    Default Percocet or Vicodin?

I have to get my wisdom teeth taken out in May. Upper and lower, all impacted, and I'm 30, so all of those factors make me an absolute wreck about this surgery. I'm dreading D-day like there is no end to it, and am so distraught over the thought of the pain and the possibility of puking (I'm emetophobic) at some point during the whole thing.
My oral surgeon is very understanding about my puke-phobia, and says that I can pick either vicodin or percocet, if I think one might not upset my stomach more than the other.
I've heard both can make you sick to your stomach. I don't want to be in excruciating pain, but I don't want to get nauseous either. What drug would you guys recommend?
(Any more wisdom-tooth extraction SUCCESS stories will also make my day)

I have Vicodin on prescription as a painkiller and as long as I take it with food, it doesn't make me sick at all. I'm not sure if you need to have an empty stomach or not before you go in for the wisdom teeth surgery?

If you took either on an empty stomach I'd imagine it would make you pretty nauseous, on the other hand you wouldn't have anything in you to puke up. But if you can eat, I would suggest a big(ish) meal and then vicodin, but maybe someone who's used percocet would know better.

Unfortunately I know my success story doesn't quite apply because my teeth were not impacted. I went in for my extractions, it only 90 minutes and I had no problems. Other than the slightest little pinch the first time the othodontist administer the novacane, I felt nothing thereafter.

I was able to drive myself home and as soon as I got home I wrapped by jaw in ice for the rest of the day (20 min on / 20 min off). I used a ski mask and filled it will gel ice packs. Heh. That's the best advice I can give you. By icing it immediately I had little to no swelling.

The doctors gave me a prescription for vicodin, but I never used it. I just popped some advil for the first 24 hours and I never had to take anything after that.

I know I was one of the lucky ones, and I was fairly surprised at how easy it went for me. I was actually anxious having seen some friends get the chipmonk cheeks and tell their horror stories.

Hopefully your experience will be more like mine. Best of luck!

Miss McKenna, that's the hard part, eating a big-ish meal. I guess most people can only get liquids down after wisdom teeth surgery. The biggest reason why this nausea thing is such an issue. I'm scared i won't be able to get enough food in me to tolerate such strong drugs.
Verfolgung, you're story sounds like a party compared to what I'm expecting. Sounds like you had local and had a really easy recovery, lucky. They want to put me under. Blech.

I posted back in August about my wisdom teeth extraction. I had 4 impacted teeth removed at once.http://www.stripperweb.com/forum/sho...=122892&page=2

I was TERRIFIED. But it went very smoothly, and my recovery was no problem at all. Yes, you have to have an empty stomach when you go. For mine, they put me under; I woke up an hour later and just felt kind of dizzy for a few minutes, then I was fine. I probably could have driven myself home, but my mom had come with me. She picked up a few milkshakes on the way home, and dropped me off at home while she ran out for my pain med prescriptions.

Before the anesthesia they had given me at the place wore off, I guzzled milkshakes lol. Then my mom came home, I took my vicodin, and was blissfully happy haha. My doctor gave me an anti-nausea prescription that I would take an hour before the vicodin, so ask your doctor about that.

It was seriously no problem for me. I never had harsh pain or anything...just a sort of dull aching feeling. I didn't need the vicodin at all after just a few days.

I spent my first 2 days with ice packs strapped to my head, so I avoided the dreaded chipmunk face too.

Really, it was no big deal at all. I was eating nice mushy food that day, and was eating normally a few days after that.

My dentist prescribed me painkillers after I had my wisdom teeth removed, although I don't remember which painkiller it was.

Before the surgery I was told to not eat before the surgery. I went under general anesthesia. After the surgery, I took the pain killers and had a little warm tomato soup because I was so hungry. Within the hour, I felt super nauseous. I got up to go to the bathroom but I was so slow that I ended up throwing up all over the bathroom door. I would have made it to the toilet if the door was open. Anyway, since I don't like feeling nauseous or throwing up, I decided not to take anymore of the painkillers. And, actually, the pain really isn't bad. It's like a deep bruise thats aching but gradually the pain goes away. Just lay down, watch tv, and sleep... You'll be fine without the painkillers.

I get nauseous so easy, i'm prescribed phenergen, and i've tried zofran the expensive stuff. I hate nausea, and I don't know why I get is so bad, but I didn't have ANY nausea, at all after getting my wisdom teeth pulled, after my c-section, and after getting my boobs done. So... stop worrying sooo much! Don't they have pain killer coated with phenergen or something, or could you take both I am not sure. You should ask your DR. I know how you feel about being nauseous trust me!

