I just want to know....considering this is a "STRIPPERS" forum, why does it seem many of you don't consider yourselves strippers?

Often enough you refer yourselves as "DANCERS"...although you know you are "stripping" (removing) clothing off for entertainment purposes.

    Why?

My job entails more entertaining/dancing than it does stripping. Besides, there are all the false stereotypes about "strippers"... and some of them are just down right wrong and offensive.

I use the terms interchangeably. I strip, and I dance, so I think either term is appropriate. If others don't like the negative baggage that often accompanies the word "stripper" and prefer to refer to themselves as dancers, I can understand that as well.

^^^ I use to never say "stripper". I say it a lot more now, but somehow when I hear other people say it I tend to find it more offensive... but I think that often has to do with the context they are using it in.

When I first started dancing, the club I worked for always referred to us as dancers or entertainers. The staff were not allowed to call us strippers. I always though it was weird, as stripper is a much more accurate label for describing what we do. I went with the flow though, and never called myself a stripper until I left that club.

Now, I use all three words. Stripper, dancer, entertainer, it all means the same thing to me. I've never actually met a girl who took offense to being called a stripper, but I've heard that they exist.

why it's so important to you what name a dancer/stripper uses to describe herself?

    lol^

doesn't really matter... dancer or stripper

i like dancer better.. because i feel like it is more broad and incorporates everything i do... and stripping is sort of a piece of dancing in a way

I always considered myself a dancer. One reason is because I come from a dance background. Also, because at a few clubs I was strictly a go-go dancer. I couldn't take anything off.

Where I am stripper is derogatory, and we tend to only use it with each other and more of a joke than anything. When non-entertainers use it it can come out sounding REALLY bad.
I prefer dancer or entertainer when I explain my job, it tends to have a more welcome reception, and I would rather have a more welcome reception than someone automatically thinking about all the degrading assumptions of the job that comes with the term stripper.
But, I think it really does matter where you are as well.

Some dancers also don't like you calling their place of work "Strip Club"... It's a "Gentleman's Club." I am surprised that most people in this forum use "SC" instead of "GC".

Oh...I personally hate calling it "Gentleman's Club" and I cannot explain why. Somehow its sounds snobbish and fake for me. Maybe I am weird. I have no such connotations for using "dancer" as opposite to "stripper".

From the title of this thread and the "FLAME ON," it seems silly for you to continue to pretend that you just can't possibly understand the reactions you get

I certainly don't think of all these clubs as GC. Some are SC, some are neighborhood SC (like Cheers with dancers), some are totally TB, and others are more GC. I would say GC has become pretty rare though.

I'm not sure what the technical distinctions are. Last time I was in an upscale Houston club, I asked a dancer why they don't have any stripper poles in any of the stages. She explained that they were a GC and not a SC. In this club, the dancers covered their nipples with pasties - is that the only difference?... This same club is now calling itself a "bikini bar" to try to evade the city's aggressive campaign against GC/SC. (The city actually closed down the Penthouse Club, which was one of the best clubs in town.)

I visited another upscale Houston club and this second one had a really cool led stripper pole on the center of the stage, so I guess it was a SC,... but everything was nearly identical to the GC. Most of the dancers also wore pasties on their nipples, but I think I saw 1 or 2 that did not...
