    Default Help my skin!

Oh beautiful women of SW.... i need your wisdom....

I need a good foundation. Something inexpensive but stays put all day.
I've been using Covergirl forever now and lately i've noticed by the end of the day i look like a oil painting (aka disappears in some areas and clumps others). I have combination skin (oily/dry). I've tried putting moisterizer on my face before foundation only for it to be even more oily but no dry clumps. So im giving up on Covergirl.
    Any suggestions?

    Also...
I need a good acne medication. I've tried many in my days since i was teen (nothing fancy just drugstore stuff). I dont really have bad acne. I just have really clogged pores, black heads and those tiny pimples that you can only see really close (they drive me nuts!). Doesnt help i pick at them. But if i can find something that would work i would cut down on it.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks ladies.

Use only OIL FREE foundation and

Exfoliate with baking soda! I do it every day and follow with a good mosturizer. I use pure raw shea butter. Also doing salicylic acid peels will get rid of black heads

I've been using Neutrogena's SkinClearing oil-free makeup with salicyclic acid. My skin loves it! It's a liquid foundation that I smooth on with a triangle makeup sponge. It looks very natural and doesn't clog my pores at all...

+1 on mineral foundation. I use Everyday Minerals. I find that it goes on better than BareMinerals and has a wider array of colors.

I also use DDF Brightening cleanser which can be bought at Sephora or Sephora.com. Prevents acne and fades any acne scars you may have from picking.

Yeah, I recommend using BareMinerals. It makes your skin look beautiful, and it's good for your skin too.

And I hear witch hazel is good for your skin. It's gentle enough.

I always was curious about "mineral" stuff but felt that the whole "powder" thing wouldnt cover enough. Im so use to liquid medium coverage. But i know you all rave about it. Does it really cover well? I picture a power just not having the "staying power" or cover. Maybe im just confused....If someone could throw me some info i'd be super happy.

Im looking at "Everyday Minerals" website and im a little overwhelmed. Whats should i be looking into getting???

Thanks to all that did respond. <3

Oh and has anyone ever used that Neutragina kit they always advertise on tv?? Or there SkinID?
I wont go down the Proactive route cause i having a feeling it would dry my skin completely out and be way to harsh.

^^ That's a valid concern. I've tried Proactiv multiple times and without fail it will make my skin SO dry that the skin on my poor nose actually peels and the rest of it just looks awful. If you think you may have sensitive skin, stay away from Proactiv and try something more gentle.

Thumbs up Re: Help my skin!

bareminerals works great. it covers up everything you need it to, but you may have to reapply it at work. try sheishedo foaming cleanser. it'll run you around $30 at macy's but it lasts for months. you only use a pea size amount of it. MOST IMPORTANTLY, get an appt with a derm and ask for Tazorac 0.5% cream. it's a retinoid vitamin a cream that fades old scars whille anti aging, and a very very effective acne treatment. $150 for 30 grams, but once again, the good stuff lasts forever.

after all, if i promised you great skin for a thousand dollars, you'd probably pay up...

i've done liquid and powder... and I vote for powder 100%.

I use bare minerals so I'll give my input on that... I know theres a kit with different steps or whatnot but I only use the foundation. and its GREAT coverage. really covers my blemishes.. makes my skin look smooth... and I was told at sephora that it's smart make up so it blends in very well with skin tone. I've tried another brand of mineral powder but i had to switch back to bare minerals because I felt it worked better....
ever since I started using it, I randomly get complimented on my skin. I reccomend it.

i looooooooooooove bare minerals. i need to get some more of that.

regarding proactiv, that stuff totally burned my skin. as did tazorac.

if you've got some money to spend on a long term system for your skin, go to a clinique counter and get a 3-step kit. they'll analyze your skin type and then give you an appropriate soap, toner/exfoliator, and moisturizer. proactiv basically ripped off their system, but only offers one option and no way to know if it's right for your skin or not.

Get the sample kit. It's free and you get to try a concealer, two foundations and a blush. It's $3 to ship. Read the descriptions of the colors, they will tell you which ones are good for your skin tone.

I just ordered mine today. You actually get 3 bases (not 2). It was a little confusing at first (thank god for that FAQ) but its worth a shot for just $3 shipping! Cant wait to try it out. Thanks for suggesting it! I dont think i could afford Bare Minerals at this time (Im a SAHM for now). So this is a nice "cheaper" alternative.

I'm going to throw out another plug for Bare Minerals. It covers just fine (actually works well as a concealer and covers better than anything else i've tried). I also use cetaphil and it's great for my skin.

If all else fails, though, get thee to a dermatologist! I did, during my acne's heydey, and the expense was more than worth it. Considering what I had spent on stuff that didn't work, the cost of the visit was a drop in the bucket.

I highly recommend those Dove facial cloths. They get all the make-up off and cleanse the skin without over drying. Also get some oil free moisturizer, Neutrogena makes a really good one.

As for foundation, try the mineral make up.

Simple is always better. I find that when people use too much stuff they can get cosmetic acne and it's like a vicious cycle. Start with the simple stuff and stick with it for a couple of months. If that doesn't work, go see a derm.

    Good luck!

It costs about $50, but it is TOTALLY WORTH IT. I use Lancome's Absolue Makeup (that is not a typo). It is very thick and will cover any blemish or redness. Apply with a makeup brush and blend. Then, use a foam sponge to absorb excess.

I don't have any skincare suggestions, but I went out and bought make-up primer by Rimmel after reading a thread here about base/primer and I love it (it's relatively cheap and a little goes a long way). It really seems to help my makeup stay on much better; I use it after moisturizer and before foundation.