Just be sure not to use a straw with dry sockets! I know someone that got an infection and she was in sooo much pain, had a bloody taste in her mouth, and bad breath.

I had all four of my impacted wisdom teeth removed. I was MORTIFIED being that it was my first surgery of any sort. I ended up waking up in the middle of it (sounds awful, surprisingly wasn't) and felt like it was a really short dream. Was groggy after and had my dad drive me home.

I iced 20 on and 20 off for the rest of that day. I had a prescription for percocets. I don't like being fucked up, so I broke them into quarters. I felt some pain a few hrs after surgery when the numbness went away. Took a quarter of a perc.... took another quarter before bed. The next day I was sore and looked like a chipmunk, but it wasn't intolerable. Mananged to go through the whole ordeal with only 1/2 of a perc. But, I'm a lightweight...

I just had my wisdom teeth out in January and was scared to death too. All of mine had already broken through the gums and impacted, plus I know Vicodin makes me puke.

I let my doctor know I did NOT want Vicodin and he gave me Percocet instead. It was HEAVENLY

Also, I do not know how nervous you are about the surgery itself but it was my first time being "put under" and I was a bawling wreck. We asked the nurse if anything could be done to make me feel better about the IV and being put under and she quickly agreed to let me have laughing gas before they even came near me with a needle. I would definitely recommend asking for that! I was still a little bit scared and aware of what was going on, but I felt 100x better - not like I was about to have a full blown anxiety attack anymore.

If you have any other questions I'd be happy to chime in! Don't worry, you'll be fine. Just keep your mouth very clean after surgery and take some time off to recover. I didn't have any dry sockets or complications.

I had my impacted wisdom teeth removed at 18 or 19, and although I wouldnt say it was fun by any means, its not as bad as you think it will be. Honestly...

I also have had a number of plastic surgeries and get nauseous very easily. I find that as long as you have food with the vicodin, you will be fine. Even if its just a few crackers or slice of bread or even jello if your mouth is sore. Trust me, the food will help a lot... You can also get a medicine prescribed that will ease nausea if you need, but as long as you have food you should be fine. Good luck!

This helps me so much, you guys are making me feel so much better. I've taken vicodin for an ovarian cyst before, and I didn't get nauseous, but I have heard sometimes it's the second or third dose that makes people yak, and I never got that far.
The oral surgeon says he prfers to give me percs, but I don't know how I react at all to those, so I'm nervous. Might go with that dividing it up thing, that seems like a good idea.
Laughing gas, that's an idea too. Does it make you really dizzy though?

Yeah, I would definitely ask about anti-nausea meds to go with whatever you take. I remember having my wisdom teeth out when I was 17 or 18 and it wasn't too bad. I mean, it wasn't fun but it wasn't hell on earth either. I was put under and then once I woke up I was out of it for a while, then it was fine.

hi. i had all four of mine removed. i went with laughing gas, since i didnt want to be put under and there was no way enough novacaine could do the trick. i was pretty out of it and my crap job made me come back to work right after the procedure. did i mention mine got so bad i got an infection and had back pain? i'll spare you the details, since it would have gone better if i got the day off. you wont be able to drive afterwards and if seeing blood might gross you out, you may want to go under. i wanted to watch the procedure, but i'm kinda weird.

i took percocet. i do have them for another condition as well, but take them only a few times a year. i find it helpful to eat saltines or toast beforehand. i would stay away from acidic things, like tomato soup. eat bland food. what i do is cut the pill in half and try and get by on that unless the pain is too bad. i would stay away from advil since it causes heavier bleeding. tylenol is safe to use, but doesnt do crap for me. compazine is an anti-nausea medication you can take, however, it will make you very sleepy.

oh and dont smoke after the surgery.

^Thanks for sparing me the details, as I'm kind of fretting about this surgery enough as it is.
I don't have the choice of being put under or not, it is mandatory that I am put under, my surgeon says.
I will try splitting the pills, definitely. I will also request anti-emetics. However, I don't know about anyone else but Compazine makes me feel like I am going CRAZY!!! I don't know what is with me and that ant-emetic, but when I take Compazine, for two days afterward, I experience extremely heightened anxiety, restlessness (to the point I pace), and blurred vision. I will try asking for Phenergen, since it appears like people have better experiences with that drug.

