    Question confused strippah!

I'm sorry to be one of those dumb people that posts looking for help, but I've looked through the other posts here on DD and I can't find the answer. Now I'm just plain-out stressed about taxes etc.

I've been dancing for about six months, and I only work about once a week to pay for rent and groceries etc. In the time I've worked, I've probably made around $5-6K (I need to do some adding-up to be sure). Aside from this, I go to college and I have a job on campus, from which I earned about $1K in the last year.

Am I right in thinking that maybe I don't need to file my dancing earnings because I'm under the income threshhold? My taxes were deducted automatically from my on-campus job and the only other thing I need to file is my tuition loan.

Any advice? I really appreciate it!

This is from the IRS website. It says if you answer yes to any one of these you should probably file a return. I'd assume you'd fall under the "Were you self-employed with earnings of more than $400.00?" The $600 reporting threshold that Melonie is referring to, is for companies to report payments to subcontractors.

To determine if you need to file a Federal Income Tax return for 2008 answer the following questions:
Occasionally, individuals have one-time or infrequent financial transactions that may require them to file a Federal Income Tax return. Do any of the following examples apply to you?

    • Did you have Federal taxes withheld from your pension and wages for this tax year and wish to get a refund back?
    • Are you entitled to the Earned Income Tax Credit or did you receive Advance Earned Income Credit for this tax year?
    • Were you self-employed with earnings of more than $400.00?
    • Did you sell your home?
    • Will you owe any special tax on a qualified retirement plan (including an individual retirement account (IRA) or medical savings account (MSA)? You may owe tax if you:
      • Received an early distribution from a qualified plan
      • Made excess contributions to your IRA or MSA
      • Were born before July 1, 1937, and you did not take the minimum required distribution from your qualified retirement plan.
      • Received a distribution in the excess of $160,000 from a qualified retirement plan.

    • Will you owe social security and Medicare tax on tips you did not report to your employer?
    • Will you owe uncollected social security and Medicare or Railroad retirement (RRTA) tax on tips you reported to your employer?
    • Will you be subject to Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT)? (The tax law gives special treatment to some kinds of income and allows special deductions and credit for some kinds of expenses.)
    • Will you owe recapture tax?
    • Are you a church employee with income in wages of $108.28 or more from a church or qualified church-controlled organization that is exempt from employer social security or Medicare taxes?

Do one or more of the preceding situations apply to your filing requirements?

^^I think she is going to need some more specific definitions.

To the OP, yes, you should go thru the forms and file them. On your stripper income, make sure you have documentation of your relevant business expenses. You just may not much income if you do. But you will need to file.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

You may be owed a refund, if so file! The only way to find out is fill out the forms. It's free to use TurboTax online until you actually file. (In your situation, it may be free anyway.) You can go all the way to the end of the program and figure out if you need to pay, or get a refund before filing. So, just do it. Also, you can download the paper forms from the IRS website and hand fill them out. It's almost as easy, just a little slower.

6 k is enough to pay taxes on. I don't think you'll have to pay much. Call a tax pro and just ask and then HIRE the tax person to guide you through this. Most tax pros charge $60-$120 or so depending on how complex your return is and it's money well spent.
