Default My pole needs a fix

I have a steel (not stainless) pole that was painted. However, after many a gin spraying and wipe, most of the paint is gone and the bare metal is extremely slippery. Any ideas on how to fix this? I'd rather not repaint it as I would have to repaint about once every 3 months. Is there amyway to "rough up" the metal?
When it comes down to it, I'll let them think what they want. If they care enough to bother with what I do, then I'm already better then them.

Use a gentle sanding block, and lightly sand horizontally. That's what I did and it made it not only easy for me to climb, but I could spin better.
