    Default Foundation, acne, and MAC

    Hello all!

I am struggling with pretty bad acne/scars, and I bought some MAC liquid foundation that works REALLY well in covering it... I love it!

I have been using it a lot for a couple of weeks and I've noticed my skin is worse. Could it be the makeup? I am also at "that time" in my cycle though, so that could be the cause

I never did ask the sales person if MAC foundation is non-comedogenic. Do any of you know?

Am I going to wreck my skin if I use MAC daily? Do I need to go with a gentler brand, and if so, can you recommend one with REALLY GOOD coverage?

    Thanks so much!

Bare Minerals. I hate MAC makeup. It's so heavy, the counter ladies always make me look like a drag queen and I think it's overpriced.

Evene though it's light, their foundation is bad ass. I call it my Instant Hot.

MAC is comedogenic. I've had acne (not serious) for as long as I can remember... As soon as I switched to mineral makeup (I HATE bare minerals, love everyday minerals ) and started using natural products my skin became completely clear.

I LOVE MAC and will continue to use their eye and lip products. But the concealers and foundations just aren't worth looking like shit without them!

I would be willing to try everyday minerals, but bare minerals does not give me enough coverage; my acne scars show through

    Where is Everyday Minerals sold?

    Thanks all!

I break out when I use MAC foundations or powders. I find a lot of things that are non-comedogenic make me break out though.

I really like the Almay foundation, but lately I don't use foundation..

I used that Sheer Minerals, or sometihng like that, (the infomercial with Leeza Gibbons) and I thought it did a pretty good job of covering the scars, but not that great.. It made me look older, and my skin looked kinda dull. But I didn't break out when I used it.

The best thing I've used is a Cle de Peau Translucent Correcter.. it's in a tube like a lipstick, and you just rub it into places where you have large pores or scars, then put powder or concealer on top. It really helps, but it's expensive.. I think I paid $70 for it. It's kind of a waxy substance. But it actually makes it look like I have nice skin. I am not really crazy abuot their concealer, it has a great consistency, but it looks really yellowish on my skin..

I've used that Smashbox primer for acne-prone skin, but it makes my skin look chapped or something.. a lot of people love this though..

Girl, I know all about Mac and their makeup. I have very sensitive skin and just a few days ago, found out that I have ezcema. Not like a lot of people have it and not the kind that makes your skin super dry. It just comes on my hands and elbows. It flares up if I'm stressed or if I use the wrong things on my skin. But I used mac products on my face and I used to break out in a matter of seconds of putting it on. I stopped using anything they had but their lipstick. Now I've been using Sue Devitt powder and oh my God, it's so beautiful on my skin and has made my skin look even better. It's natural and has sea weed in it, I just love it. I would say go towards the powder that's oil free and never use liquid because it will over the years take a huge toll on your skin.

When I first started using MAC (studio fix, very heavy) it made my face breakout. I still use it everytime I work, but I've learned how to properly clean my face afterwards.

Do a search on OCM (oil cleansing method) that will deep cleanse your pores to get all the 'hidden' makeup gunk that's still sitting in your pores that regular cleanser just wont' pick up.

Now, if even that doesn't help, maybe you are allergic and I too suggest you try some mineral foundation. I've never used it before, so I have no recommendations.

i've used bare minerals and bare naturals (i think its called) and just recently started using the loreal mineral makeup. i think it works just as well. i mix it with baby oil and it makes a eally nice concealer, although i dont think that would work if you're breaking out...

i've struggled with acne for years, never had a severe case but it was infuriatingly persistant. even now that my skin is under control i still would not touch MAC foundation with a ten foot pole... i'm super paranoid about what i put on my face. More normal people swear by revlon colorstay foundation and powder to cover up acne and scarring, the coverage/staying power is awesome and they say it does not particularly aggravate acne.

personally i'm a bit scared of colorstay and would rather get lighter coverage than break out more.

i use cleanance avene non-comedogenic concealer pencil (which has a green end and a tan end, the green is awesome to cover up redness) then i use mineral powder and blush. My skin does not look airbrushed or perfect but it looks ok to me.

baby oil and mineral oil in general are big no-no's if you are acne prone.

sigh... i'm jealous of those people who can put whatever they want on their face and still have great skin!

