Default Anyone else obsessed with natural/treehugger body care?

As I mentioned before in another thread, I used the MoonCup from The Keeper because it's enviromentally friendly, safer than all those chemicals in tampons, which also screw with your natural vaginal "homeostasis" if you will, and I also find it to be ALOT better at preventing leaks and such.

But aside from just my Moonie, I'm also hugely obsessed with my body care. I've switched from the usual stuff I use to all organic lavender shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotions, skin care, everything. The last thing to go is my perfume, but I can't bare to switch just yet. I'm thinking maybe organic lavender oil mixed with just a tiny bit of pheremones?
I also use unprocessed (meaning no chemicals) sea sponges for bathing and cleaning my face. I'm experimenting currently with organic toothsoap also. That's right, toothSOAP, not paste, and I can say I truly prefer it. My teeth feel squeaky clean, not like there's that little film that comes with toothpaste.

Anyone else as obsessed with being all-natual or enviromentally friendly? If so, offer up your regimen!

I wouldn't say I'm 'obsessed' but I do like to try as many environmentally/body friendly products as I can...Trader Joe's has some really great organic body care stuff for some very reasonable prices (better than at the natural foods places). Since you like lavender, you might want to try the lavender sea salt scrub...makes your skin soooooo soft!

As for the menstrual stuff, I've never had much luck with cups, but I would like to start using glad rags. Have you ever used those in addition to the cups?

I'm obsessed with ShiKai Yuzu shower gel. I LOVE the way it smells!!! I'm going to try more of their products.

During my experimentation with different types of menstrual protection, I did try the cotton lined "light day" panties, but those didn't last long. It just felt kinda odd to me to use during the actual bleeding. I might order another couple pairs in the near future though, to use on my 6th and 7th days when it's a bit impractical to use my Moonie.
I've never used the actual Glad Rags because I don't like pads at all. I always feel like I'm wearing a diaper. But of the two cups I've used (The Keeper's MoonCup and Instead's SoftCup), I experienced leakage with the Instead and only some with the MoonCup when I was first learning to use it and it didn't unfold properly when I placed it. Since I figured it out, I've never needed back up, even during long drives on my heaviest days.
I've heard Glad Rags are pretty good though and some friends claim that they feel better than traditional pads, so give it a try and report back to us?

I'm thinking of getting into some more homeopathic therapies (on top of my at-home herbal remedies) like ear candling, neti and, dare I say it, once-weekly enemas. I've heard rave reviews about the regimen but have never used ear candles or a neti pot. The idea of the enema bit doesn't phase me much since I'm neutral to the whole ass-douching thing (it just feels weird to me, is all, no kinky feeling or horror story from childhood). What has me a little hesitant though is what my boyfriend's reaction would be when the UPS man drops off a package with one of those little rubber bottles in it. I guess we'll just see when the time comes, won't we?

PS- Anyone who has thought of using a MoonCup, here's a hint: when you first recieve it, carefully poke through the already existing airholes with a needle. I found about a third of the holes in mine to be only about half as wide as they should be and another one or two holes that were perforated but still had silicone blocking them. Repeat again at the end of each cycle, AFTER cleaning of course, especially if you boil it.

    Also, I get my products at VitaCost.com, GladRags.com, NaturalBathAndBodyShop.com and AWildSoapBar.com.

I am quite obsessed with using only truely natural products. I use Jojoba oil on my face and coconut oil on my body. I use soap/shampoo made by a lady who lives in my town who grows her own herbs and makes soap with them. I use jojoba oil as my hair conditioner.

My concern for this summer is: what will I use as a natural sunscreen? Any suggestions?

I thanked you for this because we all need to support local farmers and businesses, no matter how small. By doing so, we get truly the freshest products, save oil/gasoline by reducing the distance of delivery and help their businesses to grow, when we're actually driving small farmers/businesses into the ground by buying from super stores that consume FAR too much energy and sell pesticide covered, genetically modified food and herbs. I actually buy my eggs from a nice lady who lives up the street and honey from a bee farm located on the next block (both are chemical and hormone free). I get the added benefit of exercise by riding my bike while I help the enviroment lol.

