Duh Picking out your own pole.

I DID read through the old posts before posting this! I'm wondering though...Electra pole vs my sexy little pole. Which is better, I've seen so many reviews saying it's sturdy, then saying no it's not sturdy and it is driving me insane! I want to start working on pole work at home, so that when I actually get to a club, I'll already know what i'm doing. If you've been on both of these or have one and KNOW it is sturdy enough for inverts and tricks, let me know!
And Yaaaaaaaaay first post for me!
ETA: and of course any tips for starting on pole work are welcome

Don't get an Electra-pole. I bought one a few months ago even though I was advised not to. My roomie helped me set it up, and 5 mins later (all I was trying to do was body waves!) it came right off the ceiling. The only thing I can really use it for is posing.

    I wouldn't risk your safety.

    yeah....
Any pole from Spencers is going to be cheap.

I got mine from a porn shop and it so far works fine.
It was about 112$... and its heavy and nails into the floor and ceiling....

^^^ Exactly! That is why they don't post a lot of information about weight and inverts - they know the products can't handle that stuff!

Look into X Pole, Platinum Stages or Lil Mynx.

Lil mynx was the first one I was looking at, then I found some article talking crap. Blaaaaaah I wish people could be honest about their products, lol.

I've heard good things about the Lil Mynx, and I've got an x-pole that I'm halfway happy with.

It's definitely sturdy, easy to put up and take down, but I went with the stainless steel finish, and it's REALLY slippery. I wish I'd had the option of actually trying out the different finishes before I bought it.

If anyone has any advice on making it less slippery, I'm all ears!

I have a lil mynx. I like it so far (a year plus). I know a lot of people say not to use grip enhancer, but if you rub some on your pole it will make it much less slippery. Just remember that you won't be able to do as much on a pole that hasn't been unslipperied.

I totally bought the Flirtygirlfitness.com pole today. They compare to all the other poles listed here so far...I guess I'll have to report back later how it goes. I'm quite excited actually. LOL

I have Platinum Stages multi-piece pole, it's stationary and has a spinning option. Me likey, but it's slippery as hell.

The poles at work have no finish on them. I can hang on them for days.

When I do perfect a pole trick at home I can always do it with no problems at work because my pole at home is 10x harder.

I wish I would have bought a different finish, stainless steel looks great, but is too slippery.

Lil Mynx and Platinum are probably the two brands that have been around the longest... but I believe Lil Mynx is the older of the two for home poles. I have one that I've owned for years and it's good.

Don't buy anything that says not to do or lacks mentioning: advanced moves like inverts & weight requirements. Any professional level pole will talk about those things.

Don't use alcohol on your pole if you have other options like Windex.

I have an X-Pole, and it is definitely slippery. But like another member mentioned, this just means that you will kick ASS when you get to work and find that your work pole is so much stickier! I like the challenge because it's a fantastic workout!

I've heard good things about platinum stages, x-pole, and li'l m. The rest (like peekaboo) are more for show.

i dont own the electra pole, but i used it at a party. it holds my wieght (115) fine. there were a lot of heavier guys like 180 on it and they were fine as well. I was able to invert and i felt fine. Plus you have the option of bolting it to the ceiling, which we didnt do. im probably going to buy this pole because i was impressed, and hey, its only $110 at Spencers

ugh, u cheap chicks! If ur gonna buy a real pole, ur gonna have to pay $300+. Stop buying these cheap little party favors! Buy a real pole from Lil Mynx, Platinum Stages or XPole. Now you KNOW I am being perfectly honest by mentioning ALL 3 because I personally only rep & endorse XPole.

But STOP buying these crappy poles! We are trying to legitimize the pole biz by not causing injuries to those poling at home. Seriously ladies, if a newbie asks this question or any pole related q, send them to a good retailer and stop encouraging the cheap routes!!!

Bottom line- there are 3 legitimate poles in the market, buy one of those!

