Default should I pay for it? will appreciate an opinion!

    this is the situation...

I share an apartment with a friend but my name is not on the lease or bills. It's all under her name.

A couple of days ago the electric company asked us a $400 deposit because of poor credit. Evidently we always pay the bill late and we have been cut off 3 times in the past 5 months that we've been living together so they do have a right to request an extra deposit. The thing is that I HAVE ALWAYS PAID EVERY SINGLE BILL AND RENT ON TIME! I never pay it on the due date I always pay it the day I receive the bill or at least 5 days in advance but my roommate always pays late!

every time we've been cut off she says she forgot to pay the bill and I always believed her because she's kinda clueless but i think she's always broke. anyway...

I don't think I should pay half of the deposit because 1. my name is not on the bill. and 2. I have ALWAYS paid the bill on time.

    do you guys agree?

or you think I should also pay the deposit?

Dont pay the deposit and get it turned on in YOUR name that way it wont be late and it wont get cut off. I Mean its that or pay HER bill off and never see that money again....its not like you can live without electricity.

ITA, also if your credit is good maybe they wont require a deposit.

I guess I could put it under my name but I'm not sure if I want to do that cuz if she's irresponsible when it's her credit the one that's being jeopardized then I don't want to risk mine too.

We had agreed on renting a house together but I'm not doing that anymore for the same reason. she's always late on her payments and I don't like that.

But you said she is always broke right? Well then she prolly wont be able to come up with the $400 bucks without you so your electric will get cut off. So basically you:

A- Pay half of the deposit

B- Put it in your name and assume responsibility

And really how much can an electric bill really be? I mean at most its what like $150 a month? Put in your name that way you control it and if she cant pay her half on time, cover her til she can. I know it sucks but you dont have a whole lotta options if you wanna ride out your lease

C: Dont do anything and get your electric shut off

    D: Move out

well...she's always broke in the sense that she makes tons of money (we work together)...
if I make $300 she'll make 500...if I make 500 she'll make 700... she's a hustler and a money maker but she has tons of bill and whenever she has some extra cash she'll go buy $200 jeans, $500 purses... etc...

so she can come up with the money herself but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being unfair.

Oh well thats a different story, FUCK HER then. I mean not like you can really do anything but an idea is, when she is bragging at work about her money hit her right then and there. "Oh yeah, you made $700? Then $50 for the electric bill will be small shit, can I get that so i can go pay it?"
Will front her out and she will not want to look bad.

Like they said, you have two choices: pay the deposit, leave it in her name and hope it doesn't get shut off again; OR turn it on in your name and chase her around for the money.

Your other option is: move out.

It's not easy having to deal with roommates but sometimes it takes a little while to get the kinks worked out.
    Good luck.

i have tryed the whole roomate thing before and its a headache. especially with other dancers. Get your own apt. or give her the money for the deposit and borrow her clothes. lolol......... I would opt for my own place though. maby even get a place next door to her so you guys can still hang out with eachother???? that is always your best bet so you wont be so lonely. strippers tend to be somewhat unreliable about a lot of things even if they are the nicest people. I make more money and stay a lot more sane if i keep them as friends and not as living partners......... good luck hun!!!

Thank you all for your help. We did talk and I told her I didn't think it was my responsibility to pay for it, I think she took it very well and that was it. But 2 days after, she told me she wanted to move out and we just put a 30 day notice in the leasing office. I don't know if it had anything to do with the talk we had but I must say I'm pretty excited to find a new place just for myself and everything is good now =0)

thank you all for your help !!!
