    Default Alchohol affecting sleep

My sleeping seems to get worse and worse as I get older. I used to be able to drink and get my full 8 hours of sleep. I then got a little older and would wake up after 6 hours, but then pretty easily fall back to sleep in an hour or so. Now, I wake up, usually, after only 4 hours of sleep.

Does anyone else have this prob? Besides not drinking, is there anything else to help it?

I read that it's normal for alc to disturb your sleeping cycle, but it just keeps getting worse.

You are probably putting more and more stress on your body, with the drinking. How much do you drink? How many days a week, do you drink? Maybe you drink more than you used to.The problem can get worse with time, if you keep on abusing your body and don't give it a chance to recoup.
Mybe you should cut down or drink a lot of water in between drinks, also before you go to bed. Eat something with potassium, like a banana. It will help you hydrate your body. Any other stress, you might have in your life, can add up to the problem.
Also,Do you have a regular sleeping patern,? Do you go to bed at certain time everyday and wake up at about the same time. If you work nights, that can be disturbing your sleeping, too. It hapenned to me it messed up my biological clock complielly. I couldn't properly sleep for a year, after I stopped working nights.
On the other side, people need less sleep as they grow older, maybe a contributing factor, I don't know. Wish you all the best

Have you tried guzzling a huge thing of gatorade or smart water before bed?

It really helps your body hydrate itself.

I find when I drink I wake up due to a dehydrated headache or body aches.

If I drink gatorade/smartwater (like the whole bottle) then another bottle when I wake up I am fine.

One study showd the only way to prevent a hangover in the morning is drinking Gatorade right before you go to sleep. (Water does not work. However, they said RU 21 herbal remedy also works) I'm sure anything with electrolytes (Smartwater, powerade, etc) will work too.

I try not to drink at work. There was a week or so when I drank a drink or two each day, but I quickly put a stop to that so I wouldn't get into my old habits again. So now, I usually drink heavily one day a week, two max, but rarely that. I usually go out around 9 PM and drink until 1 at the latest. I probably have about the equivalent of 9 or 10 drinks during that time max (assumming that 1.5 oz is equivalent to one drink).

I actually used to drink more. I'd say that I averaged 6 or more (usually more) drinks per night, about 4 times a week.

Good pt, Zoe. I never thought of how the body needs less sleep as it gets older. Interesting.

GoLightly, I'll def try the gatorade thing next time.

Alcohol is a sedative - when you have been drinking you will find it easier to fall asleep and fall into a deep sleep. However once your body has finished metabolising the alcohol, probably about four hours later, the sedative affects wear off which is why you might be waking up.
