Default Who is planting a garden this year?

I started working on mine yesterday. I've got some seeds I'm starting outdoors; zucchini, runner beans and cucumbers. I also plan on adding tomatoes, pumpkin, peppers, onion, and a small herb garden patch.

So is anyone else growing their own food this year? I usually send anything I can't use to the local food bank. They are always happy to get fresh produce.

I'll post pics when the plants start sprouting.

That's awesome! I started planting seeds in late February, and now my living room is starting to get a bit overgrown- we have everything from corn to chamomile to moonflowers- the biggest issue so far is keeping my cat from eating them before we can plant them outside.

Soil is just thawing out to a good depth. Gonna try a late start for my garlic.

Parsley is very nice looking greenery and easy to grow.

I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

I would LOVE to! I think that being as self-sustaining as possible is the KEY for the future.

I'm actually moving to Tokyo next week and need to figure out the garden/soil situation once I get there. I hear the weather is akin to the state of VA, so I guess it supports a good array of produce. I want to make an apt-size garden!

Communities/neighborhoods really ought to start planning big urban gardens so we can take care of each other in hard times (i.e. NOW!)

I just got this organic gardening book and it says to plant marigolds in and around your food plants. The reason is because that marigolds act like a natural pesticide for your food plants.

It also says to plant petunias next to beans as the roots emit nitrogen and are also good at combating pests. Petunias and marigolds are some of the easiest ornamental flowers to grow as well.

Hmmm...I wonder if there are any nice looking ornamental vegetable gardens? I've always planted for practical reasons without thinking about landscape appeal.

Normally I do. I've fought with my yard/garden for the last four years. About the only thing I can get to grow in it is gourds and spaghetti squash. I'm basically living on desert land of sand. I've put all kinds of junk in my yard to help revitalize the soil... but had no luck. This year I'm debating on if it's even worth it to bother.

Two years ago I got mad and put in a waterfall to take up most of the space in the yard since nothing would grow. Last year I decided that the pond portion was too much of a pain and I redid it as a pondless waterfall. The pets love it! Now I need to figure out if I want to do potted vegetables, or if my summer travel schedule means that they wouldn't be taken care of and just die anyhow.

i'm planting at my grandma's place this coming april. our garden has to be pretty self sufficient because she will not be able to take care of it and i wont be around more than once a month or so. luckily the climate is mild-ish and there is good rainfall/sun exposure so i'm thinking it will be all good!

i'm going to clear a patch about 6ft by 6ft and plant low maintenance stuff like butternut squash, watermelons and cucumbers with a bunch of marigolds for pest control. i'm also going to put up wire fencing to keep out the rabbits.

RAISED BED (at least 6 inches) and MIRACLE GROW POTTING SOIL
Mix about 50-50 with your regular weeded soil.

Started turning the soil over this weekend. But it's so dry, that they are just big clods of clay. Kylea: Can we swap some clay for sand?

Going to try again this year. Might have to try raised beds, too much crab grass to fight with and way way too much clay here. John's not happy about the raised bed idea but he does kinda under stand that it might make it easier.

We won't start our gardens here till mid May, still not enough time to plan and prep!

Paris, great idea about donating to the food bank! I tell the people that live neighborhood (a lot of them are not in good shape) that they can help themselves but try and save something for the next person. I take what I need but I try and plant extra.

I'm jealous of all of you who have yards! My BF and I were just talking last night about how awesome it would be to have a garden. Neither of us are into growing flowers, but growing our own produce would kick ass.

Whenever I have the money to buy a little house, I am so turning the backyard into a fruit and vegetable garden.

You could container garden. Strawberries, peppers, tomatoes and herbs respond very well to containers. One year I grew tomatoes on my balcony of my apartment and had tomatoes for months!

^^ Everblooming strawberry plants. You can have strawberries on your Wheaties every morning (and believe me they need something).

i'm doing a veggie garden thats about 10x10 and a flower one for cutting thats smaller. i do one every year with mixed results cause sometimes i slack on the weed plucking and the watering
These days I like to count my money. I like to wash it delicately and iron it. Sometimes I dry it with some bounty to make it all nice and cuddly. I love my money... did I say that out loud?

not the best link, but decent enough for an overview:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugelkultur

we are probably going this route this year, because it is extremely easy and low maintenance and you get nice yields.

I know this might sound gross, but if your sprinkle human hair around marigolds, not only do you have pesticide but the rabbits and other fuzzies will stay away.

Growing veggies for the first time in a long time.
Getting my patch ready - top soil, peat moss & manure. At the beginning of May I'll plant my tomatoe and pepper seedlings and my carrots. Two weeks later I'll plant my scallions and then my strawberries and then my radishes. Still deciding on whether or not to plant zucchini.

Corn is a waste. Every time I used to do it, the squirrels loved it.

You're up in 'Cuse so you MUST wait until Mid-May at the earliest. You can't plant until there is little to no risk of a freeze. For tomatoes, peppers and squash, you have to wait until Memorial Day- they all like warm weather.

Mostly thinking of broccoli etc. Last year I put out tomato and pepper plants on May 1 but had to cover them a few nights. It worked out fine. I always check soil temperatures.