I used to work for MAC and it makes tons of girls break out...my skin is like a battle warrior so I've never had a problem but for the price and product, I'd definitely recommend looking into something else. I'm not sure what kind of coverage you want but you could definitely go with Bare Minerals and then just use a concealer to get the trouble spots. I used to work at Sephora and Benefit makes a great concealer called Bo-ing! and I used it on almost every client and almost all of them came back to buy it.

Not sure on the makeup, but make sure you drink lots of water - helps keep my skin clear. I also love Purity, by Benefit - such a great cleanser!

Also, to anyone who haven't bought filters for their water system. You should really do that as soon as possible. As we all know the water out of the sink is better than the water in the bottle. The only problem about the fountain water is that it has chlorine and other bad things in it. If you buy the brita or pur systems, you won't go wrong. Whatever harmful is in the water, the filter will catch it and give you great tasting water. It's wise to use these in your restrooms and also on the showers because the water can take a toll on your skin when it's hard, or has all these harsh chemicals in them. I have my house loaded with them, I also have the filtered pitcher where I keep water in the fridge. Let me tell you, you definitely can tell the difference. I taste the water before and it was horrible, you could taste chlorine and everything else in there. Once I started using the filters, you can taste any of that. It just tastes clean, even better than the bottled water, which you lose thousands of dollars on the bottle water. So do yourselves a favor and get your water softened and filtered, the best investment you can make.

Thank you so much for all the pointers ladies!!

I have been doing the OCM occasionally and it makes my skin feel sooo lovely. I also bought Revlon ColorStay and my skin has been looking a little better. For moisture I have been using Aloe gel and it calms down the redness while being a non-greasy moisture source.

    Thanks again!

I start accutane in 2 weeks, so hopefully in a couple months this will all be a non-issue!

Did you say in another thread that you are starting accutane? I highly recommend accutane if you have persitently bad skin ( like I did ) . I've been through hell with my skin and I highly recommend accutane. After going on 1.5 years ago , my face ( I didn't have it all over, only face ) looks so much better. I rarely breakout now. It cost 2k for the whole thing ( dr. visit, bloodwork, the accutance ) and it was 100% worth it to me.

For the makeup .... I used covergirl oil free stuff . You can't put anything with old on bad skin.

Bare minerals / other minerals makeup won't cover well enough.

Heal your skin asap and you'll feel a tons better. Get to a GOOD derm ( I had to fire my first one and it's due to his shitty skills that I have mild scarring on my left cheek ) . A good doctor will help you!

I love MAC's eye makup and lip make-up, but I don't use their concealers and foundation-too heavy and oily.

I use AVEDA's powder foundations. I LOVE THEM! SOOOOOO glad I found them!

Be aware and in touch with your Doc re the Accutane...it's a VERY powerful drug and can have side effects although it's truly amazing at fixing acne.
I have battled by skin for years and find now that a simple steam with herbal in hot water (towel over head an steam skin to relax and open pores...) followed by an aspirin mask keeps it amazingly clear and even helps the old marks look less red.
I use the "Capture Totale" foundation by Dior: pricey and VERY much worth it,it covers beautifully, lasts all day,and seems to really smooth out my skin.

I find MAC makeup to be very heavy, but I love using it for work because it really does cover everything! I apply moisturizer right before putting it on, and take it off as soon as I can afterwards. I have pretty average skin (I break out sometimes, but no bad acne) and I haven't noticed it making me break out much more.

Stay far away from MAC... I had the worst breakout of my life when I used it and it left a couple scars

I loveeee bare minerals and use everyday minerals sometimes. If you are acne prone stay away from any liquid or creme foundation... it will make a huge difference in your skin.

I used a whole container of MAC Mineralize foundation and Stuio Fix and my skin hasn't changed or broke out. I put it on 3-4 times a week only for 5-7 hours at a time and take it off immediately after work using Clarisonic () I'm pretty sure thats the trick: TAKE OFF YOUR MAKE UP after work/going out. Do not ever go to sleep with it. Plus, I never wear make up during the day, only for going out clubbing and work.

I also religiously use products for acne-prone skin from . Masks, cleansers, moisturizers. It keeps my skin looking healthy and prevents breakouts.
