    Default Computer Hacker/ Stripper

I think i have finally decided what i'm going to do in life. I think i would like to be a hacker (white hat of course).

I think that's one of the few job skills that employers could care less if i am a stripper or not.

Any girls (or guys) hackers in here?

*dies laughing* Oh my god. I never thought I would see someone put those two words in a sentence except me!

I've been in the Network Security industry for nearly 5 years. I'm A+, Net+, Security+, SANS 503, MCNA and MCSE certified, headed for another SANS and my CISSP (hopefully adding an ISSEP at the end of that soon!) I'm, I guess, what you'd call a "white hat" hacker, though I'm not fond of the names. I participate in several conventions nation-wide, my two favorites being Black Hat and DEFCON.

It's not the easiest industry to break into. Luckily, you're right. It's one of the few where the people just ... don't give a shit. And the guys you work with will (the majority of the time) ABSOLUTELY LOVE that you are/were a stripper, if you decide to share the info. Geeky girls are the sexiest thing alive.

I work as the IT Manager for a holdings corporation here in town for my "day job", and my primary job is exactly what a calssic White Hat or Tiger Team would do - our other IT people set up the networks, encryption, etc; and then sic me on them to see just how easy/hard it would be to get through them. Some of the tests are blind - I'll sit at a computer and just go for it, not having any idea of what I'm up against, only what I"m looking for. Sometimes, I know exactly what's been set up, what encryption is being used ... I'll know the entire back-end system and still look for ways in to get financial information, SS numbers, whatever.

The big thing in this industry is experience. I'm still in school, and what really mattered was my "real world" experience (participating in events through DEFCON, for instance) and my certifications to back up my technical knowledge. Be prepared to work your way up through the bottom, especially if you want your co-workers to respect you. I started as a lowly A+ certified computer tech, working for minimum wage and getting walked all over.

HOWEVER, my perk? I still strip (obviously), and have been known to go on calls to our sister businesses in full make-up and hair. The people LOVE it. Our CEO adores me, and has actually come to see me at the club. I have to really work to get the respect of female co-workers; since many of them take Tyra's outlook and think I'm degrading myself. But then I just grin when I see them eyeing that new pair of shoes online and I know that my 4 hours of working last night would buy me those shoes three times over.

And the rush of satisfaction when they have to stoop to asking the "IT Stripper" for help is just awesome.

Best of luck to you, and let me know if there's anything I can do to help. I'd be happy to point you in the right direction!

I think you just gave me new hope/ inspiration. I plan on studying to get as many certifications as possible and i'm also changing my major to computer science.

How long did it take you to get A+ certified? What job did you start off with?

I did systems administrations for years. My interest in computers pretty much came out of that. If you can find a good company that really cares a lot about their computers then you could make a good living checking to make sure their systems are safe. The problem is that a lot of companies don't realize just how accessible their information really is.

My A+ Cert didn't take me long at all. I had it completed, both parts (A+ comes in hardware and software, in 2 separate tests.) in about 3 months. I could have done it in shorter, but I was doing Net+ at the same time. Depending on how well you learn, and your prior knowledge of computers, you could get it in as little as a month.

I started with that cert working in a computer repair shop while I got my other certs. I didn't make GREAT money, but you can expect between $9 and $12/per hour.

And, for what it's worth, I'm double majoring in Computer Engineering and Robotics ... with a minor in dance. You don't NEED a degree that high - I just like the classes better. lol Majoring in Computer Sciences or Information Technology should serve you well for what you want to do.

Best of luck to you chica! And feel TOTALLY free to PM me with any questions you have or shoot me an IM, all my contact info is in my profile.

Power to the IT Strippers of the world!

