Thumbs down my kitten needs weightwatchers!

I had my cats at the vet recently for their annual check-up, and the 2yr old one is apparently overweight. He is nearly 13lbs while my other cat is 9lbs

I've been looking online for ways to tone him down, but I can't find anything of much use, especially when any changes I make will affect the other cat too. I can't afford special "diet" food and he seems to exercise plenty already. Apparently cats get overweight by eating too much dry food, when wet food is better for them, so I've been giving them more cans/less dry food.... they don't seem to like it though I feel bad for him and I don't know how to fix it.

Put more protein in his diet and stop free feeding if that is what you do, or cut down on how much dry food you put out. Look online, there are plenty of recipes for making your own cat food at home using chicken, fish and even beef. The reason the dry food is often so bad is because the main ingredient in most is corn... which is carbs that convert to sugar and then fat. If you don't fix the problem now you kitty could end up with diabetes and you'll have to give him shots, which also means a high risk of other problems like liver failure. Nip the problem now while it's easy to fix!

Another option for dry food is Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul. Most feed stores will carry it. Here's a link online:

That's crazy...I always thought it was wet food that makes them fat? I only feed my boy dry food, and he is a lean mean kitteh machine. But he is also a very active indoor cat, and I just feed him when he "asks" for it. I have a relatively small food bowl, too, so that may be a part of it.

Have you tried using a laser pointer for play time? Those things are guaranteed to get my kitteh up and moving and he gets all sorts of exercise from it.

I know, Jinx, my black cat loves the laser pointer thingy. He will chase it like crazy whenever he sees it. Try it out on your cat, or get him/her some new toys. Those might help with his fitness. That and feeding your cat less might also help too.

Some cats just aren't cut out for all day access to all the food they want. I have four, and only one of them needs to be on a carefully controlled diet. He's also too fat to get to a lot of places the other cats can get to, so I feed them seperately.

My fatty gets properly measured portions twice a day, and the others have access to all the food they want, but they have to work a little to get to it.

He's also been a little better since we brought home a hyperactive kitten to chase him around LOL

I give my big kitteh this new food called Nutro. They have a weight control food for cats. They make dog and cat food. It is all natural and really good for them and works with my cats digestive system great. He is 7 now and this food is amazing. He loves it and is at a proper healthy weight for his breed. I suggest trying it.