Anyways, for summer, I'd suggest this one by Burt's Bees- http://www.burtsbees.com/webapp/wcs/...0001&langId=-1
I use their shimmers and balms alot, plus I've tried other stuff (switched because I prefer my lavender lol) so trust me when I say it's an awesome brand. I'm sure there's alot more out there if you look, but this is the only one I have experience with.

Coming out of lurkdom here. I've become more interested in the whole organcics, natural body care, etc. especially since the birth of my son in 2007. Nothing like those mama-bear hormones to make you start re-examining everything you do

I've gotten a lot of info on naturopathy on mothering.com and thebabywearer.com. Very mama-centric websites, but tons of good info for everyday life including healthy cooking, non-toxic and homemade cleaning products, etc.

Some things I've discovered: the Diva cup, mama (cloth) pads. FTR, I've always been very anti-pad because of the discomfort and overall ickiness, but seriously- cloth pads ROCK! I will never put paper/plastic near my girly bits again . The healing powers of tee tree oil is amazing, and the natural anti-bacterial properties of grapefruit seed extract is useful in so many ways.

A lot of products I use can be found at
The healing salve (under Natural Healing) is a miracle product.

    Thank You for this thread!!!

I think its great to see girls getting interested in Natural Beauty and Health care.
I am Vegan, stick to all organic products (except makeup unfortunately) and use 100% organic cotton tampons.............

I love Jason products- The apricot scrubble, body washes, shampoos and conditioners are awsome and they also have a mango butter for extra dry skin that is out of this world........

Aztec Secret Face Clay - you mix it with apple cider vinegar (it comes dry) and it really works o well to clean out your pores and get the circulation back in your skin. i put it all over my body as a little bit goes a long way (one ten dollar product will last you months cus you buy the clay and mix it yourself)

Dr. Singha's Mustard Bath - this one is a bit hard to find but can be ordered online for cheap. This guy is actually an old friend of mine that was a naturopath/osteopath. Mustard seed works to improve circulation and eliminate toxins from the blood. It also has essential oils in it. The company makes salves for sore muscles/injuries as well.

Epsom salt baths- great for sore muscles.

Blissful Botanicals- I dont know if she will ship to you but this company is amazing. All the products are handcrafted by a small mother/daughter company in CT. The mother is one of the developers for Traditional Medicinal teas. They use all organic herbs (often growing and making the extracts from hand) and carry a great line of baby products as well.

Via Viente- I personally think its one of the best energy juices on the market. Its not as widely pushed/advertised as the Goji, Xango, or Mona Vie but was recommended to me by a highly coveted natural doctor. Word to the wise on these juices (that run about 50 bucks a bottle)- if they are pushing a big marketing scheme on you (aka your gunna get rich) and use high pressure sales tactics to get you to sign up, they are not even the best product available. The better product speaks for itself and doesnt need to act as a used car salesman to get you to buy. I hate to call it out but Mona Vie is known for this and i stay away from it, not to mention one of their products contains shellfish???? Weird- no thanks.

Homeade beauty products- lets face it, a lot of these new "natural" products are pretty much a rip off if you really look into it. Last year i experimented with making my own skin treatments and found them to work just as good if not better than the stuff costing me hundreds of dollars.

homeade scrub: brown sugar, lemon juice and olive oil (or coconut oil)

homeade facial: fresh papaya mashed and packed onto skin / fresh avocado mashed and packed onto skin / sliced cucumbers over eyes / plain honey(makes skin soooo soft) applied as a mask

homeade foot softener: soak feet in epsom salts and then lather up in lotion followed by wrapping a plastic bag around them with an elastic and sleeping for the night

That said- if you got it to spend and you want really awsome skin products:

Dr. Haushka, Zia, Jurlique, Better Botanicals, and Desert Essence (zomg the BEST facial cleansing pads!)

