Default Is all of this bruising normal?

    Hey Everyone,

I've been dancing a week, and it honestly looks like I've been badly beaten (a few customers have actually asked if "my boyfriend beats me" yes, my non-existent boyfriend).

My knees, back, booty & arms are just totally black & blue.
    Is this normal?
How long will it take to go away?
What can I do to ease the pain?

I have thigh-highs to cover my knees, but my backside just looks terrible when I get up close to customers.

I eat very healthfully, do yoga & cardio almost everyday, and take a daily supplement. I'm perfectly healthy and in shape-- so what's up with all of this bruising? Someone suggested more iron...?

Any advice would be wonderful. Thanks, guys!

Yes, iron is important to stop bruising. Since you are new to it, your body needs to adjust. I've been dancing for two years, and until this day, if I take off more than a week I bruise when I come back. I recommend using Arnica gel (Wholefoods) on the bruises to help speed up the healing. Some girlies take an arnica supplement, but I never have.

Your body will adapt! Just might take a few weeks.

^^^ Yes, lots of arnica. You can take the pills, but be sure to also use the arnica gel externally on bruises. Since you are new you may want to take something like Tylenol before you go into work to help cut down on bruising and pain.

I bruised my first 2 weeks of dancing... your body will adjust... and taking care of your health (iron, arnica as suggested above) will definitely help!

The bruising is typical, and your body will build up a tolerance. Arnica is a great addition to speed healing and ease pain.

There are some dietary things you can do, as well. Try eating more spinach and red meat to boost your iron. Supplements are controversial and Dr.s don't recommend iron for anyone not diagnosed with a deficiency. There is a link between iron supplements and heart disease and cancer. Iron promotes free radicals in the body, leading to chronic disease. It is much better to get your iron from food sources not only to avoid free radical damage but also it is more bio-absorbent.

There are also other dietary additions to heal and prevent bruises; Glutamine and Glucosamine work directly on the tissues to speed repair. Cottage cheese is high in Glutamine and pineapple is high in Glucosamine. Mix them together for a before bed snack and the body will utilize the nutrients to speed healing.

Don't like cottage cheese? There are sports drinks that contain both; Myoplex light and Muscle Milk both have glutamine and glucosamine in ready to drink shakes.

Since you are in Portland, you may consider using Sally Hansen Air Brush Legs to cover your bruises. Be warned, it will stain your white clothes and/or rub off on the customers. Give the makeup enough time to dry before getting dressed. It can be a little hard to wash off, too. I've found that bar soaps like Lever 2000 work the best for removing the makeup. Body washes just don't get all the makeup off, and could cause break-outs.

That's what happened to me when I first started dancing, too! Custies would ask me questions along similar lines...lol. I just increased my intake of vitamin C and gave it a couple of weeks and it got better. I also tanned a bit more (I'm white), so if you have that skin tone maybe tanning would work for you too!
    Good luck! =)

Bruising is very common. Since I teach pole rather than do it on stage bruises aren't an issue for me so I don't use anything on them - although I am sure boyfriend wishes I would since I think people think he's a rather violent man after getting a good look at me.

Arnica doesn't always take the bruising away but does help with the pain. Body make up works really well. Keep hydrated this is just overall good for your body but I've noticed much less bruising and a faster healing time. The same goes for multivitamins as well.

If you're practicing pole tricks - I tell my dancers (students) to set up a lesson for a couple of days before they are back on stage - this gives them time to not only learn new things but to let the bruising heal up and go away.

Another tip I have gotten from a student who dances it wear thigh highs if your legs are bruised or wear gaunlets/gloves if you arms are bruised - these items look sexy and can conceal parts of the body that you don't want to show.

If the tops of your feet are bruised wear colored and/or closed toe platforms.

As you get better at dancing, you'll become more aware of moves and positions that bruise you especially badly, and you'll be able to adjust them so you get banged up less. Every time I work at a new club, I have to find just the right angle for one particular stage trick I do, but for the first couple of nights before I find it, I still get back bruises.

Also, I'm another vote for Glucosamine. My knees gave out shortly after I started dancing, and I've been taking it ever since. Coupled with my body's adjustment to dancing, it's all great now!

Most dancers bruise in the beginning, however it sounds like more than normal on you. You may be doing things incorrectly. What I mean by that is there are several ways to avoid bruising. You are in Portland which means there are a lot of great teachers near you. You might want to take some lessons to avoid the massive bruising that you have been going through. JMO

ive done a combo of arnica and vitamin c and it really works. i used to bruise and be sore soooo bad. also not drinking at work really really helps, cuz you dont notice when youre banging yourself up as much when youre a little numb from liquor and all.