Keep in mind that a lot of companies do background checks. That isn't to say that your dancing history would or wouldn't hurt you, but they would be aware of it, and some might mind. You never know. Just sayin'. I still think it's an excellent choice, and you could certainly become an SEO guru and be an independent contractor. Companies go nuts for that.

also, nobody else will tell you this, but being black and a female pretty much cancels out any benefits you think you might get from working in IT with a stripper past that you mention. they will seize on any excuse to prove that you're stupid, because 'black folks aren't into tech, except pagers'. not mentioning it will help, as will people thinking you are caribbean or african (sad to say, numerous IT folks believe the only black people who 'get' tech are immigrants from the caribbean and african nations. contradictory and very real in terms of getting hired.)

you have to be assertive, you have to know more than guys getting paid more while knowing less, and you have to be able to actually apply the knowledge, for whatever kind of IT you are going for.

there is also a lot of regional variance regarding ladies in IT. in some parts of the country, dressing in full makeup and hair would get the contract cancelled.

certainly it's not impossible, but it is harder and you don't have the same kind of leeway a 'cute' white or asian chick has in the industry in terms of how you present yourself. IT is still very white and very male and they just have a lot of stupid stereotyped preconceptions, plus since they are beta males in the real world, they get threatened easily by anyone with obviously more knowledge than they have.

i could be more specific about specific areas of the IT industry, like where this type of stuff is least bad or where it is most monetarily rewarding, but i don't really know whether you even want to focus on hardware v. software, for example.

When you get away from the women's stats which take all fields and averages them, and get into industry standard stats, the more pay for the men does not pan out.

Yes, it is true, blacks are not well represented in the tech area. I was reading reports on this going back to the mid-90's. But, it is not our fault, if they choose not to enter in that field, well.....

lol at your beta male sentences, who's stereotyping now.

If i can't get a job with just my experience and skills alone, then its not a job for me. I don't want to work some place where i have to bend over backwards to prove that i belong there because of my skin color and sex. I'm pretty much determined to be the best damn IT stripper i can be. And i know it is no where near impossible, because my mother is an IT specialist making 6 figures at a company... and she is about as black and female as they come. Even if i'm not greatly successful, I'm sure that my certifications and degrees will at least guarantee me work when i stop dancing.

And if i listened to "I'm not gonna make it because i'm black and a woman"... I wouldn't make it at a million jobs. Doctor, Lawyer, Model..... basically every job. Black woman are the smallest percentage. It's harder for us everywhere. I'm not going to even take that to heart.

^^^Agreed. I went to a great school, got a bunch of certifications, developed an impressive resume. I landed interviews and when I showed up it was like..uh....um...this is you....we can't pay you that much. This happened more than once.

But I did do very well as a freelancer.

I'm glad you're deciding not to take this to heart, Ms. Mia. I was mildly horrified when I read that statement about being black and female causing so many problems.

All you have to do is put your foot down. Show them that you WON'T bend over backwards to just satisfy their little whims about you being dark-skinned or female. I may be a little white girl, but I get just as much shit because I'm "cute". I get looked at like a novelty.

I'm terribly sorry about the experiences miabella and Tonya had - it's very upsetting. But I truthfully believe that their experiences are an exception, not a rule. I had several black and female co-workers in the various companies I worked in, all of whom were VERY well respected; gender and color be damned.

sigh, acknowledging that something is harder to come by is hardly throwing one's hands in the air and crying about omgz racisms.

it is just harder, and there is variance as to how much harder depending on where in IT one is.

it is harder to get hired at clubs being a dark skinned girl, but that doesn't mean an individual afrotypic-looking dancer cannot do very well once she gets into a club. is it omgz 'giving up' to point that out to any dark-skinned, afrotypic looking dancers desiring to work in clubs 'hey, you may get turned down more and have to hustle harder once you do get in somewhere?'

i haven't said anywhere that it is impossible-- in fact i clearly stated that IT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO EARN A LIVING BEING BLACK AND FEMALE IN IT, just HARDER. that is true in the general sense.

and again, depending on where you go and what you are after in terms of work in IT, 'harder' may be a tiny, incidental thing-- or it may be a giant boulder. like i said, it varies wildly from area to area within in the industry and a fair amount regionally. seattle is easier than the bay area, for example. and north carolina is easier than north texas, for another example.

and i will apologise a little for the beta-male remark-- there are some alpha-type males in IT (often but not exclusively your conventionally attractive ones, which is kinda interesting), and those are most likely to hire on actual merit/skill and defend you if someone tries to claim you're a quota hire.