I've heard Bare Minerals can make your skin look really oily. And they don't offer many choices. I use Everyday Minerals and they have a ridiculously large amount of options. I use their concealer, foundation, blush, and finishing powder (great for minimizing shine an oil).

As far as skin care goes, I've never known anything to work better than a 2.5% benzoyl peroxide gel. It completely cleared up my skin.

Before putting on any makeup I use Monistat 7 anti-chaffing gel. It is the best oil absorbing primer ever. I am acne prone and it helps. For a cheap oil free base, try MaxFactor's Pancake Foundation - the one that needs water to apply. It is slightly mattifying and gives great coverage.

I absolutely love Benefit make-up. Their foundation makes your skin look flawless and it doesn't even look like you're wearing make-up. They have all sorts of goodies. As far as acne goes, I'm still trying to find something my skin will actually respond to. My problem is that I'll get a lone monster zit every now and then. Like, hideous gross, so I'm starting to wonder wtf is up.

The monistat anti chafing gel tip is awesome! All my friends use this, it's just as good as the Smashbox primer but SO MUCH CHEAPER!

I don't know as much about the makeup stuff, however since I'm a massage therapist skin care is kind've my business. On your OFF DAYS, you need to find RAW SHEA BUTTER, there's usually kind've a "hippie" store in every mall where they sell candles, homemade skin care stuff, most of those places also sell raw shea butter. For my most EXTREME cases where customers have reactions to lotions, creams I use, RAW SHEA BUTTER can be used. I have one client that had HORRBILE back acne especially in the winter time, I've used raw shea butter on him for over a year, this winter, NOTHING, NADA, I see them about once a week so even small amounts of use makes for HUGE IMPROVEMENT! You may also be able to order raw shea butter online somewhere too, do a google search, unfortunately the biggies (Body Shop Bath Body Works DON'T SELL IT) but every place has one of these hippie stores within 10 miles or so unless you're in the boonies. Next time I'm at that particular client's house I'll get the phone number and website of that place, it's in Flint MI but they ship all over the place and they are reasonable. Shoot me a PM or email and I'll help you if you need it. Hope this helps!

Wow! Thanks sooooooooo much ladies. I wasnt expecting this much help. But you truly are awesome for every tidbit of advise.

My 'Everday Minerals" free trial came in yesterday and i cant wait to pick it up and try it. Im a little nervous though. I never used this kind of stuff so applying it will be a lil ackward.
    Any tips?

Monistat for your face???? Seriously?? The stuff for hemroids right? Wow. I never would have guessed. Not sure how that would work...but cool.

Im going to keep an eye out for that Rimmel primer.

Raw Shea butter.... thats new to me. We do have those hippie stores in our malls (I actually really like that store.). I'll have to check it out. But wouldnt a "butter" make my skin oily-er? Im a little lost on that.

Raw shea butter doesn't have to be used ALL THE TIME. You only need to use a few hours once a week on days off!

    This is copied from

How can Shea Butter benefit me? Shea Butter can provide relief from everything from just dry skin to many minor dermatological diseases (if you have a serious skin condition, you should see a doctor). It has been clinically shown to provide benefits. Here are some of the benefits of Shea Butter for the skin:

    • Daily skin moisturizer (face and body)
    • Dry skin relief
    • Dry scalp
    • Skin rash- including diaper rash
    • Skin peeling, after tanning
    • Blemishes and wrinkles
    • Itching skin due to dryness
    • Sunburn
    • Shaving cream to reduce razor irritation
    • Small skin wounds
    • Skin cracks
    • Soften tough skin on feet (especially heels)

    • Stretch mark prevention during pregnancy
    • Minor burns
    • Eczema
    • Sun and wind protection
    • Even skin tone
    • Reduce blemishes and scarring
    • Eliminating scalp irritation from dryness or chemical processing
    • Preventing bumps after shaving
    • Reducing acne (especially in combination with African Black Soap)
    • Absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue
    • Helps restore elasticity to skin
    • Restores luster to hair

How does Shea Butter benefit my skin?

Shea Butter nourishes the skin with Vitamins A, E and F. Vitamins A and E help maintain the skin and keep it clear and healthy. They are particularly helpful for sun damaged skin. They help prevent premature wrinkles and facial lines. Vitamin F acts as a skin protector and rejuvenator. It soothes rough, dry or chapped skin and helps soften dry or damaged hair. Shea Butter is high in unsaponifiables (a type of fat). Shea Butter has between 7-12% unsaponifiables. For comparison, avocado oil, a well known skin conditioner, has between 2-6%. This high level of unsaponifiables is one of the properties that makes Shea Butter so invaluable in treating the conditions listed above. Also, Shea Butter easily penetrates the skin allowing the skin to breathe and not clogging pores. Shea Butter has a high level of cinnamic acid, a natural sun screen. So, it provides some degree of protection from the sun. Shea Butter is also anti-inflammatory making it useful in treating rheumatism.

While we make no medical claims about our Shea Butter, we do have anecdotal evidence that it is very useful in treating minor skin conditions. We have had several customers who have used Shea Butter for eczema and/or psoriasis and told us it works as well as steroids at a fraction of the cost and without the side effects. We have a customer with an allergy to the sun. When she began using our Nubian Heritage Shea Butter lotion (not even pure Shea Butter), she accidentally discovered that it prevented the rash she normally would get from even a small amount of exposure to the sun.

Like I said I only use it on clients with fairly major skin problems because of lack of availability, extra cost but for the people that use it that are regulars they like it!

    Hope this helps!

    Dale
