    Default Song lengths?

Do DJs manipulate song lengths based on time of day, how many customers, etc? Today I was in and I swear all songs for a couple of hours were being cut off around 2 minutes. Other days, I swear they go on...and on...and on. Good for the customer, but I've had discussions with dancers about being annoyed at the DJ for it. Most days, they seem "normal" length.

Does it vary by DJ? Time? Something else? Why does it vary at all?

Two-for-one specials always seem to consist of shorter-than-normal songs, but I've never looked at it very closely.

All the clubs I've worked at cut the songs at 3:30 - 4:00 min.

Sometimes it varies by the clubs call on the length of the songs.

I've seen it cut to as low as 90 seconds. That was in a venue with way too many dancers. A good part of what little money they made came from collecting just before they did a stage spot. So there were always 2 - 3 girls collecting and a girl on stage. They faded the songs to get as fast a rotation as possible.

(I think a lot of the dancers didn't have work permits and that was one of the few places they could work without being asked for them).

Everywhere I've worked songs were 3:30 each. Many places shorten the 2-4-1s to 2 min each song.

yeah, only thing i'm familiar with is that during specials, songs tend to be shorter. so maybe at those certain times, the dances were discounted. or maybe not. i've been in clubs where dayshift songs are shorter than night shift songs.

it could be that you're dealing with different dj's .... MOST dj's at any strip club will keep the song right about at 3 to 3 and 1/2 minutes (like audrey said) cutting it at a "good point" closest to that time. the only exception i know of is that the 2-4-1 songs are always shorter. they're probably 2 minutes each. so, in reality the customer is getting about a 30 second longer dance than he normally would. i know that sounds underhanded, but i can't think of one club i've worked at or been to that doesn't do it.

At the club I worked at, we had $10 lap dances until 8pm. Normally they are $25.

So before 8pm, all the songs were 2 minutes long. After 8pm, they were 3 minutes in length. That's what the DJ told me, anyway.

I want to see TLC "Push It" cropped to just be *signature riff* "puuuu" and all of a sudden stop just to see the reactions, I think that would be the funniest example of over-clipping ever. But I'm easily amused.

The old DJ at the club I worked at was great about the songs. He let the songs play through their entirety. The new DJ is pissing off customers by cutting the songs short and talking way too much.

Yes to everything. Some DJ's will play full length songs, some cut after 3-3.5 mins. I can't tell you how many time I've been stuck dancing on stage to 3 led zeppelin songs in a row. That's like a 20+ minute stage set!!

At the beginning of the night they are 3-3.5 minutes, when it's about an hour left before closing they become about 2 minutes long, or even less than that. I always feel bad usually will do an additional 30 secs to a minute if a guy got 3+ dances already.

I haaaaaaaaate DJ's who don't crop the songs to a reasonable (3-3.5 min) length. Our weekday DJ totally pisses me off. I told him I like to dance to techno. He'll pop in a 10 minute trance song, and then go WALK AROUND THE CLUB, taking a little smoke break, chewing the fat with the house mom, eating a sandwich, fixing his hair in the mirror, etc. FOR THE DURATION OF THAT SONG. Then, he'll run back to the DJ booth, pop in ANOTHER 10 minute trance mix, and HANG OUT IN THE BACK FOR ANOTHER 10 FREAKING MINUTES. So by this point, I've been dancing for 20 minutes, and no one is tipping because the music is getting old and they're sick of seeing my sorry ass up there, doing the same routine over and over.

He used to do this every time I went up on stage. EVERY time. I mean it. Now I only dance to short punk tracks when he's working. Wh0oooo, Husker DU!

On any particular day, an hour or less, just enough to get my fix. But I'm a fairly regular regular who has been there at different times of day. This particular day, the songs seemed really clipped short. Probably just a different DJ.
