"How bad is it to be a dancer?"

Well, that all depends on the person. Can you keep your head on straight? Are you pretty strong minded? Do other people's opinions get to you easily? Dancing isn't for the weak of heart!

You can still get hired at your weight and height, but I would suggest going and checking out the clubs first so you know which clubs will hire you. Some clubs like their dancers coked out thin, others like normal weights, and some like slightly thicker - others like a variety. So it's a matter of finding the ones where you will fit.

Honestly though, I don't recommend this type of business to new dancer's during a recession. It's really hard to compete where there is very little money to begin with and it get's swept up off the floor so fast by the Super Strippers and hustlers. You may want to see about rotating days as a cocktail girl and dancer to see where you personally make more money. Another option for you is artistic nude modeling, which can certainly help with bills if you are open to it!

By the way, it sounds like you are still living with your mother. Have you told her you are considering dancing? I would STRONGLY encourage you to talk to her before doing this. A parent who is opposed to it can make things much worse if it's hidden from them and they feel like they've been lied to.

Since you are going to college I would also suggest that if you are going to take out loans take out a bit extra for housing expenses, transportation, etc if your loan interest rate isn't too high. That extra money can help you ride out the recession. You don't want to start dancing and going to school and feel like you need to make so much money dancing that you can't concentrate on your studies.
    Don't you ever sleep?
Not at night...that's when the stars have rather better things to do. They're coming out, shining, that sort of thing.

Another thing to add on to the first response which I had to actually find out on my own. I hope you're fine with full nudity clubs since under you're 21 you can't work with alcohol.

I actually see no big difference.

If you are asking "how bad is it to be a dancer" this might be the wrong profession for you. In my experience, dancing requires a positive attitude etc. I cant tell from the context whether you are asking how bad it is in respect to your dignity, safety, energy required or what not, but (especially if you personally find it degrading) if you already feel like it is a bad profession before even dealing with some of the bullshit, it might be hard for you. You also said you are confident that you can make money, which is more of the attitude that will benifit you! I personally am happy with being a dancer now, but I switched to a club with good management and respectful (relatively speaking) customers. When i worked at a hole in the wall with extremely rude customers, there were some days where I would come home extremely unhappy, even if i had made good money. If you find the right spot, being a dancer is not bad at all.

As for your weight, what Kylea said is pretty spot on. Ive seen strippers of all sizes, and if you are in a club where being a little bit thick is not a problem, then you can still make money (assuming you have good sale tactics). When you start dancing you will tone up pretty quickly.

Dancing during the recession can be rough... the money is not stable since there is no wage. Some nights you might bank but other nights you might owe the club money... it depends on where you live and how you hustle. Have you ever been to a strip club? I would go so you can see dancing in action... and see whether it seems right for you. Also, read through the hustle hut and stripping general sections here, there is a lot of useful advice that should give you a feel for what the profession requires. The suggestion about being a cocktail waitress is also not a bad one, since waitresses have a wage so are guaranteed to walk out with some money.

In regards to the needing to be nude comment, I think that varies state to state. Ive worked in ohio and new orleans at topless clubs with alcohol; i only needed to be over 18 not 21. In some states maybe the law says otherwise. I would look up the laws in your area.

thank you so much girls! i didnt mean that as BAD i meant like how hard the work is and if its fun. sorry i should have worded that different. :[ . but yes i have a positive attitude i just hope i could make a lot of money. im sure i could i am really confident and know that i could most likely get regular customers. I just dont kno much about stripping or anything. and i told my mom, she is not wanting me to but she says if i would like it for a job and be happy, and got paid good she would be fine with it. And i have a really good head on my shoulders. if i havent tried drugs or anything bad by this point im definately not going to! i kno that it can be rough but other jobs are a lot rougher, and at least this way it wouldnt be something i hated doing. thanks for all your advice, im still a little lost on wat to look up and find out, but il try calling some clubs and seeing wat their policies are.

It's HARD WORK ! I'm not saying that to be discouraging, but in order to make a decent amount , you do have to work hard. I kind of thought that dancing would be easier than my other job for the money amounts ....... and it turned out not to be. My parameters are different though because I'm done with college and already started in a day job. It's really just a different type of work. It can be decent money, but it isn't easy work. If you do some searches on this site for your area , you can sometimes find threads that talk about specific money amounts ( I was greatly concerned about averages possible nightly when I was researching dancing ).

I honestly wouldn't recommend dancing to anyone under 25 ........ I considered it at 21 and am GLAD I didn't. I literally think I would have been caught in a negative cycle if I started earlier. It IS a recession and dancers across the board do not make as much now as a whole as they did a couple years ago. From what I understand .... dancers across the board made even better money 5-10 years ago. The days of getting paid well simply for being willing to be topless are close to being over ( it seems like to me anyway ). You have to know how to sell dances, be persistent enough, and actually work enough hours ( similar to hours at a regular job ) to make decent money.

On one hand ...... I'm hesitant to even recommend it at all because you are young ..... on the other .... if you are SURE you wouldn't caught up in the negatives of dancing .... it could be a decent gig for you.

Well thats good that you did it when you were ready :]
and is it just that its a hard work out? bcuz i am very well at dealing with people, angry rude or anything else, and i kno i could definately get hired. But I am POSITIVE 100% i would not get caught up in the negatives, im very positive in myself for that, and even though i am young i do act older, and i think it would be a great way to make money and have fun. and even tho it is a recession right now, it kind of makes people want to go to strip clubs and drink alcohol more because they are depressed and are trying to find jobs, so they just want to have fun. on the other hand they do not have as much money if they dont have a job. so it kind of goes both ways?
but even if i only made like 100 to 200 a night, i still would only make 200 working a regular job in like 2 weeks.. so either way it is still a plus :]

If you were over 21 and working in the same city I was ( San Francisco ) , I could pretty much guarantee that you'd make $100-$200 a night ( the problems is that it's super expensive there... those averages aren't really what could be considered "good" money). I'm just not sure if you can work in a club if you are not 21. Are you hoping for $100-$200 from just stage tips ? I've worked as a coctail waitress at a club in Utah and dancers seemed to always make at least that much nightly there if that helps you at all.

$200 nightly averages are very possible in SF. I'm not sure about where you are, but I did wander into Embers once for the hell of it ( I'm rarely in Sac. and just happened to be when I started thinking of dancing ).
