ok... so I'm going to be starting cosmetology school within the next year. I have a few options and I'm looking for some advice.

I know that Aveda Institute is a very good school, but it is also extremely expensive. Like 18,000. Also, they have a very strict absences policy. I was told that 10 absences and your out. i was also told that if you come in 5 minutes late you are marked absent.

I live in Detroit, and the school is in Royal Oak, which for me is about a 45 minute commute, no traffic. which worries me, because class starts at 830 and is tuesday thru saterday. It will be extremely hard for me to work.

My girlfriend told me that whatever I have to do, go to this school.

Now, there is the Paul Mitchell school. I believe it is like 12-13,000, but it is also about ten minutes from my house and I think they have part time programs. Even if they didn't, just the drive time would totally save my ass!

I think I should have at least half of my tuition saved up front, and I moved back in with my parents, so I don't have a lot of bills. I'm also filing for grants. But... is it realistic to think that I can do the Aveda program while working and commuting? is it worth it? I can't imagine getting up at six, driving to school, getting out at four thirty and then working. but if it means a better job, I could deal.

does anyone know anything about the Paul Mitchel schools? I'd really appreciate any info. I've heard some say they are great, and some say terrible.

This shit is stresssing me out! why is Aveda so expensive? AHHHH!!!!

Honestly, I'm not in the beauty industry, and I don't know much about Paul Mitchell schools. But I do know that just reading about the schedule you'd have to follow at the Aveda institute stressed me out.

But good luck with whatever you decide. I've always thought going to cosmetology school would be so cool.

i've thought of going to the aveda school in town, which makes it pretty convenient for me personally.

if the commute is that big a problem, maybe you should go to paul mitchell. but from what i can tell, aveda translates to some of the best money you can make once you start working. if that matters to you, maybe you should consider finding a place a bit closer to aveda.

paul mitchell and aveda are both great companies/programs. in your situation, i would go with paul mitchell for the convenience, affordability, and flexibility it offers you by being closer, cheaper, and possibly part time.

once you've graduated from cosmetology school, you'll probably start out at a paul mitchell salon, but you can always switch to an aveda salon later if you want.

see i have heard good and bad about both schools. I am in NC and we have both in my town...i have never been to either a A or PM school or salon, but i know people that have been to each...so i would say just pick whichever is gonna fit your schedule and needs the best...

besides, a lot of salons want you to still continue your training after you finish school...not sure if you are familiar with Tony and Guy, but they do this...so a employee there can take additional courses and workshops and raise their 'level' and in turn charge more for their services because they have more experience and skills. so i don't think it really makes a difference in schools, besides you've picked two good ones.

    good luck!

I went to Paul Mitchell. It's a great group of schools and the name is really well known in the cosmo industry. I would say just go to PM. It was a great experience for me.

Thanks everyone, I think I am going to do the Paul Mitchell. This way I won't end up hating cosmetology school.

The other cool thing about PM is that its like one mile from my roller blade path, and I'm obsessed with distance in line skating. I just bought my first pair of marathon blades.

    Thanks again!
