Boots are good. They help you grip the pole and protect you from bruising. i'd post a link to a good example, but im lazy.

Were they regular stripper shoes? If so then they're ok. Boots will definitely hep you grip better but you can do pole work in pretty much any shoe, even barefoot.
I find it's safer to learn barefoot then use your shoes once you are good with the trick. in the case of climbing the pole though you will want shoes or boots because the tops of your feet get bruised and beat up.
If you inverting (upside down) better to start with barfeet.
As long as you are comfortable with the shoe/boot and the heel you can shouldn' have a problem. Who said your shoes were wrong? Did they say why?
Any type of stripper shoes will work when climbing the pole. What's more important is the way you are gripping the pole with your legs while climbing. The shoes will help you stick, but you need to grip the pole between your legs really tightly when climbing, it makes it a lot easier. When I first started learning I was mostly pulling myself up with my arms and using the grip from my shoes, but not gripping much with the legs. By the time I got to the top I was exhausted!
Hope that input helped. As long as your shoes have that PVC they are perfect for climbing, it all just depends on what style you're most comfortable with wearing while on the pole.
Plus, just climbing the pole is always REALLY hard when you're first starting. It's something that looks SO simple, yet ends up bruising the insides of your thighs, tops of your feet, etc. I remember feeling soooo lame when I first started trying to do this. I'd slide off of the pole immediately, whereas the other girls could sit at the top of the pole for hours without breaking a sweat. This is definitely something that takes time (possibly months!) for your body to adjust to it and learn what muscles to use.
And like other posters said, your shoes don't really matter unless you're doing some seriously intense moves. A normal shoe that covers the very top of your foot will be sufficient.
