    Default Question: Tanning

I haven't gone tanning in a long time just because of it's harmful effects, etc. However, I want to go a few times before a trip that I have. My questions:

1.) How long before the trip should I start going?

2.) How many times will I have to go to get a subtle tan?

Mystic tanning is out of the question for this one.

    Thanks, girls!

I can't see your complexion, nor do i know your background or what beds you would be going in. The girls at the salon will help you. Just go and explain to them you want a base tan before your vacay, alot of people do that. They can help you better than anyone else as they are familiar with their equipment.

I don't really recommend tanning in the beds for anyone, unless they are my arch nemesis. But, you didn't ask for a lecture. Soooo before I tell you what to do/what not to do, just fill out my spontaneous questionnaire:

*When you're at the palest, what's the color of your skin?
*What's your natural hair color? Eye color?
*How well do your parents tan?
*How does your skin react when you go into the sun for a few hours& you're not wearing SPF?
*What's your dominant ethnic background? People who want to talk themselves into tanning always mention "I'm 1/32 cherokee" but realistically, it doesn't make a huge difference unless you're at least 1/8-1/4 of something.
*Do you have a lot of moles and freckles?
*What's the texture of your skin?
*Do you follow a pretty loyal skin care regime including moisturizing and exfoliating?

I very, very briefly tried bed tanning a few times. I stopped, because no matter what salon I went to, all the girls were totally clueless, and they all said they'd been working for years. I ask what the tanning lotions do, they say, "It makes your tan last longer." Ask how, they're like, "Um....I dunno? But it really works, and you get a deal if you buy three." Ask how often I should tan just to get a little color, they're like, "Oh, we have our every day package for $25/month." Ask if I should really be tanning every day, as light as I am, they're like, "Oh yeah, you're super pale, you need to be soooo much darker, that'd be so hot."

So...I stopped. And started using self-tanners, which is an odyssey unto itself, but at least it won't give me skin cancer.

See? Too many UV rays fried their brains. (jk) I've only tanned a few dozen times, due to the health risks (I was giving up an epic paling experiment) and I would recommend using a self-tanner before your trip and sunscreen while vacationing, but I understand wanting to tan.

I wouldn't trust anyplace that couldn't explain what's going on with their products & services and my experience, the packages aren't really good deals at all, they're just trying to make sales.

btw, the lotions just keep skin smooth and soft rather than dry/flaky-ish; without any type of coloring agent, that's the only reason that they prolong the tan. Again, they're making an extra sale and encouraging an unnecessary purchase, especially if you're already moisturizing.

If you are blond and blue eyed - freckle easily and are prone to burning after being in the natural sun. START SLOWLY, I would recommend using a tanning lotion such as Bombshell. With NO TINGLE.. Designer skin, Australian Gold have excellent products. You need an accelerator.. not a bronzer. I would recommend five minutes at first

If the instructions say wipe hands or wash hands after application, it's a bronzer. These products enhance an already established base tan.l

If you are brunette, with an olive tone to your skin. Still be careful - but you can start off with seven or eight minutes. Again, use a tanning lotion. These products are state of the art and formulated for tanning and tanned skin. Read the bottles..

Wait at least thirty minutes AFTER you tan before you bathe. Give the lotion time to work and always, always always use some sort of regular lotion after your bath. I use coco butter personally

Also just to be safe - do a test patch on the inside of your wrist to make sure your not allergic to whatever product you choose to tan with.

i have the same features as you and normally to get the best results i use a indoor tanning lotion that has a bronzer already in it. i always start out with 8 minutes and build my way up to the maximum. i ask the girl which machine has the highest UV and use that for my last bed. i start out really slow and depending on the tan i get after the first time i either add a couple min or move on to another bed. i prefer the laydown beds over the standups. but thats just me. also it takes me about a 5 tans to have anyone notice a tan and at 15 i get pretty dark. i like to mix spray and bed tanning to get the best results. tan one day and spray the next. if you tan daily you are more likely to get burned because in the beginning your skin hasnt developed a base tan. hope that helps!! =)

Wanted to add - facial skin. This is the skin that covers mostly all of your chest. The part before it reaches the breast. ( Face included )

This skin is harder to tan in some individuals and is prone to BURN easier. Thus, take extra care with this skin. My own personal regime is to use a product designed for this skin on my face until it tans lightly. THEN use a bronzer just on my face and chest area. Australian gold makes a good facial tanning lotion.

omg you basically summed up basically every girl I've met, aside from a couple, that works at a tanning salon. I'm not going to trust some idiot 18-year-old-girl who is still in denial that tanning speeds up the aging process and increases risk of cancer. I'm a natural redhead and spray tan only, but you'd be surprised how many people at the salon would recommend that I go into the highest bed at the highest time, because they are just that clueless.

Tanning in tanning beds is basically the worst of both worlds because the tan usually looks artificial and you're doing major damage to your skin. Newer tanning-bed technology utilizes the UVA rays as a selling point... The salons tell you UVA is a non-burning ray, which might be true, but UVA rays are also less likely to tan your skin and end up penetrating all layers of your skin.. so you could really be doing damage that you won't see until years later. I have a friend that tans super easily in the sun, but she went to a tanning salon about 10 times over the course of a month and so little to no difference in her color. And UVA rays are actually more likely to cause skin cancer. UVB rays are responsible for most sunburns, however the damage is more superficial.

Tanning beds also increase the amount of moles and freckles on your body- which sucks, but you'll be lucky if they aren't cancerous. I would take creamy, flawless skin over toasted with a lot of moles and freckles. However, if you do want a tan (and I know that it makes most people feel more self confident) fake tanning "technology" (lol) has come a LONG way. If you want something subtle, Jergins 3-day/Bare Essentials Faux tan are great at-home options... or if you want to go a lot darker, Yelp a reputable spray-tan technition in your area.

Skin is the first superficial factor that ages us, and tanning is like flushing years of your youth down the toilet! Dun do it!! You can't undo skin damage with expensive creams. Preventing damage is ten times better than reversing it.

Ok I sound like my mom and I'm done.

To answer the original question, every other day 5-7 minutes at a time for about 2 weeks. Increasing the second week by 7-9 minutes. You should be good.

    Moisturize everyday!
