    Exclamation Herniated discs?!

Yep. I'm 23 years old and have two herniated discs in my neck. I have scoliosis, but it's hardly noticeable (except for when it FUCKS ME, like now).

    I'm auditioning in May.

Doc Hottie (why are the young doctors so cute?) says that I don't need surgery; just health insurance, and then physical therapy.

Has anyone dealt with this before? A friend of mine is begging me not to audition, saying I'm going to end up really hurting myself. I'm not an acrobat - I'm more of a swing-the-hips-shake-the-booty belly dancing type.

Opinions? Is this a really, really bad idea?

I'm going to say if you have herniated disks in your neck to stay away from the pole. Even just putting one hand up and spinning will pull all the muscles on one side enough that you may really screw yourself. Good luck.

No pole work - ok, I can do that. Aforementioned friend is trying to convince me that even walking in the heels is going to be really harmful, but -- I don't know about that. It seems like she's just being a little over-protective. Thoughts on shoes?

    Thanks so much!!

Ask your Dr about the stability of the discs. There are different kinds of herniations, some more stable than others.

If you combine your orthopedist, with a physical therapist and good chiropractor, you should be able to maintain some stability in your back. Heels can hurt anyone's back from the feet up to your head, but it shouldnt mean you cant do a lot of everyday things.

Ask your dr...trust me, they have heard crazier things!

    good luck!

Just wear the shortest platforms you can find. Probably 3 or 4 inches in the heel. (ask your dr of course) NEVER wear the old stillettos. The angle of the shoe is too severe- esp in your case. Not to mention they hurt your feet.

This is probably a good rule of thumb for me anyway -- I'm 5'7", 116lbs and 6'1" in four inch heels -- I'd probably look like a creature from a Tool video in anything higher!

I have three herniated discs, one of which is in my neck.
I've been dancing for 5 years and have begun learning pole work recently.

Realistically it hugely depends on each individual case ya know?
I did a lot of physical therapy to strengthen muscles that would support the areas around the bad disks.

I think it's assumed if you have this issue you should avoid physical activity when in reality it can actually make things worse in the long run.

And for the record I wear 7 inch heels at work.

What I'm trying to say is in pole work most people do certain moves one way. With the same hand/leg combo. Repeatedly. This will cause your muscles to build up on one side and may throw her out of whack.
7inch heels are platforms. Which are really 4 inches if you take away the 3" difference of the front part of the platform. They're more stable than they look.
I personally wouldn't do anything that would cause a problem like that to potentially get worse.
Definitely do whatever activity your dr. says is good, stretches ect.

And what i'm saying is depending on the individual it's not out of the realm of possibility to be an active person with an active job with the issue she described.