^^^ Exactly. I've said it before and I'll say it again - most of these are not meant for advanced moves. Don't expect the company to stand behind them if you hurt yourself. As for Spencer's party poles, if it doesn't live up to expectations (which it won't) you are going to have a tough time returning it. Just save up and get the real thing.

Nakita's point about making pole dancing legitimate when people hear about poles falling down is very true. We need people to understand that this can be safe and fun.

Default Re: Picking out your own pole.

I own a platinum stages multi-piece pole and it never has let me down. I believe X-pole is cheaper (I payed a little over 400 dollars for my pole + height extensions). Spray some hair spray on your thighs and hands for some grip.

And a word of caution: I totally had the same attitude you do about pole tricks. I was really ambitious and wanted to be able to put on a good show before auditioning because that's what I thought was necessary. Pole dancing is not something that is easy to master, and its even harder to master in your own home without any help. You don't need to be a pole cat to be a stripper. I suggest you audition first because:
    a) You learn so much about how to put on a show at work - more so than you do at home. You get to watch other girls, plus you get to have real experience. Yeah, it sucks to be the new girl who can't do cool tricks, but the experience is much better - and you will quickly find out you don't need to be a well-seasoned pole champion to work at the club

    b) You will become more toned and muscular by practicing at work. Pole dancing is a hardcore workout. Its very easy to only practice for an hour a day at home. If you just start working now, you will improve much quicker due to the fact that you are moving around and dancing for an entire shift

    c) If you start working now you will be more confident about practicing with your pole. Pole dancing is a very frustrating hobby. When you begin, you bruise and injure yourself, its really hard and awkward, and you can't do any super cool tricks like you really want to. It takes a lot of patience. I would get so frustrated when I was just practicing at home - sometimes I would try and try to do a trick and just end up crying because I felt like I would never get it. After I started working however, the fact that I was already in the club and making money made me more confident when I practiced - I realized I didn't need to beat myself up, I could have fun with it and take it easy.

wow- this is a really long rant. I didn't mean to babbling on and on, but I thought I'd share my experience with you since I took the same route you are planning to take. Long story short - consider auditioning first.

There was a post on here about making your own pole for under 100 dollars, it bolted into the ceiling and was weighed down to the floor...What ever happened to using street signs or playgrounds that what I did. One of the more experienced ladies meet me at a playground and taught me on the monkey bars lol

I own a chrome finish removable XPole. Its awesome, very sturdy, easily removable and putup-able if you have someone to help you (lol) However now that I know more about poles, I wish I had gotten brass instead of chrome. I know learning on the slippery pole makes you better but it doesnt help if you cant stick to it worth anything to begin with. Only under very particular conditions can I even climb it and I feel if I had brass id learn more and get better/stronger faster.
Dont EVER use a carmen electra or peekaboo pole as it is VERY unsafe and dangerous as many other girls have pointed out. Also get the 50mm or 45mm as those are the most commonly used. I got 50mm

^^^^If you don't want to build one. platinum stages has a removable spinning/ static pole on there site for 289 plus shipping or there are x poles on eBay for 299 free shipping I believe they sell for less on the original site but they have to be shipped from UK the eBay ones come from the hussy hut in LA. Also on eBay is a guy named Dave who custom build poles to fit in your house they are semi permanent taking about 5 minutes to install for 125 he will make it a spinning pole for 175 shipping is free in the us $40 to Canada.

Dave has a 95% good approval rate on over 100 orders the only major complaint i seen was it was slippery and thinner then club poles I believe its 1.75 in. diameter you may want to check that out

if u dont wanna buy pole grip pump bottle hair spray works just make sure to clean the pole afterwards or else it builds up. but never use it in the club cause other girls tend to get a bit catty about the pole being too sticky

My personal fave is Dry Hands. There's a lot of products on the market though and lots of household stuff like the hair spray or shaving cream.
