Search What would REALLY happen if everyone knew you were a dancer?

Would it really be so terrible?

i mean, i don't think people are gonna spit on you... but i know it wouldn't be a walk in the park.....

What do you all think are the pros and cons of people knowing/ being open about your job choice... if it's something you really like doing?

I think most of us hide the fact that we strip because alot of the time people don't agree with it. Alot of people associate stripping with drugs and prostitution and think taking our clothes off for a living is degrading. It would be great if we were seen as performers and not the stereotypical junkie stripper! Some of the smartest girls i know are dancers!

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, I don't hide my job from anybody. My whole family knows, I don't work any other job.. so I'm overly open about it. I haven't had any problems yet.

Amen. I don't tell anyone because I don't want to hear "Oh you're too good for that" or "Isn't that kind of degrading?". People just do NOT understand what it is really like to be a dancer because they have never done it. Just like I have no idea what it's like to be a garbage man. People could consider that degrading, but it's a job!
I agree with you about how many dancers are smart. I've met many intelligent, well-spoken, beautiful women who just happen to be dancers.

Not to toot my own horn, but I'm going to school for dental hygiene, and I've maintained a 4.0 all year (this is my first year).

And as for the drug thing, I find it ridiculous that people think all strippers are addicted to meth or heroin. I only smoke pot (mostly for medicinal purposes) and drink once in a while. Given, there are a few out there that give the rest of us a bad name, but I think there's those type of people in every profession.

All but one person in my circle of family/friends knows that I dance. The one family member who doesn't know is super conservative Christian and even though she knows about the classes I teach... I don't think she fully "gets" it. I should also add that she's the uneducated type and it's about worthless to argue with her on anything including religious matters.

I like the fact that I don't have to hide it. I also like the fact that when people say stupid stuff in front of me about dancers I can jump on their case about it and tell them just how wrong they are.

stripping is constrained by class. many of the bad stereotypes come more from the class background of the majority of strippers than the work itself.

i suppose if you managed to get most strippers to be from the upper classes, then you'd probably see the stigma reduce quite a bit.

I would not only lose my current job nannying, but I'd probably have trouble getting another job with kids again. That was the first thing my bff said when I told her, "Don't you want to work with kids??" She thought the job would show up on background checks, and I had to explain that it wouldn't, that there's no way to trace me to the job in the future.

My parents would probably be very disappointed and embarrassed. They were proud of my nanny job and when I got the second job I told them I was a cocktail waitress at - get this - a country club. They were excited about that too, really chatty about what GREAT EXPERIENCE it was. lol The fact that as a cocktail waitress I'd be serving alcohol explains why I'm at work until 3 AM, and the country club bit makes it so that they can't come into town and ask to go see where I work. Members only!

I don't know if I'll keep my current job much longer, though. I'm thinking of moving on to a more mainstream club at least.

I think the more stripping is accepted and the less taboo it becomes, more girls will want to dance. Also I don't think men would find it so appealing, thus possibly lessening the customers in clubs. I think the more "naughty" people think it is, the more chance we have of making money.
I guess we just have to make sacrifices for a good income.

i'm not dancing yet, but will probably keep quiet about it when i do, because i dont feel like dealing with people's stereotypes and negativity... that is their problem, i do not want it to become mine.

also, it must be horribly annoying to get the same questions and comments all the time even if they are well intentioned "omg...why do you do that? do you enjoy it? but you are such a nice girl!" etc etc etc.

i may end up working with certain very conservative groups for my student thesis, if they knew i was a dancer it would not be good for my research at all!

I agree, I really think we should do something, like educate the public or something. It's like discrimination to get fired from a job because of dancing, at least I would think so.

I hear ya...it's hard when someone asks "So where do you work?" Thankfully I have another job @ a liquor store so I just use that. I hate lying soo much! If only they really knew what kind of money I was making!! lol. But I've only told my boyfriend and my very close friends. My parents don't know, and my sister and one cousin knows. But my cousin is an escort, so obviously she would never say anything.

And it's so hard not to jump in on a conversation when someone starts talking about stripping. It's like leading 2 lives.

I've been "out" since 2004. Nothing majorly bad has happened, but I did lose some long-time friends. My neighbor's daughter isn't allowed to talk to me (not that I care). I may get turned down for future jobs, if I wanted one, in teaching or politics.

I was once refused service by a Hotel in a small town where I was dancing. That was an eye-opener. They said right to my face "we don't rent to strippers". It wasn't like I walked in and said "Hi I'm a stripper and I need a room!" or anything. It was a nice hotel just down the street from the club that got a lot of traveling girls, so the night clerk assumed I was a stripper. It didn't help that I had just gotten off shift and was in full on stripper makeup and hair. When I just looked at the clerk and said "Excuse me?" she back peddled a bit and said they had no vacancies. Whatever!

Since I had nothing to risk, as I was leaving I said to her "You probably say 'red-neck' like it's a good thing".

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!

^^^ Sounds like another report for the Better Business Bureau.

I'm pretty much of the opinion now that if you don't like what I do for work you can "bite me" and stay away because I don't really care.

I've been refused a loan for a house..

Plus, I can't begin to count the times some ignorant boy/man says... " Hey, can you hook me up with, a girl/drugs and so forth.

Civvy women are the worst when they find out, it's like I need study or help. Or worse yet I am out to sleep with and or have meaningless sex with their SO. Please.

Until individuals become more open minded about sex and sexuality plus stop attaching weird propaganda type stigmas to sex workers in general. These types of narrow minded ideals will prevail.

So.. that means never. Because there will always be some uptight, repressed person to point the finger and scream about the "ebil skripper"

I think I would mention this depending on where where I was and the the reputation dancing has in a given area , where I live most people are very conservative and are always attempting to shut the clubs down, for some reason there are alot of foreign girls who sell cheap dances and do alot of extras and this has given the industry here a very bad reputation.
So I think that it would be natural for these kind of people to just assume that your a part of some dark underworld or your some kind of deviant etc. if it was brought up in conversation.

WOW, really? What company was that? I got my home loan with no problem.

After reading Paris's story about the motel refusing her a room I think maybe we need a public list of companies to boycott until they are willing to change their attitudes.
