Default Strained back muscle (right side) Difficulty breathing

I have muscle pain on right side of my back and have difficulty breathing, I can't seem to catch a deep breath. When I do try, it feels like knifes are stabbing me in mid right section of my back.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
    Know of causes, solutions?

Please and thank you.........this is very strange and scary.

Certainly go to a doctor or physical therapist to get checked out.

Sounds to me that you strained one of your intercostal muscles that lies within your rib cage. When you breath your rib cage naturally expands and contracts. When you pull a rib muscle breathing can be painful. If it is a muscle strain then you can try rest and use a heat pad to promote blood flow.

Any idea how you did it? Are you coughing? You should still go to a doctor to confirm that you don't have more serious lung issues.
If you can't win. Make the fellow in front of you break the record.

Do you remember what you were doing when it happened? It could be a strained muscle or less likely a fractured rib. Unless the rib goes into the lung (very rare) they cant usually see it on xray or do anything to fix it, it just goes away on its own.

    Good luck!

My sister complained about a pain in her back that made it hard to breath... Against everyones recommendation to wait it out and see if it would feel better, she went to the ER. Turns out she had a blood clot in her lung. They told her that if she would have waited 6 more hours she probably would have died. She was 19 at the time- SCARY!

Go to the doctor- it's probably nothing, but better safe than sorry.

    Feel better

    ^^^ That's scary.

If it hurts to take a deep breath, hurts when you put pressure on that area, and hurts when you move certain ways you probably fractured a rib. I slipped & fell against the edge of a table and fractured a rib a couple years ago. I couldn't wear a bra for over a month cause the underwire pressed against the injured rib. Deep breaths gave me a stabbing pain. It sucked.

Anything that causes difficulty breathing should be assessed by a doctor sooner rather than later. More than likely, it's either a fractured rib or a strained intercostal muscle (I've been though a few rounds of both), but it could be more serious.

If it is a fracture or a strained muscle, rest, ice packs, and some over the counter anti-inflammatories will be your best friends until it heals (if it's a fracture, ask your doctor or pharmacist about the anti-inflammatories - recent studies have shown a number of them to be detrimental to bone healing, but I can't remember which ones off the top of my head)

This happened to me once. I went to a chiropractor who said I "popped" a rib and he popped it back. It still hurt like a bitch though, so I went to a bodywork specialist who did massage therapy and acupressure on my back and the pain subsided.

To prevent this kind of stuff in the future, you should consider yoga. Not only does it stretch your muscles but if done properly it can help to align your spine and increase the quality of your breathing. Hope you feel better!

Sorry that happened to you, I had that last year, it SUCKS!

Honestly it's probably a muscle pull if you didn't hear it actually make a noise and then felt pain. I popped onto your myspace and it says you're in Michigan, if you're in MY PART of Michigan give me a look. I'll give you $33/hr. and I could probably work on it and get rid of it, there are LOTS MORE complicated cases I've had than that and it's gotten better.