My final natural health tip is this one: Tea Tree oil for skin problems (aka zits, bites, itchy stuff)

Please be careful doing enemas sweetheart!!! I have a very very good natural doctor and he recommends colonics but not excessive (no more than once or twice TOPS a year) and then encourages people to not do them anymore if its not completely necessary.

There are many reasons for this: 1. Flora- by flushing your colon you lose natual flora that lives
in your digestive system and keeps it healthy. Its advisable to replenish it regularly and DEFINATELY replenish it after having a colon flush. By Flora i mean Acidopholis and Bifidus. They must be purchased REFRIDGERATED as well. The product is a living bacteria (healthy bacteria) and has to be cold to stay fresh. Consistently flushing the colon out with water (into your ass) can lead to a dangerous imbalance in the digestive system which will lead to yeast overgrowth and possible urinary tract problems. Instead, try eating prunes or taking an occasional natural digestive/stool softener. Inducing waste to come out of the body can be very UNHEALTHY if done in EXCESS. It weakens the immune system, slows the bodies natural elimination process, and eventually leads to health problems (aka yeast infections, weakened kidneys, constipation).

One yogic trick for elimination is to drink a two liter bottle of water every morning. Or even drink up a glass of water with 10 emergency-C sashets mixed in. You will be amazed at how this simple process works so well.

    Some really good stuff here!

I review for a popular online beauty-products/makeup site and receive a lot of products to try:THE most effective and amazing organic product I have ever tried in the past 2 years is their Detox Face mask:

    http://www.organicapoteke.com/

It leaves your skin GLOWING and AMAZING and it's reasonable.

Now her things are tougher to come by,she only opens in small doses as she makes everything by hand in small batches but her skin care/products are all natural and again, unbeliable, she is worth watching and then stalking to order if need be when she has an opening!
No one puts more care and experience into their products!:

Default Re: Anyone else obsessed with natural/treehugger body care?

lol, I already SWEAR by warm epsom baths when I'm sore! I also use a solution for compresses when I get a good bruise or twist my ankle worse than usual. From time to time, I drink a little when I'm (we're all women here, so we all know the feeling) bloated or constipated. Hell, I even used it as a cheap, natural fertilizer when I tended a rose bush while we lived on the other side of town.
For those with new piercings or planning to get one (I just got my belly button redone and was lucky enough to have it done by a fellow Wiccan) try checking with your piercer about sea salt. The place I went to in the next county gave me my first bag with the piercing and I'm going back for a refill next time I can get out that way. I haven't met anyone who rejected a piercing while doing a sea salt aftercare solution and I'm happy knowing that I'm healing properly while using something NATURAL.

I'll definitely look into the masks and mustard bath at least though. The one thing my products don't offer is a good mask or actual soak. It'd be real nice to get me some.
I usually use some lavender oil on my bites, blemishes, etc, and it works pretty good but I've given alot of thought to try tea tree oil instead. I guess I'll just get a small bottle with my next lavender order and give it a try?

As for the enemas, I'll definitely look a little more into it and do some talking with my GP about it before I move. After all, it kinda defeats the point if I'm actually damaging my decent health in the attempt!

So, just to put it out there to anyone else who's thinking of trying homeopathic/herbal/natural remedies, I kinda need to put it out there while it's on my mind- Use a little common sense with it too. The point of these therapies is to prevent future health issues and to HELP (have to say it that way since it's illegal to claim that it does) treat existing problems, but not every therapy is right for every person. While allergies are reduced, they're not eliminated. Using the wrong temperature in a neti or enema can damage your internal tissues. You can get ash or wax in your ear cavity or even puncture your ear drum if you use an ear candle improperly. Certain herbs and extracts can irritate or damage your skin. Some therapies can even be totally illegal in your city/state/country.

CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR OR DERMATOLOGIST AND BE SAFE IN HEALING! xoxo

I love, love, love this thread.

I love using all natural products as well...

I dry skin brush my whole body 2-3x per week.

I use coconut oil as a moisturizer every day after my shower.

I make a scrub using any combination I have lying around of baking soda or celtic sea salt combined with honey or agave and olive oil or coconut oil.

