Default Another officer drunk with power

I don't if anyone saw this and I doubt it would have made the news had the victim not been a "celebrity", but this is just misuse of power and I am glad that for once people are taking notice. I understand it is difficult to uphold the law and listen to the public as well, BUT as you will read another officer confirmed that the mother-in-law was indeed dying and the guy needed to be let go to run into the hospital room. She dies while this officer held up the family outside the hospital over the offense of rolling through a stop light.
The officer did eventually publicly apologize(((( http://www.seattlepi.com/national/11...tml?source=rss )))), but was he made to do that or does he even care?
I have plenty of friends in the force, but this guy just made me cringe.

A police officer was placed on administrative leave Thursday over a traffic stop involving an NFL player whom he kept in a hospital parking lot and threatened to arrest while his mother-in-law died inside the building.
Officer Robert Powell also drew his gun during the March 18 incident involving Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats in the Dallas suburb of Plano, police said.
“I can screw you over,” he said at one point in the videotaped incident. When another officer came with word that Moats’ mother-in-law was indeed dying, Powell’s response was: “All right. I’m almost done.”
Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle apologized to the family and announced that Powell would be on paid leave pending an internal investigation.
“When we at the command staff reviewed the tape, we were embarrassed, disappointed,” Kunkle said. “It’s hard to find the right word and still be professional in my role as the police chief. But the behavior was not appropriate.”
Powell, 25, a three-year member of the force, stopped Moats’ SUV outside Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano after Moats rolled through a red light.
Police officials said Powell told his commanders he believed he was doing his job, and that he drew his gun but did not point it. Kunkle said Powell was not necessarily acting improperly when he pulled his weapon out, but that once he realized what was happening should have put the gun back, apologized and offered to help the family in any way.
“His behavior, in my opinion, did not exhibit the common sense, the discretion, the compassion that we expect our officers to exhibit,” Kunkle said.
Moats’ wife, who was in the car along with other relatives, said Powell pointed his weapon at her.
“He was pointing a gun at me as soon as I got out of the car,” Tamishia Moats told The Dallas Morning News.
The Moats family did not immediately return messages left by The Associated Press. Powell did not respond to requests for comment through the Dallas police union.
Video from a dashboard camera inside the officer’s vehicle, obtained by Dallas-Fort Worth station WFAA-TV, revealed an intense exchange in which the officer threatened to jail Moats.
He ordered Tamishia Moats, 27, to get back in the SUV, but after pausing for a few seconds, she and another woman rushed into the hospital. She was by the side of her mother, 45-year-old Jonetta Collinsworth, when she died a short time later from breast cancer.
“Get in there,” said Powell, yelling at Tamishia Moats as she exited the vehicle. “Let me see your hands!”

shit. that is awful. what an absolute and total asshole.

most of the police officers i've been pulled over by have been fairly nice, but there's always a couple who just have the biggest chip on their shoulder against the world and you'd better respect them. fucking idiots.
-love everyone but keep them far from your soul-

Oh, my mom was just telling me about this...! It's crazy. The cops here are either on power trips or crooked...I also come from the same area as the crooked judges who were getting kickbacks for sending kids away...

I saw the video on yahoo the day after it happened. It's disgusting! A nurse came outside and told the officer his family member was dieing and he needed to go now and he just talked over her like she wasnt even there. The police chief was pissed he said there was no way to describe how he felt about that officer professionaly and said after they showed the officer the video he didn't see where he did anything wrong.

I think what adds to my fury is that I heard he is on paid leave.. I really hope that is not true, it's not like this is a he said she said situation.
Would he act the same way with a pregnant woman? Me thinks he might.
I respect the job of an officer, but this guy needs to be retaught what it means to "protect and serve" and shit, be human at least.

You gotta give MAYOR props to the guy who was stopped for a) keeping his cool throughout the whole ordeal and b) not once playing the "do you know who i am?" card for being an NFL player. Theres just no way i would have been able to get through that without an assault on a police officer charge.

Yes. Probably we all saw it by now. Even his apology. Doesn't matter what he said or could say; that is just completely unforgiveable.

Unfortunately it implies the very common 'drunk with power' scenario, altogether too common in our "country's finest." What BS that is!!

Yeah, the driving was aggressive, but so is it for an ambulance, police, firetrucks, etc. Ever see them get held up from their duty for a traffic ticket?
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

He'll go to a suburb, as he badly wants to be a 'policeman.'

    Fucking Idiot!!!!

to me this illustrates a major difference between competent police officers and dumbfucks in cop uniforms. being a good cop involves being street smart, reading people and assessing situations rather than mechanically following following procedure and being completely oblivious to what is actually going on!

i dont know how that guy remained calm! (i guess having a gun waved around in your face helps)

Texas seems to have more than it's share of dumb "cracker" cops. Look what happened to Bobby Tolan, his wife and son ? And the D.A. still hasn't indicted the idiots who shot Tolan's son and wrecked his possible career as a baseball player.
