    Dizzy Knees going out

I've been dancing for about 8 months now, but I'm still having problems with my knees. If I do about 20 minutes straight of lapdancing my knees have a chance of going out. And I'm serious when I say that, once I was walking back down the stairs after a series of LDs (Lapdance area is second floor), and my knees completely gave out as I was going down the stairs Thank god I had the rail.

Is there something to help this? I know I need more endurance obviously, but I'm worried about what to do until then. I think I became lazy with my dancing for awhile because the past week I decided to actually dance my knees feel like they could go out again at any moment. It's actually pretty scary.

Are they really sore or tender? Have you talked to the doctor about this? Many dancers have to get their knees drained from fluid build-up. I'm wondering if that might be part of your problem?

Not at night...that's when the stars have rather better things to do. They're coming out, shining, that sort of thing.

^^ That sounds horrible. Yeah they are really sore and tender, to the touch even. They don't appear swollen, though.

If they are tender it's really worth having the doctor take a look. Some dancers have to get their knees drained once, others have to do it every few months, and the lucky ones never have to do it. You might want to try staying off of your knees on stage for a week and see if that helps.

Also: I take glucosamine, for my joint health in general. I never wore high heels before I started dancing, and when I did, after the first two weeks, I literally fell getting out of bed because my knees gave. I talked to a pharmacist, and he recommended that, plus a pair of shorter high heels for everyday wear, to lessen the shock on my body of going between 6-inch heels and flats.

Also, try to stay away from what I call doing "stupid stuff" to your knees. Back when I was first dancing, I'd do shit that I knew looked good, but was doing unnecessary damage to my knees. For example, I'd push really hard on the celing with my hands, which would emphasize muscle definition, but would put a ton of pressure on my knees. Or I'd do a lot of rocking back and forth on my knees onstage. Floor work can cause tons of knee problems (obviously), so could you edit your floor moves to include less stuff where you're on your knees? Sometimes wearing thigh-high socks helps me with this, as I tend to do more sliding and less landing this way.

Secondly, do you work in a high contact club? I once gave my DJ a full-contact dance as a joke (I work at a no-contact club), and I was absolutely floored by the amount of knee and thigh strength it took to maintain that contact. I don't see how some ladies do it--and I consider myself a muscular chick! So if you're doing anything like that, then try to change the movement up a bit to put less strain on your joints.

With my knees, I find that prevention is more effective than diagnosing. Strippers have knee problems. It's one of the things you have to accept with the job. You can only do so much to help this. Take glucosamine/chondroitin, stretch before going onstage, minimize crazy floor work/LD stuff involving your knees, etc. My knees creak and make insane noises, but I have them stabilized with what I'm doing now. I'm sure I'll be paying for this when I'm 60....

^^ Yeah I noticed it's always after a long contact dance that they hurt like hell. Especially if the guy wants me to grind for 20 minutes straight it's freakin' ridiculous. Unless a guy specifically requests it I don't like grinding. My knees have been doing better since I stopped most of the floor work and haven't had any requests for grinding.

^^ Wow. I hear you on the grinding. My god. You have to like use your knees to push back into the guy and then also alternate pressure points (using your knees). I had nooo fuckin idea how much effort a contact dance took. Respect!!!