For a home facial, I LOVE using a combo of mashed up ripe strawberries and bananas. The acids in the fruit exfoliate and leave my skin glowing.

For acne scars (used to be a picker, no longer have any pimples whatsoever, thank you clean vegan diet!) I used lemon juice topically before bed a few nights a week. Worked wonders.

I use a skin brush that I bought at Whole Foods.

Here's an awesome site on why and how to do it, there is a picture of a brush similar to mine about halfway down the page:

You know, I used to have one of them brushes and used it to scrub my back! I suppose I'd be set if I still had the bugger, but time wreaks havoc on all good things, especially when they're as old as that poor thing was. They're not hard to find at all, at least not a nylon one, so I suppose I can look around town since I finally KILLmaxed my PayPal balance the other day on some Hashmi Kajal (another thing all nature lovers might try in cosmetics. Hashmi is natural and has been made that way for over 200 years, but unfortunately made in India though and hard to get the AUTHENTIC in the states. Worth the search though- Hashmi Kajal does NOT use lead!)

Another topic worth mentioning in this thread- detoxing! Anyone else done it? I'm not talking fasting or liquid diets (no offense to anyone who does either, but the idea of nothing but liquids makes me blanch, and there's NO WAY I'm attempting a fast. Chances of going too far with it are just too high, since I'm a recovered bulimic and anorexic) but actual detoxes, where you eat only fruits, veggies and simple grains?
I'm debating a 1 to 2 week detox that I found. My mom liked the sound of it since it reinforces the sparse diet with extra supplements, so I'm pretty on board for it. How long I'll do it, I'm not really sure on though. I guess we'll see as the time draws closer. I'm thinking of doing it the week or two preceeding my move, so I can start over with a fresh diet when I get there.

The best regular detox treatment that i find works wonders (besides diet) is the russian spa. I have only seen really authentic ones in New York and Miami such as the russian and turkish bath house on 10th st (nyc) and the Standard spa (my favorite) or Nirvana in miami. The practice of going in a sweat lodge, hammam or sauna/steam room is an ancient healing art. American Indian shamans and medicine men all over the world use similar techniques to aid in the body's elimination/detoxification process.

The idea is that by sweating we are allowing toxins to exit the body via sweat glands and skin. The russian spas traditionally also have a cold water plunge that served to squeeze the blood vessels. Going from hot to cold opens and closes the blood vessels so that toxins are squeezed out and released via the sweat process. The heat also produces thirst so its easy to chug down a half gallon of water or more -also flushing out the body.

I honestly swear by this detox technique and feel lost without it. Even the healthiest dancers are exposed to all kinds of toxic stuff in the club - be it dirty environment, energies, alcohol or cigarette smoke. Being able to do this stuff has helped me on so many occasions.

If you cant get to a real russian bath/ hammam then just go to a good sauna. Make sure it gets really hot and allow yourself to seriously sweat and breath in there. Follow it by an ice cold (i mean ICE cold) shower. Its great for sore muscles, softening the skin, and opening up the lungs. It also releases toxins that are otherwise building up in your internal organs and muscle tissue.

Having a nice juice also helps!! Celery, cucumber is my favorite. It boosts up immunity and helps breathing. Grape and apple juices are also great liver detoxifiers..............

When I mentioned detox, I did mean in the diet sense. However, the particular regimen I'm looking into includes upping my exercise (from 30 minutes to an hour of cardio daily, plus trying yoga- I'm thinking ashtanga, since it also improves circulation, core temperature [I'm very sensitive to temperature and this could help with that], endurance and muscle strength), trying natural laxatives teas in the case of irregularity, avoiding smoking and, if possible, do some steam/sauna detox too. Lucky for me, I have a mist function on my shower head that allows for steaming! lol

Once I have a chance to get a juicer though, I'm thinking cucumber (help me improve after 6 years of smoking), grape for liver and cranberry for kidney?