IT is misleading as a term, being just so generic these days-- it does sometimes cover things that don't require a technical background or knowledge at all.

so far, the OP hasn't even been able to indicate an interest in a specific area of IT, which is more concerning than hiring difficulties that might arise once one chooses a field.

i like databases, personally-- full of women (the management side specially), but still well compensated (ridiculously so in some cases) and you don't necessarily need to be a coder-type. testing is also good, particularly if you stay away from video games (only because they pay less on purpose to all testers at entry levels, since they rightly discovered a lot of male testers will work for less if it's video games).

oh, and if you want to really test your sales chops, sell software (1 million per licence software, that is)-- jobs in that line of sales are very hard to come by nowadays for obvious economic reasons, but the salaries haven't dropped, and many of those salaries are vast.

i have never thought it honest or kind to say that because i don't personally experience some types of discrimination in hiring that they must not exist, or that someone noting them is 'giving up' or 'whining'. heck, i wouldn't tell a guy wanting to strip that he could make the same as a female stripper dancing only for women-- it is certainly possible, but it would be pretty freaking hard.

^^ I understand your input. But i would rather not think about how my color might effect how successful I am. I will cross that bridge IF i get to it. For now, i'm gonna proceed with my goals as if my color doesn't matter.

As for what i would like to do specifically in the IT field. I'm still young (very young) and learning. I've only taken less than a handful of computer classes. Only one basic programming class. But so far, i feel that i would like to work on building and breaking internet security systems. I don't think i would really like to do much with creating software. I've actually contemplated going into the video game field as well, but at this point, i'm not sure...its still very much up in the air. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I just have finally figured out what i think i would enjoy doing for the rest of my life. I know i'm a nerd and i've always found comfort in computers. So, i have finally decided on my major and general career choice. AND I'M EXCITED!

I would like to hear from any women in this forum doing any jobs with computer programming.

If you're really interesting in White Hat, your best bet is going to be networking classes. Start with your A+ cert, since being a techie is one of the best ways to breaking into the industry, and then move on to Net+ and Security+; both of which are focused around the functionality of networking, and the security of said network. By the time you're done with those, you'll know better EXACTLY what part of Security you want to be involved in - Intrusion Analysis (watching to see who's trying to get in, how they're doing it, and then informing the higher-ups of what's going on), Security Admin (your job to make sure people CAN'T get in), or a member of a legit Tiger Team (the people who are the honest-to-god White Hats, the ones that break into the networks and tell you the back doors they found) - and you'll likely have met contacts and people who can point you in the right direction.

I'd also recommend DEFCON (www.defcon.org) *HIGHLY* as a great place to see ALL the different facets of the internet security field - and to meet people from all over the place who work as everything from techies to the lead security personell over at Google to working in jobs that have NOTHING to do with computers are are just here because it's a hobby. Guys and girls come from all over the place to meet up and hang out - and go to panels, learn new things ... it's a TON of fun.

As far as gaming goes, I know nothing about it. lol My ex was really into it, and he started with Graphic Design classes in HS and moved to DeVry University in their game programming program thing. If you decide security is your thing, I'm happy to help in ANY way I can!

That sounds like a solid plan to me. That sounds like the way i'm going to go. This summer i'll focus on my A+ certification

Ok not to be an asskisser or anything but you are just freaking awesome. There should be a tv show about something like this.

Hackers used to be code writers. Crackers were what we today describe as hackers. I'm unaware of any further change in names recently.

It just reminds me of that movie hackers where computers are like, the alternative cool kid thing and everybody dressed like more fashionable Tron.
