    Default Taking Care of Yourself

What are the things you do to take care of yourself...physically, mentally...in this business? How do you handle the late hours, do you rely on sleep aids to get the rest you need, what do you do to keep yourself healthy? I'm exhausted and I've only been at this for 4 days! I can't get the sleep I need. Help.

I found after a month of working I got used to the hours and just started sleeping better - now I can sleep whenever I need to, irrelevant of day/night time...

    Other than that?

I try to get a massage once a week

I take time out, go to the beach, take a few days out in the countryside etc

I eat healthily most of the time, and keep myself hydrated - sounds silly but it really helps

On my days off I try to just rest, work out, eat well and chill out with my Xbox

So yeah.. the shift in times is just jet lag-ish, you should get over it
Moments like this make me want to hug the Internet and say "thank you." Lestat

Pamper your body. Your body is your money.
I get my hair colored trimmed, every 2 mos.
Manicure ( solar)and pedicure as needed.
Lotion excessively for silky skin, aside from shaving every day. (One day I will get laser hair removal)
    Wax eyebrows every month
    Tan or spray tan
    Whiten teeth yearly
    Take vitamins
Work out to de stress and maintain hard body
Never go to work in a bad mood, it will show in your money
When not at work, don't think about it, have fun and leave the bad night at the club when you leave. There's always tomorrow
Keep goal in mind to get out of dancing (college, saving $ for your own business, etc)
Sleep at least 8 hours, I prefer 10
Don't drink so much where you're hung over, it's havoc on your body

I agree with the people who say that you'll get used to the late hours. It is truly just an adjustment period and your body will get used to the different sleep schedule before too long. In the meantime, make sure your windows are covered up if it is bright in your room. Maybe use a white noise machine if there is too much noise. I wouldn't start taking sleeping pills, because that could become a habit that is hard to break.

On my days off, I like to do hot yoga and Pilates. I feel like they help break up the gunk that builds up inside my body from being in the smoky club and holding my body in unnatural positions (on those heels!) It may be purely psychological, but I feel like it helps.

Also, when I do Pilates, I get one-on-one training. I like to do stuff that makes me use my body in a non-sexual way, that is geared towards MY pleasure and well-being, not a customer's. It makes me remember who I am, and that's good for me.

I don't smoke or drink very much when I'm not at work. i always kind of associate drinking with work, so it isn't that much fun. I like to read, write, cook, go to parks, and just kind of chill by myself.

I had trouble adjusting to the hours too... esp when school is in session because I work until 5 in the morning and my first class is at 12:30 but with time my body became used to it. Buuuttt... I still make sure to take naps after class... I try to eat well and drink lots of water...when my body is too sore to work I don't really push myself to go in.. i take the rest i need because we gotta remember that it's our body making the bread so we don't wanna abuse it.

The biggest thing I've done that's made me feel better is to STOP EATING FAST FOOD. The closest I've come to it is a Quiznos or Subway; I haven't eaten at a McDonald's or Wendy's or Taco Bell in maybe a year and a half, and the difference in how I feel is truly incredible. So much processed food isn't good for you; while you can certainly survive off of it, it doesn't do many good things for you. My boyfriend's a snob about organic produce at the grocery store, too, and that helps a little bit as well, though it's wicked expensive. And with the money you make you can certainly afford to be pickier. Also, going to the gym for cardio isn't really necessary, since working is like 8 hours of cardio anyways, but I find that going every once in awhile does make you feel more productive and better about yourself, and you always sleep better that way.

I also take a lot of time in bubble baths, reading books that make me a total geek, like Anne of Green Gables or Lord of the Rings. Lol, sometimes I even break out the American Girl books from when I was a little girl. Takes like 5 minutes, but it puts me into a lighthearted and carefree mood, just to kick back and give your mind a rest.

There's also a little afternoon tea place about 20 minutes from me, and I like to go with a book and curl up on a couch with cucumber sandwiches, and jasmine tea, and scones with cream and butter, and have a truly indulgent couple of hours. Little things like that always make me feel better.

I try and keep a "regular" sleep schedule. My shift is from 11 pm- 6am (ugh!) and I don't get home until about 7 am. I always set my alarm to wake up at 3 pm. Most of my day is gone, but at least I get a regular 8 hours of sleep!

Taking classes keeps my head straight as far as knowing where I am going. It is a daily reminder that I won't be doing this forever.

On a daily basis, I sleep 8 hours, take vitamins, drink a gallon of water and eat completely vegan. I also work out, take an adequate amount of time off, and avoid work when I'm "not in the mood". Keeping personal relationships and personal time as a priority rather than the club helps to keep me in a good place.

    Good luck!

For me it is spending time with my man, going to the spa together and alone, getting my nails done, taking weeks off at a time, cooking, reading books, doing some light traveling and yes exercising. I don't do the gym thing but I stretch a lot and lift weights at my house. As far as sleep goes I just go to sleep when I am tired and wake up when I'm done. No clocks at this house!

I've found that working out helps me sleep so much better. I used to stay awake 'till 8am because I couldn't sleep after work but if I work out, I can barely keep my eyes open when I get home. My nightly routene when I get home is to take a shower and put on lotion afterwards. Then I put on toe seperators (the ones you use when you get a pedicure). My trainer told me that it was really good for your feet and it feels great.
    I also:

    -Tan 3 times a week
-Get a massage whenever I need one
-Take vitamins and try not to eat too much junk food (But don't beat yourself up if you do! Sometimes you need a little comfort food!)
-Drink lots of water (especially if I'm drinking at work)
-See a pychotherapist once a week
-Listen to my body. If I've run myself ragged, I'll take a week off and recharge

I don't mean to pry but why do you see a therapist once a week is it strictly wok related or do you go for other issues? I ask because I'm in therapy but I only tell them bout my "regular" job. I have no problem with the idea of stripping but everyone else does so I tend to keep it to myself...just wondering if this is counterproductive to my therapy.

Honestly, I think not telling your therapist about stripping is counterproductive. I would think that hiding that aspect of your life from him/her is a strain, and what do you do when something happens at the club and you want to talk about it? I know it's hard to predict how a therapist is going to react, but I find that every time i've opened up to my therapist it's been a big relief. Anyway, I'm not a professional or anything, but those are my thoughts on it.

Therapists aren't supposed to judge. If s/he does, I'd find a new one! You should be able to be open to this person of all people! That's their job! If s/he couldn't handle a client being a stripper then I'd say he wasn't worth his salt.

It was a promise I made to myself when I started dancing to start seeing a therapist because I had had some previous issues and I wanted to make sure that I was dealing with them instead of bottling them up and ending up putting myself in situations I wouldn't normally let myself get into. I used an agency to find my therapist (someone intervues you and then sets you up with the therapist they think is best suited for you) and one of my stipulations was that the person had to be open-minded about what I do for a living. The last thing I needed was someone who tried to talk me out of dancing because they thought it was immoral or they were some extreme feminist or something. For myself, therapy is just another way to keep my mind healthy and to make sure that if I do get lonely or depressed I'm not escaping in drugs or alcohol (not that there's anything wrong with using these, it's just not something I think would be healthy for myself).