Lets not forget my beloved blackberry wine! Think general benefits of a glass of alcohol each day, plus the antioxidants of a dark berry. I guess we'll just have to see, huh? Oh, and I'm thinking of trying a Goat's Rue and Fenugreek supplement. I swear, the combo is like a miracle or something. Check it out when you have a chance!

If you are looking for juicers the best one out there is the Omega. Also comes with a blank screen which I use to make flours out of pretty much anything (quinoa, oats, flax seeds!).

Wheatgrass is another great way to detox. Make sure that you are juicing it and drinking it immediately. If it sits for more than a few minutes or is taken in any other form it is pretty much worthless. Wheatgrass is the closest thing in molecular structure to our own blood- pretty awesome stuff.

Haven't done the steam/sauna thing in forever but will do!! Thanks.

As far as the lemon for scars goes- just squeeze a bit of juice into a glass, dip a q tip in and apply to scars OR any active pimples. Some say that lemon acts as a bleaching agent to fade them- this isn't true. It actually works because it exfoliates your skin so well. I've also tried using Mederma (onion extract) but didn't use it religiously and didn't notice results.

I usually get Wild Vines, since it's pretty cheap. Just about any liquor store or alcohol selling grocery store sells at least one brand in blackberry.

But oh noes! To those who haven't heard, daily alcohol consumption (they monitered a "no drinkers", one drink and two drink groups) increases cancer rates in women! It wasn't a SIGNIFICANT increase of course, but a documented one of about 3% in one and like 7% in two drinks I think they said. All things considered though, controlled alcohol consumption DOES decrease cardiovascular problems, which is the leading cause of death in women. So my opinion is that the slightly higher risk of cancer is highly outweighed by the benefits of a healthier heart.

But it is in the best interest to be INFORMED and come to your own conclusions, so I had to put it out there.

I love to eat kitchari for a healthy way to detox.

This is a recipe for mung dal kitchari which balances all three doshas. It is particularly beneficial for the stomach, lungs, liver, and large intestine. In Traditional Chinese Medicine mung beans are also revered for their detoxification properties.

    Kitchari Recipe

    Serves 4-5

1 cup yellow mung dal (split or whole)
    1 cup basmati rice
1 inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and chopped fine
    2 tablespoons shredded, unsweetened coconut
1 small handful fresh cilantro leaves
    1/2 cup water
    3 tablespoons ghee (purified butter)
1 1/2 inch piece of cinnamon bark
    5 whole cloves
    4-5 crushed cardamom pods
    10 black peppercorns
    3 bay leaves
    1/4 teaspoon turmeric
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    6 cups water

Wash the mung dal and rice until water is clear. Soaking the dal for a few hours or overnight helps with digestibility.

In a blender, put the ginger, coconut, cilantro and 1/2 cup water and blend until liquefied.

Heat a large saucepan on medium heat and add the ghee, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, peppercorns and bay leaves. Stir for a moment until fragrant. Add the blended items to the spices, then the turmeric and salt. Stir until lightly browned.

Stir in the mung dal and rice and mix very well.

Pour in the 6 cups of water, cover and bring to a boil. Let boil for 5 minutes, then turn down the heat to very low and cook, lightly covered, until the dal and rice are soft, about 25-30 minutes if mung beans are split, and 1 hour if whole. Add water if needed.

oh I'm so glad I found this thread!
I'm just getting into organic/natural bodycare!
    So far, I have attempted:
    - the OCM (oil cleansing method) with a few different oils. I have broken out a TON, but apparently that's just my skin "purging"
    - putting a tiny bit of coconut oil on as a moisturizer at night
    - rubbing castor oil on my lashes to make them strong and thick
    - brushing my teeth with baking soda - it gets them so very white and squeaky clean!
    - shaving with olive oil. BEST. THING. EVAR. i have never had one cut, no need to moisturize after, it exfoliates really really well (your razor will be covered in icky dead skin after a few swipes) and it is the closest shave i have ever had!
    - condition hair with coconut oil. i heard somewhere that it is the only thing that can actually repair your hair, but I have no citation

i also found this website. it is shocking what some companies put in their products!!
