    Dizzy Stripper moms

    Hey Ladies,
After having my baby 2 years ago and leaving her loser cheating, non child support paying dad I decided to go back to dancing a couple nights a week ( 1 to 3) to get back on our feet.
I am trying to figure out the child care issue. My toddler is 2 and a half and has never been in a daycare yet.
My parents and grandparents are dead and there are no other close relatives so I can't use them. I have a sweet lady friend that will do it for free from time to time if I need a mental health break but she is not always available when I need her. I hired a 23 year old sitter but she is a little flaky and has canceled on me twice when I really needed her the most like The first day I was scheduled a " test shift" !( the manager gave me a prime Saturday night 10-3 shift and she canceled 2 hours before I was supposed to arrive - Not Cool!) She also charges 12 an hour which I think is a little high for night shift. ( I need her for 6 hours per shift) She doesn't have to do anything but watch tv, read, study, surf the net or even nap! my daughter might wake up once and need some water or a training pant and that's it!

What I want to know for other dancing moms of small children:
What do you do for childcare during your dance shifts?
Which shift do you work and think is better for moms?
If you use a sitter how much do you pay them to sit for night shift?
Does your sitter know what you do ?
Do you use more than one sitter in case one flakes?
Was it hard finding someone for the night shift if you work it?

And any other tips you want to share would be great!

Great questions! And I am also interested in knowing what other moms do.. I have a 3 1/2 month old and will be returning to work soon. I live with my bf (a cop, who works crazy hours, sometimes days, and sometimes nights) who will keep her most of the time when I will work, but I was also considering hiring someone to keep her if we were both working. Since I live in his hometown, we have a lot of family/friends that would keep her, but I choose not to let them know what I do, and how late I work, so I would prefer to hire someone...

    Thanks for everyones input!!

I'm not a mom, but I am a childcare provider, and generally the wage for private childcare IS $10-15, regardless of what time of night or how old the child is, so her price is decent. However, if she's not dependable you can also probably get someone more reliable who may even have more experience or a relevant degree for the same wage.

I used to work as a nanny and made $22 an hour. I would work days, nights, weekends, and often for 2-14 days while the parents were on vacation.

I would hire through an agency and get a nanny instead of a babysitter. That way it's someone that will keep a regular schedule, and has already had previous families and a background check

What I want to know for other dancing moms of small children:

What do you do for childcare during your dance shifts? Either a sitter or my sister will take my son,.

Which shift do you work and think is better for moms? It is really up to you. If I work a night I still get up with him in the morning regardless of when I go to bed. I'll nap when he does and it works out okay.

If you use a sitter how much do you pay them to sit for night shift? $15 per hour no matter the time of day, which is pretty standard around here. The one gal I use cuts me a break after my son goes to bed though. When I go to work I will usually do a double or even work a few extra hours so I don't have to go in as much.

Does your sitter know what you do ? To an extent, but I like to be a bit private about that. They know how to reach me in an emergency of course.

Do you use more than one sitter in case one flakes? Oh yes. So I bought a one year membership to SitterCity.com.

Was it hard finding someone for the night shift if you work it? Not at all! I was really amazed at the number of women in my area who would work overnights. The SC website has their hours available listed so you can see if they will work at night before you even have to contact them.

    Good luck to you!

I have a unique situation. I am married with five children, ages 10, 8, 4, and 2 year-old twins. My husband keeps them usually, but is away on business a lot, so I have a lady that I use who is also nmy friend but I pay her $10 an hour, and she cleans AND does laundry! I know this situation is not the norm, and I don't look forward to not having her when we move in July. I'll still have the hubby, but he doesn't clean--in fact, he makes just as much a mess as the children!

My husband is home with my daughter overnite but for the times where I need to be to work before he gets home from work I use a nanny from an agency. I pay her 12$ an hour. The upside to the agency is that there are qualified back ups available. Personally I only work into the wee hours (past3 am) if my husband is off the next the next day and I dont have to get up with baby.IMO, its just too much to try to work late nights and have energy to get up and be with baby all day.

I had luck calling local day cares to see if any of their employees babysit on the side. I've also used care.com to interview sitters. Price isn't something that I would skimp on. Even if your child will be sleeping, a situation could arise. We put a certain value on our services and I'd rather have a sitter who does the same. I'd be more concerned if they charged to little.
