Default Just started at the SPCA!

I had a blast! I have always worked with animals because of my dog sitting and dog walking and of course stealin the neighbors' dogs if I have a key to their house (they don't mind, heh.)
I did once work for a shelter, but it was a miserable place, a lot nicer now, but that was a few years ago and I no longer live there.
I started volunteering at the local SPCA today and was floored at how serious they are about training. I need to have 6 hours in before I even think about taking dog handling class and that includes cleaning their cages. I was able to clean and play with the cats and I swept the entire lower floor, but it was the puppers I was really keen about.
My goal this week is to finish out my 6 hours so that I can take the class next week. I know a few people who work there and a few of the volunteers are sweethearts.
Just wanted to share something fab that happened today. I knew I would have fun, but I was anxious (I had to drive my moped for the first time since my accident so I was very nervous) I really didn't know what to expect or how hands on I could get. But this really looks like something new and great to add to my week.
    Thanks for reading everyone!

That's so awesome! You're absolutely perfect for that job! How are you going to keep from bringing them all home?

Please keep us posted. I have thought about this once in awhile and am thinking as rewarding as it would be it would also be severely depressing.

I used to regularly "casual" volunteer for www.awlqld.com.au at one point. I went from the cat cuddling and dog walking to becoming a foster carer. The foster caring was hard. That stopped when I decided to adopt the mum from a "mum and kittens" I fostered.

Quite a few times I would get hooked on this kitten or that kitten but there was just something about that "mum" cat that I fostered that kept her in my mind (not to mention the fact I fostered her kittens for AGES!)... and 3 months later she still wasn't adopted.. still "in the system".. that.. yup. She is no longer "in the system".

I hope to be able to someday go back to the shelter to re-volunteer more regularly. It was just so so so so so rewarding.

Thanks Susan! You know I am an animal addict.
As for it being depressing, I work for a NO KILL shelter.. Not one animal has been euthanized since 2005 in my city. There are other regular shelters, but where I work, the critters are there until they are adopted.. I wanted to get my dog handling license so I can start fostering. My munchkins are jealous littler buggers when I dog sit so I think fostering would be perfect. A short stay that gets me my pupper fix and yet my own dogs aren't too upset.

I would love to foster dogs but I don't know if I could give them up. You should move out to Utah where Dog Town is. Have you ever seen that on the National Geographic channel? I could totally see you moving in there!

I haven't heard of it, but I'm sure that would be the place for me. We want another dog, but I figure that with fostering I can find one without worrying about the commitment, I had to give up a dog in the past since my girl dogs kept beating on him so I don't want to make that mistake again. I already fell in love with a cat, but I am pretty sure my own cat might beat him all on her own. He is classified as "x large" which just makes me grin, I think I woudl rename him X L. Heh. But my cat is an evil she devil when it comes to other cats. She may only be 5 pounds, but it's all fury.
Yeah, as with the SPCA, I think I have interested a few of the girls and they might actually join me in the volunteering. Wouldn't that be something?

I's so cool you really want to do this--and god knows it's a great thing to do!

But what's this about a moped accident?? I hope it wasn't bad. I hate those things, everyone in the Keys has them, but I don't trust them. I had three very nasty accidents on motorcycles and so finally backed off, but at least on a motorcycle you have the power to get out of the way of the imbecile about to hit you!

Good on you gypsy_girlchild, that training programme sounds fantastic, I'm jealous!

I worked at the SPCA for a year a couple of years back and now my schedule's changing I've started volunteering again. It's rewarding but you do have to be a certain kind of person to deal with the euthanasia aspect.
