Default Can someone explain hair extensions to me?

I'm really itching for longer hair, and have been considering hair extensions. There is NO way that I can afford the $600+ price tag that comes with them though... so I was wondering if there is anyone out there who has experience with DIY extensions?

How difficult are they to do? How exactly are they put in? Any idea what kind of price range I'd be looking at? And how hard are they on your natural hair? How long will they stay in for?

I really am absolutely clueless about this type of thing. I did a google search but am just coming up with websites selling the things, and would like some feedback from REAL ladies who have actually tried them!.

    Teach me!
    Thanks in advance everyone.

I've been gluing in tracks of hair lately, it's kind of ghetto, but really cheap. Hair + glue = $50
Or, I make my own clip ins, you can search for that on youtube.com and it will show you how.

hmmm... what do you guys think of this?:

I'd love to go with the "body wave"... but my natural hair is completely straight. It probably wouldn't work well would it?

maybe, I've had body wave before, but they're not my favorite. They seem to tangle easily when wet. That kit sounds like a good value, I would go for it. But keep in mind, EVERY type of hair extension will in some way damage your hair. Be careful if you have fine hair, maybe wear them one week a month or something like that.

ahhh ok... I was really wanting something that I could wear ALL the time, even if it means putting them back in every few washes or whatever. Is this an unrealistic hope?

My hair is about five inches long, and very fine. I glue in 18" tracks with liquid gold. They last about a month...
There's TONS of DIY info here:
In short, however, I follow these:

Wefts aren't as free-flowing as singles, but take WAY less time, effort, skill, and heat burns:p Also because I have short fine hair I can't add enough singles to it or hide them as well as wefts.

Buy good hair. Definitely Remy/Remi, you get what you pay for. You can buy crap hair and it will tangle and need replacing over and over, good hair can be reused several times.

Enough hair for one install for me is around $150 for 4oz. I don't need that much because I do have fine hair. If my hair was this short but thicker I would need more hair to add. It's tricky to know how much you will need at first for your purposes...

Some people say there is no damage, some say there always will be. I'm ok but you have to GO SLOW when you remove! Don't yank 'em outta there! OH and give your hair a day or two break between installs!

Do you like the Liquid gold? I prefer the dark one, it seems to hold better.

So, in the past couple days since I posted this, I have done a TON of research on this, and have basically decided what I am going to do. I still would love to do the body wave, but think I will go with straight hair... I can always style it with my curling iron if need be haha.

I'm going to do something called "double sandwiching", which is a combo of tape and liquid gold (JD, what is this darker stuff called?). Basically, it's supposed to help them stay set in place longer than if you were to use just tape OR glue, and also makes the wefts less visible (apparently).

I think I'm going to go with 18" (unless I could get 16?)... though I don't know if I will keep it that long, since I'm pretty short (5'2 or 3) and I wonder if it would look ridiculous?

Where do you order from Jayla? and what type do you get?

I just use the clip-ins... I have really fine hair and the glue breaks my hair off and just wreaks havoc... The clip-ins haven't damaged my hair at all...

I just take them off when I want to wear my natural hair...

The liquid gold is the only bond I have tried-- I heard it's THE glue, I like it, definitely interested in something that will hold better though! I never get 6 weeks out of it like some have said. But they say every one's hair is different, and holds a bond for different times. :/

    I use this hair:
It's "singer"'s hair they are always talking about on the boards. I have straight silky hair so I use that european straight hair. I bought my syringe, glues, and remover all in the same place. They have the tape too (which I might try now!)

Hmmm, I'm 5'2, wonder if I look ridiculous? LOL

Or even the ones from Sally. I used those for a long time while my hair was growing out. They looked great and only cost about $60.

I definitely wouldn't put anything potentially damaging (like glue) into my hair.

Salon Pro dark hair glue, its more rubbery and dries better, I don't know, I just like it better all around. They also make a remover that is supposed to dissolve the glue for when you take them out, but I've never used it.

So JD, how do you take them out to re-do them then? Does the glue eventually just wear out enough so that the extensions come out easily?

Jayla, would you be so kind as to put up a pic of your hair? pretty please?

Jayla and I do them totally different. My hair is not so short, its about 3 inches past my shoulders. However, it is thin, and lacking the Victorias Secret volume and fullness that I try to achieve. I use 14 inch hair, and only 2/3 of the pack. I fold the strip of hair in half and glue that together, so the hair is twice as thick per weft. I only glue on three wefts, all towards the bottom back, for length.

Now, they last about a week or so and then slowly get looser, so I'll sit in the bathtub and work conditioner into where it was glued, or starting to come unglued. Slowly but surely, they loosen and just come out! But you HAVE to be GENTLE, or you WILL pull out your hair and eventually have bald spots. It takes me about an 30 minutes to get them completely out. This glue kind of balls up into rubbery balls. I can't really explain it... I try to leave them out for a few days and then back in they go!

xXDominoXx, I'm putting new ones in (god I hope) this week, so I can post before, during, and after weave pictures for you!
I'm getting ready to audition in my city's only club and noticed basically ALL the girls had long dark hair... like I was wearing! I thought I would be different and got the dark ash blonde this time (my natural colour!)... so they're hanging out on my kitchen table with all my glue and pins... while I look for someone who can strip and match my dyed-almost-black hair to this colour! Duh! Bad idea.
Waiting for a call back from a "master colourist" who cut off some of mine to work on. We will either match my hair to the extensions or the extensions to my hair (what a waste if that's the case!)
If this thread is way down by then I'll just PM you! Haha

I've had three diff types of hair extensions, and I'll tell you this: You get what you pay for. If you get a cheaper bond method (like monkey bars) at the salon, they will shed like crazy and you will be miserable. Then you have to get the bond removed, which hurts and slightly damages your hair, and costs you money. The shedding is rediculous and embarassing.

I tried great lengths and paid around 3 grand for them. They shed like nuts as well, but the bonds stay in and do not damage your hair nearly as bad when they come out....Again tho, the shedding is out of control. And the bonds are large and you can feel them easily, and see them easily as well when your hair grows out. They only lasted about two months....

Now I have in So Cap USA bonds that I just got put in,....I paid 1300 for them. I'll let you know how they do seeing I just got them put in yesterday!

Honestly, tho, I would do serious research and get a lot of opinions from ppl before spending any money at the salon if you consider going that route...PM me if you need any info!
I'd grab my trumpet and I'd do a stripper sound, like the old Louis Armstrong, real raspy. And the people would go nuts! Then I knew that the sexual, sensual, guttural sound, that throbbing sound, is where it's at.

    I've used

    1. glue
    2. clip ins
    3. weave
    4. fusions - or w/e they're called. basically pieces of hair bonded to my real hair

My favorite type so far are the clip-ins. I can take them out before I go to bed so they're not a tangled mess. Yes, there is probably some damage bc I tease my hair before I put them in (to help hold them in place), but it's minimal compared to how much hair I felt was pulled out when I had the other procedures done.

You can buy or make clip-ins. I choose to make them bc it's cheaper. And def listen to what people said about getting good-quality hair. It will last you longer in the longrun and is worth the price.