However, I tend to get a rash on my face from it once and awhile. Best friend after surgery!

I don't get why the doc says you HAVE to go under. My lower wisdom teeth were severely impacted (to the point where they were almost hitting my molars at a 90 degree angle) and I requested only local anesthesia cause I was freaked out about being put to sleep & didn't want to be shot up with narcotics (I have a phobia of needle drugs I guess). Although, I still remember the sound of my teeth being pulled out - kinda creepy. An oral surgeon took them out (several dentists had told me he was "the best in the city") in about 15 minutes. I had chipmunk face for 2 days & the pain was really bad. The vicodin made me fall asleep before I got nauseous (they usually make me feel queasy). I only ate soup for 4 days cause my jaw was so sore. The oral surgeon told me that removing the lower wisdom teeth is more traumatic & always causes more swelling than the top.

I got my upper wisdom teeth pulled a couple years after that (didn't have insurance & the upper ones weren't impacted as bad and didn't bother me). The pain was nowhere near as bad - I was only really sore the day it was done, then a dull pain for 3 more days. But I smoked cigarettes (against doctors orders) and got a dry socket. OMG it hurt soooo bad!!! Don't smoke or suck anything from a straw!! It's not the smoke that'll give you a dry socket, it's the sucking motion of your jaw.

good thread. i need to get my ass to a dentist.

i need to get at least my bottom two taken out as they did not come in 'level' and are still barely under the gum in spots...the top two came in nice and easy...but i'm such a puss when it comes to the dentist that i am probably gonna opt to 'go under' and just have all four ripped out.

and i should have had this done at least 4 years ago. *procrastinating*

true...smoking after having teeth removed can lead to a lil bit of 'dry socket'...that's the only term i've ever heard it called by and i've heard it sucks big time.

Percocet makes me waaay less nausious. Actually not at all nausious like Vics. And I was terrified too but it was a very non-scary event. The anastesia is great too. LOL

I agree, I don't get the mandatory general anesthesia thing either. It is normally left up to the patient. Generally speaking they will use "twilight anesthesia," which is difficult to describe, you aren't really asleep, but not awake either. . and definitely not aware or caring what is happening to you at that point.
I don't know anything about your tolerance for pain, but I can tell you that vicodin is a slightly milder narcotic than percocet if that helps at all. Both meds come in 5mg, 7.5 mg, and 10 mg. So maybe if you have a low pain tolerance, and are worried about the nausea, you could ask for the lower dosage of percocet? Also, like everyone said phenergan is wonderful for nausea spells, will help you sleep AND has the added benefit of boosting the effects of pain meds.

My boyfriend just got 4 wisdom teeth removed this Christmas and everything that could possibly have gone wrong, did. He was prescribed Lortab and those worked wonders with the pain, but due to the anesthesia and antibiotic (amoxicillin), he developed nausea, the vomiting from which caused him to develop dry sockets, which were hellish. The remedy for the vomiting was a suppository called Promethazine, and even though the suppository in itself caused minor discomfort, it totally zapped the nausea so he could begin ingesting liquids like chicken broth and soups after the first day. To help with the pain of the dry sockets, we used clove oil that we picked up from the local drug store. I don't mean to scare you, but we went through hell, and found the remedies for each particular problem. If you can get all of those meds in advance just in case the worst possible scenario takes place, you'll save yourself lots of time and discomfort. Oh and please have somebody to take care of you for a few days after the surgery. If you have any questions I'd be more than happy to help out!

Vicodin is hydrocodone, so is Lortab and Norco. They come in 5/500 and 10/500. The small number is the amount of narcotic in the pill, the large number is the acetominophen.

Percocet is oxycodone, which is considerably stronger than hydrocodone.

People get sick from narcotics because they don't have a tolerance to the drug. They make the mistake of not eating enough on the pills, or taking too many at a time.

Stronger doesn't necessarily mean better in these situations. Painkillers are highly addictive and you should only take them as prescribed, never more and never for anything else. I realize that advice will fall on deaf ears, but I have battled opiate addiction for many years and will never be able to take anything like that again.

    Just be careful. Good luck.

Percocet for sure. Your doc should also prescribe promethazine for nausea too. -I recommend you mention this, since you are prone to puke.
I've had tons of surgeries, and also have a very weak stomach. These two things have also been the most effective at relieving the worst of it all.
You'll be fine. Hope all goes well.
