Default What do you girls say when?....

    Hey ladies,

I have a question. I'm moving from AZ to Southern California within the next couple months, and have a question. I've been a dancer for about a year now, and that has been my only source of income. I do not have a bank account, I just have a pre-paid visa card that I put my money onto. (Ex hubby screwed up the bank account situation for another year or so....long story) I'm searching for apartments, but all of them ask for employment verification and income verification. As dancers, I know alot of girls do not want to tell their landlords they are strippers, even though we know we can afford "x" amount of rent. What do you say or do to qualify for an apartment in this situation? I'm having a lot of difficulty, and all help and ideas would be VERY appreciated. Thanks!

You can use your income tax paperwork to prove your ability to pay. Or, just find a landlord desperate enough to take your word for it.

Waitress, bartender tend to work. See if you can get some one you really trust from your former club to vouch for you, saying that you were a waitress/bartender/shotgirl.

As long as you have enough money for first and last month's rent, plus a deposit, they probably won't mind that you are a dancer. Having that much on hand shows that you are serious.

I said I was a dancer, and I gave them a letter from my club saying how much I make a month. I don't know if you can say that you are a waitress or bartender because you'd need a statement from the bank since waitresses get a salary. Plus, waitresses don't make a lot $$ /hour...

I told my landlord I'm a stripper and they never gave me any grief...

These days Landlords don't seem to tend to have much problem with us being strippers. Employers, unfortunately, still do.

When i worked full time at red lobster i made about 1000 a week. never brought home less than seven hundred. and in some clubs, the waitresses and bartender are on as idependent contractors instead of employees.

If you can manage it, offering 6 months' rent upfront is a great way to cut through all the employment/income verification bullshit.

I'm not condoning or recommending this, so please do me the courtesy of not jumping down my throat or lecturing. But once, when I was just getting out of an abusive relationship and was desperate (i.e. sleeping in my car with nowhere to go)....I totally faked it. Printed up a months' worth of fake paystubs, found someone to pose as my manager/employment reference...it worked, but I'd rather just offer 6 months' rent upfront and not have to worry about lying.

Also, private landlords are the way to go. Individuals are generally more flexible than companies, and won't make you jump through as many hoops just to get a roof over your head.

    Best of luck.
