Default Who do you get your health insurance through?

Since I'm no longer in school and am now a full-time stripper, I no longer have health insurance coverage. I'm calling around to get quotes. Basically, I want the cheapest insurance that will cover my ass in case the unthinkable happens and I get seriously sick or injured. I don't mind paying out of pocket to see the dr., since I rarely get sick enough to need one (knock on wood). I'm not on any prescription medicines, don't smoke, don't have anyone to support except myself, and am generally healthy.

Who do you ladies use/recommend? And what do you pay, if you don't mind my asking?

I found broker in my area that deals with all types of insurance. He was able to explain to me what policy would work the best for me and my kids. I currently have Healthnet. I pay about $285 for two adults and two kids. Its kinda like car insurance. The higher the deductable, the lower the mothyly payment.

There are all different types though. If you just want something to cover emergencies and long term illnesses (like cancer) but no monthly doctor visits you could get something like catastrophic insurance which is much cheaper a month (like $65.)

I'm with Mega Health and Life. I've got basic catastrophic coverage and a small amount of basic coverage for things like yearly exams and up to 3 other Dr. visits for illness. I pay $364 a month with a $3000 deductible.

    ooh! that's a good deal!

thanks, everyone who responded. It's good to just get a sense of what's out there. So far my quotes are ranging from $80-$180/month. It sucks having to shell out for this, but it feels good to be responsible. Also it feels good knowing I won't bankrupt my family if--god forbid--I get really sick.

I've had Blue Cross forever and a day. I'm not even sure what I'm paying. I also have a medical discount though, which I prefer over the insurance because everything is cheap and I don't have to file paperwork for most stuff. The great thing is that I can use the two together!

I just looked into Blue Cross--they were the cheapest out of everything I've found! I think I'll probably go with them.

How do you get a medical discount, though?

You can contact me via PM if you want the name of the company I use. There are a lot of discount places but the one I'm with has been around the longest and is accepted by a lot more doctors and pharmacies. It's $40/mo and covers a ton of different stuff: medical, dental, vision, chiropractic, pharmaceuticals.

What I found with regular health insurance was that I was avoiding going to the doctors and putting things off because I didn't want to deal with the paperwork. So I changed my health insurance to a different plan that is more for just major emergencies, and got the discount plan to cover more everyday stuff. It's MUCH easier now and I can just go straight into the doctor and not worry so much about it.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

3K deductible . with > 4K annual premium?? Was that a typo, did you actually mean 300 deductible with 1 less zero??

I actually sell insurance (health, life, annuities) during the day and I am independently contracted with companies, so Im not biased to one provider. I think for an individual, the best coverage for what you pay is Golden Rule by United Health Care. It was actually created for this demographic, (younger, self employed, healthy), but still offers the most benefits for the price, IMO.

Check with the larger hospitals in your town; most will have insurance plans. You'll be limited to that hospital and its providers, but it will be cheap coverage for the "inevitable."

I am still in school so I don't pay my own but I've been with Blue Cross Blue Shield for my whole life. If thats the cheapest I would go with them, its the same plan all our government workers have including Congress and I travel alot and they are excepted at many major hospitals around the world. I really like the fact that you have so many options of doctors to go to with them so you can choose who you want to see, and they leave treatment desicions entirely up to the doctors unlike many HMOs.

I looked into Golden Rule, but they don't have it in my area. I ended up going with Blue Cross Blue Shield, which I got through ehealthinsurance.com.

I may also get the discount company in the future, but right now the thought of an extra $40/month is making me choke a little.

Thanks, everyone. I can breathe a sigh of relief now that I am insured.

does anyone know much about aflac? a manager had a couple of guys from aflac come in and try to sign girls up in the dressing room. they said something about how they don't provide "preventive" healthcare (like birth-control) which is what i want. They're more like the "in-case" health-care. Like if you break ur ankle and can't work, they'll give you money while you're recovering from the injury. or something like that.

^^^ Maybe it's just me, but I'd want something that is going to help me to stay healthy - not just pay me when I get sick.

I was under the impression that aflac is disability insurance - they don't provide coverage for healthcare, but they will cover your ass and give you money if you become injured and unable to work

    its form of workers compensation

For the record, Aflac has somewhat of a bad rep in the insurance world, at least their ridiculously over priced homeowners policies.
