I use a japanese name as my stage name. I was wondering if it would be weird using japanese songs while I do my 2 song set. Would it be a turn on or turn off?

Personally I would love to see that, but using two of them in a row especially would work better in some clubs than others. In the redneck/biker type clubs, the neighborhood clubs, the slick corporate giant clubs with all the fucking rules, it might not work as well. Though it might not actually backfire per se, if they even allowed you to do it, the guys are liable to sit there like idiots and wonder what you are doing. But these types of clubs are not renowned for an appreciation of new or unusual cultural stimuli, to say the least.
I would probably do it, depending on what kind of Japanese songs you picked, but I have a lot more leeway than a lot of DJs, and also Key West has a lot of people from all over the world, so that sort of thing goes over a little more easily. I use foreign music if it is upbeat on the weekends, and if it is sexy/erotic at the beginning or end of the nights.
What kind of club are you in?
ETA--Somewhere in Music Mix there is a thread with exotic music recommendations, but I don't recall any Japanese songs being posted. I love Kitaro (spelling?) but it's been a while since I heard anything by him, and I am ashamed to say I never thought of using him, but now I am thanks to you...

Its a fairly small club in socal, the people that go there are pretty wealthy since the dances are pricey. The girls get to pick what songs to dance to, so I'm sure the DJ wouldnt care what I pick.
I was thinking with the right song it can be very exotic and appealing since its "different" than what other girls do. I've never seen it done either so I thought I can give it a shot. I'm going to look up kitaro and see how that is. I was thinking more of a japanese remix song. maybe Utada Hikaru or Ayumi Hamasaki or Namie Amuro.
Though it's not technically "foreign", I used to dance to Gogol Bordello a lot. I definitely got me some attention, if anything just to ask what it was I was dancing to.
Maybe some pseudo foreign music (Seatbelts maybe?) would help you too. Something recognizable, just not something that they expect to hear in a strip club nor what makes them think of a typical Western European girl.

I've thought about dancing to "alcohol" by Gogol Bordello.![]()

I dance to spanish music in missouri all the time. Those damn rednecks are like WTF but they tip like crazy. then they whisper to their buddies about there being too much "immigrant" music playing. I'm using "immigrant" as a euphemism, BTW. I could give a fuck though. Be yourself, but keep in mind your audience.

As for Japanese music it depends on what genre of music you like to dance to.
For rock/ Alternative I would reccomend Dir En Grey, Nightmare, Miyavi, and Gackt.
For R&B: m-flo
For pop: Ayumi Hamasaki, Koda Kumi, Mika Nakashima ( The Nana album), Misia.
Those are some artist just off the top of my head. PM me if you are interested in anymore.
You can listen to some of these artist music on itunes or due searches on google for mp3s. I got most of my music in Japan and from www.yesasia.com.

Alright I'm going to try it out. I just hope the girls dont think "wtf am i lapdancing to?" haha
firekitten, have u danced to japanese songs? how did it turn out? ill try some of those artists you suggested. are there any slow and sensual songs?
I've danced to foreign music (ukranian hip hop), and it turned heads in a not so positive way at first because russian customers assumed I didn't know the meaning of the song because of my look. But, after russian dancers told a few guys I also speak russian, they felt a lil stupid and tipped a few dollars the next time I danced to foreign music.
I say try the japanese song for your stage show. It can't turn out more weird than my situation![]()
for slow and sensual I would reccomend Fragrance by Gackt ( One of my Favs). for slow and sensual alot of Misia and Mika Nakashima earlier cds are good too. I had danced to a japanese song once in Japan and they manager told me to stick to American music. But it can work for you. Ayumi Hamasaki has alot of techno/trance remixes to her songs. That might be easier to get away with. Good Luck Sweetie ^_^
