    Default Upper body strength?

I have zero upper body strength (could never do a cartwheel and I can average maybe 10 pushups LOL) and it looks like pole work requires a lot of upper body strength. How does everyone manage? All of my strength is in my lower half and thats why I'm looking at stripping (at home) as a good workout to help with this issue.

any tips and pointers are appreciated

Well, you have to start somewhere, right? Everyone has weaknesses.

Just start off doing what you can, pushing your abilities...and you will eventually develop strength (unless you're a 90 yr old grandma who exists on a no-protein diet). It's the same with any kind of 'sport'.

Most beginning strippers can't even hop on the pole and spin around without sliding off while holding on for dear life. Watch videos on youtube and begin with the simple tricks. Or just lift your body up while spinning for as long as you can. Such 'tricks' might feel silly, but you have to start at the bottom and work your way up.

You need to work on your arm muscles and core primarily. Pick up a copy of "Strength Training Anatomy" by Frederic Delavier. There's one for men and one for women. Either copy will be helpful too you. Don't be afraid to get the men's version though... too many women are scared of bulking up and that doesn't really happen unless you over do things and change what you eat.

The book will teach you about all your muscles and how to work them out. Concentrate on the core, arms and back when you are lifting weights to prepare for the pole.

You can also do pull ups on the pole. Face the pole, grip it above your head, pull up & in, and then hang on for as long as you can. As you advance try lifting your feet off the ground.

Practice doing exercises like the plank, which quickly strengthens the core muscles as well.

I usually suggest that if students aren't ready for pull work right away try classes in aerial fabric, which can really help prepare you for the pole.

Thank you so much Charlie61 and kylea2!

Right now Im hitting up the eliptical or treadmill for 45-60 minutes 5 days a week and 2 times a week I go to a strength training class at my gym. I just started doing this a few weeks ago and I can see some improvement. I know its going to take time, but I'll get there.

you def build the strength as you go, which doesnt mean i dont go to the gym but originally i never used weights and i managed on the pole just fine. so keep it up and you will get stronger faster.
