put me on PTU for about 2 years and i got better. i was taken off the meds for a year and my thyroid became hyperactive again. i went back on the meds for another year, got better and now im off them again. im currently borderline so i get blood work done once a year, or more often if i feel the symptoms. if my thyroid becomes hyperactive again then im opting for the radioactive iodine treatment, as the PTU can damage the liver if taken for too long.

    good luck with your treatment.

Get a blood test and you will know if your thyroid is normal or not. An under active thyroid is easier to treat than an over active one.

I'm so happy your meds are making you feel better GrlWithTheMost. I'm going into endocrinology, so this is going to be my forte and some of the drugs are the market are seriously awesome.

Quick question don't have to answer if you don't want to: When they thought you had HYPO-thyroidism, did they put you on Synthroid at all?

Hard to comment without knowing which of them it is, but here's info I put up on being treated for hypo, along with info showing t3 improves the effects of SSRIs for those who are on them but not seeing/feeling benefits:

I am also currently being tested cause of many of the same red flags as you. But i am also being tested because my mother had to have her thyroid removed cause it was sooo out of whack that she had horrible mood swings and eventually started growing nods on it. She was tested trough out her life but was always few points off so they would blow it off if your test come back being 1point to low to be considered either go back and ask for a retest or get a second opinion. My mother was only .349 off from her test coming back positive and they sent her home now years later shes paying for not looking further into it.
